"Would you do that for me?"
Hoot cocked her head o the side. "Why wouldn't I?" she returned with a question. "You're my friend. I don't want you gettin' hurt."
"L.. L.. Ladies first."
She was puzzled by his action but got herself a cookie before passing Three Left the plate. She nibbled on her cookie thoughtfully.
"From what I can remember, I think you can just cross in Jersey from Bronx," she started slowly. "Not directly into Jersey City though. You'll be in Bergen I think..."

"Why wouldn't I? You're my friend. I don't want you gettin' hurt." she answered his question with a question.
Three Left sighed. "i'm just not used to people being this nice to me." "don't get me wrong, people aren't mean." he quickly added.
"From what I can remember, I think you can just cross in Jersey from Bronx," Hoot started slowly. "Not directly into Jersey City though. You'll be in Bergen I think..."
Three Left finished his second cookie. "and from were exactly would i leave the Bronx?" after a sip of his milk. he continued. "i'm not that familiar with other buroughs"

"I'm just not used to people being this nice to me. Don't get me wrong, people aren't mean."
Hoot looked a bit sad at his words. True, people weren't always nice... but it hurt to think that people weren't nice to Three Left.
"And from were exactly would I leave the Bronx?"
She tapped her chin thoughtfully. "West. West into Jersey instead of East into Queens." She finished off her cookie. "Let me get that map so we can make sure."
"I'm not that familiar with the other boroughs."
"I'm not either," Hoot admitted. "I only really know Jersey City and Manhattan. I just hear about Queens and Bronx. Only know about boroughs in Bergen because they are Jersey boroughs."

His new friend looked sad, Three Left didn't like that.
"people aren't mean to me miss Hoot, they're just a bit blunt sometimes." "miss Sand, has been nothing but good to me."
"West. West into Jersey instead of East into Queens." She said finishing her cookie. "Let me get that map so we can make sure."
Three Left drank the last of his milk, it was a little to sweet for his taste, but he enjoyed it nonetheless. at best he was decent at reading maps, so he mainly traveled using landmarks and his memory.
"I only really know Jersey City and Manhattan." Hoot admitted.
Three Left nodded "i know Manhattan like the back of my hand. wel, i used to. i know my way around Bronx. And i know how to get to Sheepshead Bay and Speer Cemetery."

"People aren't mean to me, Miss Hoot. They're just a bit blunt sometimes."
She pursed her lips some. Being blunt wasn't always being nice either...
"Miss Sand has been nothing but good to me."
Hoot nodded some. That was good to hear. She knew that Sand was the leader of Bronx so that gave her some comfort.
"I know Manhattan like the back of my hand. Well, I used to. I know my way around Bronx. And I know how to get to Sheepshead Bay and Speer Cemetery."
She nodded again and smiled as she fetched the map. "Well, I only really know my way around Jersey City." She chuckled softly. "I'm not very adventurous. Only stop in Manhattan sometimes to see what's at Medda's."
Hoot spread out the map on a nearby table for them to see. "It looks like you can definitely make it into Jersey from Bronx," she noted triumphantly. She smiled at Three Left as she showed him the New Jersey boroughs that bordered Bronx. "These over here are right above Jersey City and Hoboken. Should be a lot safer and faster than going around through Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten."

after she spread out the map on the table. she said. "It looks like you can definitely make it into Jersey from Bronx,"
she noted triumphantly. Hoot smiled at him as she showed him the New Jersey boroughs that bordered Bronx. Three Left looked at the map. "i am not that good with maps, can you point me to some landmarks like the lodge or the distribution centre. or crotona park.*"
"These over here are right above Jersey City and Hoboken. Should be a lot safer and faster than going around through Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten." Hoot showed it to him.
"so passing west of jerome park resevoir* and staying north of Kingsbridge.*" he was proud of himself for reading a map that quickly. "now its just finding a way to cross the Hudson." he said while sitting crosslegged on the table. his shoes were worn but otherwise undamaged. still, he would look for a shoe store in the near future.
* googled a vintage map of bronx.

