"Frederich? Where did you hear that?"
Whisper quirked a small smile, "I s'pose I've got a helpful secret talent."
"That don't sound good... but I don't know any 'Frederich.' We might have ta ask around or somethin'."
She nodded. If they had to ask around to figure out what that meant, then that was exactly what she would be willing to do. She hoped that Jockey would be willing to do it with her, although she was willing to do it on her own if it meant helping out her borough and finding Rip.
"Let's do it then." Whisper nodded. The last thing that she wanted to do was back down now.

"I s'pose I've got a helpful secret talent."
Jockey quirked a small grin. "I'll say. It's quite handy."
"Let's do it then."
He pursed his lips slightly. "You sure? I mean... we don't exactly know what we're getting into. But if you're sure, I'm in."
He was curious to know who this 'Frederich' person was and how it had to do with Rip.

"I'll say. It's quite handy."
Whisper grinned mischievously, "Sometimes yes, sometimes no."
"You sure? I mean... we don't exactly know what we're getting into. But if you're sure, I'm in."
She raised an eyebrow. "You sound less sure than I am. I want to do what's best for my borough. It's all that I'm sure I have. I'm not going to let anything bad happen here," Whisper insisted. She was fully prepared to handle things violently if that was what it came to, and she was quick, both with her legs and her mouth. She needed to find Rip, and that meant that she would. "Let's do it."

"Sometimes yes, sometimes no."
Jockey looked at her curiously. "Sometimes no? Why's that? I'd think it would be a good thing."
"You sound less sure than I am."
He shrugged. "Just a little confused I guess."
"I want to do what's best for my borough. It's all that I'm sure I have. I'm not going to let anything bad happen here."
He sighed a bit and nodded. "Yeah... same here. I want to know what's up and keep the place safe. Just a bit nervous I guess. I hope it ain't more trouble than it's worth."
"Let's do it."
Jockey nodded again but more firmly. "For Queens an' Rip."
They would find him somehow or another.

"Sometimes no? Why's that? I'd think it would be a good thing."
Whisper bit her lip, "Sometimes ya hear somethin' that ya don't wanna know..." Being the outsider that she was, Whisper had figured this out the hard way plenty of times before. She had just learned that she couldn't afford to care.
"Just a little confused I guess."
She nodded, shrugging. "If ya say so."
"Yeah... same here. I want to know what's up and keep the place safe. Just a bit nervous I guess. I hope it ain't more trouble than it's worth."
"Do ya think Rip isn't worth this much trouble?" Came the quick reply, a raised eyebrow shooting up in response to Jockey's words. It wasn't that they were unfounded, it was that she was beginning to get desperate.
"For Queens an' Rip."
Flashing a small smile, Whisper nodded in agreement. She nodded her head back out of that part of town, figuring that they should ask some of the newsies if they had heard of the name before they got into trying to look through public records and things like that. She figured that they could ask the gang, as well, if things came down to that.

"Sometimes ya hear somethin' that ya don't wanna know..."
Jockey's smile disappeared. "Ah... right. I guess there are downsides to everything," he said quietly.
"If ya say so."
He cocked his head. "You don't think it's a little confusin'?"
"Do ya think Rip isn't worth this much trouble?"
He shook his head. "No, no, no! I didn't mean it like that..." He bit his lip, wincing a bit. "It's just that I don't want it to be bigger than it already seems, ya know? Don't want it to be something out of our league."
Jockey returned her smile as they headed back towards the center of Queens. "Guess we could hit the city hall... maybe there'd be information there?" he suggested.

"Ah... right. I guess there are downsides to everything."
Whisper nodded, shrugging. She had gotten used to it, and she could handle it. It had made her stronger.
"You don't think it's a little confusin'?"
She shrugged, "Everything's confusin'. Ya just gotta learn ta ignore it and stick with what ya know. You can learn more from there, and there's always time ta put things tagether later."
"No, no, no! I didn't mean it like that... It's just that I don't want it to be bigger than it already seems, ya know? Don't want it to be something out of our league."
Whisper nodded. It made sense, and his heart was in the right place. He wasn't backing down, and neither was she. If it was out of their league, then Whisper was perfectly willing to go down trying. At least it would be an honorable way to go.
"Guess we could hit the city hall... maybe there'd be information there?"
She nodded, "That could work." Whisper wasn't going to argue, when Jockey probably knew more about what he was doing than she did. She had never looked for anyone in such a way before.

"Everything's confusin'. Ya just gotta learn ta ignore it and stick with what ya know. You can learn more from there, and there's always time ta put things tagether later."
He nodded thoughtfully. "I see your point... Guess I gotta look at a new angle, huh?"
"That could work."
"I think they keep a few records there," he explained as they headed toward the town hall. "Might take some lyin' and persuadin' but I think we can at least find out something about a Frederich that knows Rip's dad."