"I am not that good with maps, can you point me to some landmarks like the lodge or the distribution center or crotona park?"
Hoot nodded and looked back at the map. Ms. King certainly would have marked off areas like those. She pointed to the three boroughs that Three Left would cross through before entering Hoboken and Jersey City. "You'll be passing through Englewood Cliffs first, then into Edgewater, and lastly into Cliffside Park." She pointed to each borough. "The lodges are pretty close to the borders so they should be easy to find."
She kindly pointed them out for Three Left just in case.

"You'll be passing through Englewood Cliffs first,"
Three Left Looked at the map to find a way around manhattan. "northern part of Englewood it is." he said with a sigh.
"There has to be a way across the Hudson without going trough Hattan." he was starting to get a little frustrated.
Hoot pointed out the lodges to him. "i meant landmarks from Bronx." wow that sounded angrier than he wanted it to. "this is helpfull too though dont want to get lost, now do i?" he quickly added while bracing for impact, even though he knew, Hoot Wouldn't smack him over the head, like his dad used to do.

"There has to be a way across the Hudson without going through Hattan."
Hoot looked at Three Left in surprise. "But there is." She pointed to Bronx and carefully traced over to the Jersey borough directly across from Bronx. "You won't have to go through Manhattan at all."
"I meant landmarks from Bronx."
She blushed in embarrassment. "Oh. I'm sorry." She hadn't meant to made him angry. She had made the mistake of thinking that he was looking for landmarks in Jersey.
Her bangs covered her face as she leaned over to get a better look at Bronx. "Umm... it looks like the distribution center is close to the border..."
"This is helpful too though, don't want to get lost, now do I?"
Hoot gave him a small smile and nodded. "Yeah, getting lost is the worst."

"But there is. You won't have to go through Manhattan at all."
Three Left looked at the map and he didn't see a bridge. then again he might be looking with his nose. "i am not a great swimmer miss Hoot, and even if i was, taking a dip in the Hudson aint advisable."
"Umm... it looks like the distribution center is close to the border..." he looked at the surounding area. "thats my selling corner." he said, recognising the store directly behind it.
she smiled at him. "Yeah, getting lost is the worst." i think i can make it, mr Barone told me once, that you only get lost when you stop looking.

"I am not a great swimmer Miss Hoot, and even if I was, taking a dip in the Hudson ain't advisable."
Hoot couldn't hide the hurt in her eyes at his comment. She was shocked that he would think she would suggest swimming across the great body of water. She quickly shook her head. "By ferry. There are several ferry stops along Bronx that go into New Jersey."
"That's my selling corner."
She brightened some. "That's good."
"I think I can make it, Mr. Barone told me once that you only get lost when you stop looking."
She smiled. "Those are some wise words. I think you will be just fine."

"By ferry. There are several ferry stops along Bronx that go into New Jersey." she looked as if he had offended her.
"i didn't mean it like that miss Hoot, i shouldn't have said it though. how can i make it up to you?"
"Those are some wise words." Hoot said smiling. "I think you will be just fine."
"Mr Barone works at the store behind my selling spot. we talk sometimes. he tells great stories, and has good advice."

"I didn't mean it like that Miss Hoot. I shouldn't have said it though. How can I make it up to you?"
Hoot wasn't offended, just a little hurt. But, she supposed she had been a bit too forward in her thinking. She had only just met Three Left. She couldn't expect to be understood or to understand him after only an hour or so of knowing each other. It still hurt though. She cared too much was what the other girls said.
"It's fine," she said softly.
"Mr. Barone works at the store behind my selling spot. He tells great stories and has good advice."
She nodded, smiling. "That's very nice of him."

Three left got up and looked up at Hoot. "i guess i have to get going if i want to make it in time for supper. Bronx might not be a big borough, but its still quite a walk. i might just make it if i hitch a few rides."

"I guess I have to get going if I want to make it in time for supper."
Hoot looked at the clock in surprise. She hadn't realized how much time had passed. It would be a good idea for Three Left to start heading back.
"Bronx might not be a big borough, but it's still quite a walk. I might just make it if I hitch a few rides."
She nodded some. "How about I walk with you?" she suggested. "Company is always nice."
And well, she wanted to keep an eye out for the younger newsie. It wasn't like she had anything better to do, plus she hadn't really been getting any good sleep so staying up late wasn't a problem.

"How about I walk with you?"
"sure, that would be nice." he said, pulling his cap down a little further.
"Company is always nice."
"that highly depends on the kind of company." he laughed turning serious instantly like a switch was flipped. he said: "but you and i make great company miss Hoot. being educated i mean."

"Sure, that would be nice."
Hoot smiled as she followed him out the lodge. She left a note for Ms. King, letting the lodge owner know that she might not be back that night.
"That highly depends on the kind of company, but you and I make great company, Miss Hoot. Being educated I mean."
"We really do make great company," she agreed happily. It had been awhile since she last felt this light hearted.

"are you going all the way into bronx?" Three Left asked excited, as he watched her leave a note.
"We really do make great company," Hoot agreed, she seemed happy.
"that we do." he said matter of factly. looking very grown up, especially since he wasn't that big.

"Are you going all the way into Bronx?"
Hoot smiled, seeing her friend's excitement. "I am."
"That we do."
She laughed softly and smiled once more. "We really do."
It was nice to have a new friend. Not that the newsies in Jersey City weren't friendly. Hoot just enjoyed getting to know new people from different places. Perhaps she would start visiting the other boroughs. Three Left was very nice. Certainly the other newsies were just as nice.

Hoot smiled, "I am." she said.
"i don't know the whole Bronx, but i know enough to find my way. i could give you a little tour."
Three Left said balancing on a low wall. When he tried to crouch down on the corner of the wall, he slipped and crashed into a pile of crates, on the other end of the wall "Margarlach!" he yelped.

"I don't know the whole Bronx, but I know enough to find my way. I could give you a little tour."
Hoot's smile widened. "I'd like that very much."
If she was going to start visiting other boroughs, it would be good to get to know them. A tour was just the thing she needed.
"Margarlach!"
She was about to tell him to be careful, but it was too late. He let out a yell. She ran around the wall frantically.
"Are you okay?!" she asked, voice full of worry.

"I'd like that very much."
Three Left was about to reply when he slipped.
"Are you okay?!" Hoot sounded worried.
Three Left clenched his teeth, he couldn't curse infront of a lady. being irish he was used to using a variety of colourfull words, to voice his displeasure.
"ta me go maith." he said getting up, "Conas ata tu?" he asked automatically, before checking himself over. "i might have a few splinters though." he switched back and forth without noticing.

"Ta me go maith. Comas ata tu?"
Hoot blinked in surprise. Maybe Three Left his head pretty good? She didn't understand a word that just came out of his mouth...
"I might have a few splinters though."
She was relieved when he began speaking English. Hoot wasn't sure what he said before, but at least she could understand him now.
"Let me see," she said kindly. "Not good to let splinters sit."

Hoot blinked at him in surprise.
"my apologies miss Hoot," he said blinking rapidly to chase away the dizziness
"it means, i am good, how are you."
"Let me see," Hoot said, as she looked him over. a large splinter was sticking out of his pant leg. "Not good to let splinters sit." Hoot said. Three Left tried to pull it out himself, and groaned in pain. he held back the tears, and clenched his teeth again, in order to keep himself from shouting profanaties no lady should ever hear.

"My apologies Miss Hoot."
"Oh no, don't apologize," she replied quickly. "I was just worried about you."
"It means I am good, how are you?"
Hoot nodded. Well that definitely made her feel better knowing what he had said.
She concentrated on pulling out the splinter as painless as she could. She was no doctor, but she knew enough to pull out a splinter.
"There..." She gave his shoulder a gentle squeeze. "You were very brave."