"I see your point... Guess I gotta look at a new angle, huh?"
Whisper shrugged, "That's up ta you. But yeah, I'd recommend it."
"I think they keep a few records there. Might take some lyin' and persuadin' but I think we can at least find out something about a Frederich that knows Rip's dad."
She grinned. "Now that is something that I know I can do. Just tell me a lie ta sell and I can do it, easy." She stated confidently, although she knew that she had her limits. She couldn't pretend to be Rip or anything like that, but she knew that she could easily sell a story if it was given to her. It was how she survived.

"That's up ta you. But yeah, I'd recommend it."
Jockey flashed her a small smile. "I think I'll take you up on it."
Perhaps that would help out whenever he bumped heads with Rip or the boys. Who knew?
"Now that is something that I know I can do. Just tell me a lie ta sell and I can do it, easy."
He couldn't help but grin back. "Then this'll be easy as pie. I don't do too well on lyin'... That's why I work at the racetrack most of the time," he mentioned a bit sheepishly. "Well..." He and Whisper looked up at the town hall. "Here we are. Now to find some answers."

"I think I'll take you up on it."
Whisper couldn't help but smile. Not many people listened to her when it came to advice, since she didn't tend to be the best with words. She wasn't philosophical or anything like that, and her thought patterns were often times much more simple than she made them seem. The fact that Jockey could keep up was a huge plus in her book.
"Then this'll be easy as pie. I don't do too well on lyin'... That's why I work at the racetrack most of the time."
She laughed, "Right, makes sense. Just follow my lead, and don't say anythin' stupid."
"Here we are. Now to find some answers."
Looking up at the large building was slightly intimidating, although she knew that she would have to make it work. Whisper couldn't back out now, especially now that they were onto something. "Let's solve this, once and for all." She agreed, slowly making her way inside the large building.

"Right, makes sense. Just follow my lead, and don't say anythin' stupid."
Jockey grinned and gave her a mock salute. "I'll be silent. You won't hear a peep from me, I swear."
He was quite relieved that she'd handle the talking. He wasn't so good at lying like he said. It would be terrible to ruin their only chances of getting more answers than questions.
"Let's solve this, once and for all."
He nodded and followed her into the large building known as the town hall. Thank goodness it wasn't too busy or too empty. They would fit right in. A lady at the desk raised her eyebrow as they approached her. "How can I help you?" she asked, eyeing them a bit disdainfully.

"I'll be silent. You won't hear a peep from me, I swear."
Whisper grinned. Finally, there was someone that she felt as though she could trust being beside her when she was doing something that could end up being so important. "Good. I won't question ya."
"How can I help you?"
While the expression on the lady's face wasn't one that Whisper appreciated, she managed to shoot the lady a soft smile, her gray eyes scanning the woman's face in search of something that she could play off of. There was always a way to approach someone that would get to them the most, and Whisper prided herself in being able to find that way and use it to her advantage.
"Hi! We need ta locate an old friend somehow, how can we do that?" There was a sweetness to Whisper's voice that normally wasn't there, considering the raspy, quiet quality that normally came with the girl's voice. It was something that she figured she would have to play up in an attempt to sound less like the very bottom of the lower class. People hardly ever trusted the newsies.

"Good. I won't question ya."
Jockey merely grinned, keeping to his promise of remaining silent.
"Hi! We need ta locate an old friend somehow, how can we do that?"
The lady sighed. It had been a long day. But at least the question was a simple one. "Down the hall, to the right. Ask to check the census."
Jockey had to admit he was impressed with Whisper. It seemed like she would be a great bird if Rip was ever looking for more. This might be much easier than he thought.

"Down the hall, to the right. Ask to check the census."
"Thank ya!" She chirped, grabbing Jockey's hand and leaving the desk, a slight skip in her step until they were out of sight. She finally let go of Jockey, huffing slightly and running her fingers through her long hair.
"Do ya know what a census is?" She whispered, figuring that it would be nice to know before going in, just in case there was some sort of security measure along with it.

"Do ya know what a census is?"
Jockey pursed his lips as they followed the lady's instructions. "Not sure ta be honest... I think it has ta do with taxes or something like that?"
He could be wrong, but he hoped he was right. It would help their chances of actually finding some answers. Frederich could be an important person.

"Not sure ta be honest... I think it has ta do with taxes or something like that?"
Swallowing thickly, Whisper nodded, closing her eyes tightly before marching right into the room that the lady had directed them to. She walked right up to the desk, only hesitating for a moment before flashing a bright smile.
"Hi! We're lookin' ta locate an old friend. The lady at the desk in the front told us ta ask ta check the 'census'. Can we do that?" She asked.

"Hi! We're lookin' ta locate an old friend. The lady at the desk in the front told us ta ask ta check the 'census'. Can we do that?"
An elderly looking man slowly looked up at the two newsies. He squinted at them and adjusted his glasses. "You need to look at the census?" He glanced back the rows and rows of books and papers behind him. "Well..." He looked over the two thoughtfully. "What you be looking for in the census? Can't let anyone in here, you know."
Jockey nodded to show he understood and glanced at Whisper. He trusted that she would say the right things to get the information they desperately needed.

"You need to look at the census?"
Whisper nodded, the smile on her lips never faltering, despite the slight worry that was beginning to build up inside of her as she struggled to remember every detail out there.
"What you be looking for in the census? Can't let anyone in here, you know."
"Yes, of course..." She swallowed thickly, casting a brief glance towards Jockey before beginning her story. "It was an old friend of my uncle's. He'd used ta come around, and my Uncle Kurt isn't really in any shape ta be leavin' his house. His name's Kurt Richardson, and we'd be lookin' ta find his old friend. His first name's Frederich, and I'm not quite sure on the last name. Uncle Kurt wasn't in good enough shape ta tell me, so I said I'd try findin' him myself." Whisper grinned.

Jockey couldn't help but grin. Whisper was really good at this! He was really impressed and it seemed like the old man was totally convinced with her acting skills.
The older man nodded in understanding. "Richardson, you say... hmmm." He turned towards the shelves behind him. "Richardson, Richardson..." he mumbled before disappearing behind a shelf. A few minutes later he made his way back. "Did you say where you were from? Silly me, I didn't ask you, did I?" He shook his head. "Well, it makes it easier on the both of us. Don't like make people wait more than they ought."

"Richardson, you say... hmmm. Richardson, Richardson..."
It came as a huge relief to Whisper seeing that she seemed to have convinced the man, although she held back her breath of relief until he had vanished behind a large shelf.
"Did you say where you were from? Silly me, I didn't ask you, did I? Well, it makes it easier on the both of us. Don't like make people wait more than they ought."
Whisper nearly choked on the breath of relief at his words. She forced the smile right back again, although it wavered a bit. How was she supposed to answer that?
"Just from right in Queens. Kinda near the outside, I guess. It ain't the best neighborhood but it's somethin'." She managed, although she shot a quick glance to Jockey, trying to get a little bit of help answering the question. How else could she answer it?

"Just from right in Queens. Kinda near the outside, I guess. It ain't the best neighborhood but it's somethin'."
The old man nodded thoughtfully. "Richardson in Queens..."
Jockey glanced at Whisper. "Mhmmm," he agreed. "Queens close ta Brooklyn," he added hoping that would help.
The man disappeared muttering underbreath. "Queens... Richardson... Not too many R's to go through."
Jockey crossed his fingers as they waited for the man to return. It was a large room and rather empty except for the three of them so even though the man was mumbling and muttering, they could hear him decently.
"R, R, R. Ah! Here we are..." the man chuckled to himself. "And Richardson. Hmmmm...."

"Mhmmm, Queens close ta Brooklyn."
Whisper grinned, mouthing a quick 'thank you' to Jockey before turning her attention back to the old man as he searched.
"Queens... Richardson... Not too many R's to go through. R, R, R. Ah! Here we are... And Richardson. Hmmmm...."
The mumbling from the man came as a bit of a relief when Whisper heard that he had found something. She just hoped that there would be something having to do with Frederich in there, so that they could begin putting things together more clearly. They had to find Rip, and perhaps this would be a huge clue of some sort.

Jockey merely grinned back. So far things were going smoothly! It was really nice after meeting a not-so-happy Kurt Richardson.
After some more mumbling, the man came back with a large book. "It took... awhile," he panted some and placed it on his desk. He deftly flipped through the pages. "Kurt Richardson... Right here." The man smiled at the two. "Should be the right one. And as for a Frederich, you are in luck." He pointed next to Kurt's name. "He's right here."
Jockey peered over the book, squinting some. He wasn't very good at reading upside down.
"A Mr. Frederich Richardson," the old man announced. "I suppose that would make him your other uncle."
Jockey gave Whisper a confused look. "Other uncle?"

"It took... awhile. Kurt Richardson... Right here. Should be the right one.
Whisper bit her lip softly as she looked at the book, seeing Kurt's name right there. Considering it was the only one, Whisper assumed that it was the right person. Things weren't going too badly after all.
"And as for a Frederich, you are in luck. He's right here. A Mr. Frederich Richardson. I suppose that would make him your other uncle."
Whisper's eyes widened. Other uncle? Frederich was Kurt's brother?
"Other uncle?"
"A-Are you sure? Uncle Kurt never said he had a brother..." She managed, her voice squeaking a bit as she questioned the man, turning her head in an attempt to make sure that her mind wasn't playing tricks on her. "Do ya know where we could find Frederich?"
