Snowflake stood in the hallway, waiting for the piano lesson to be over. She disliked how the dance school always had to wait for music lessons to be over before they could use the rooms. It was a little unfair that music got more attention, but it couldn't really be helped. After all, this was the Brooklyn Academy of Music not Dance. But she could dream, couldn't she?
She sighed and decided to warm up a little. Do some basic stretching while waiting helped pass the time. She was a little early after all. School had gotten out early since Mrs. Buttons had been feeling ill. She had plenty of time to warm up and possibly even get some homework done.

It had been a while since Astrid had been to the Academy. Being from Queens made it harder and harder for her to get to Brooklyn. Today she had made it. With her violin in hand she couldn't wait to play in one of the rooms and just hear the music. It always sounded different in the academy then it did in the lodge. Astrid loved hearing the sound in the little music rooms. She loves it here. It felt safe. Separate from the chaos of the outside bouroughs fighting. It was a haven. Astrid had hoped one of the rooms would be open but so far there was nothing open. Seeing a girl stretching outside of one of the room she though she could ask and see if the other girl knew of an open room. "Excuse me." She said cautiously hoping to not startle the girl. "Do ya know if there are any free rooms?"

Snowflake had just finished stretching when she heard someone walking down the hall. She stood up in hopes that a room had just emptied. However, she was disappointed when the girl asked her if there were any empty rooms.
"No, all the rooms are in use," she said sadly.
She supposed she could work on some homework now. Soon, very soon, the dance class would be able to get a room.

No, all the rooms are in use,
Astrid sighed. "You waiting for a room too...?" She asked looking at the girl. She sat in the hall and opened the case to her violin. Seeing it always calmed her. "What ya doing here? Dancin'?" Astrid asked as she looked up at the girl. "I'm Astrid by the way..." she said softly in case someone could over hear them.

Snowflake glanced up at the girl as she sighed before nodding. "Yes, my dance class reserves a room after the lessons are finished," she explained. She hadn't meant to sound haughty. She only meant to state the facts.
She pursed her lips as the girl introduced herself. As it was proper, she stood up and returned the introduction. "I'm Clara. Pleased to meet you." She offered her hand politely.

Yes, my dance class reserves a room after the lessons are finished,
Astrid nodded a bit. "I didn't know they did dance classes." She smiled weakly and hoped she didn't bother the girl.
I'm Clara. Pleased to meet you
"Good ta meet ya." She smiled and shook the other girl's hand.

Snowflake was a little surprised that Astrid was not aware of the dance class. However, it really wasn't that surprising. The dance class was rather small and had only been around for a couple of years.
She smiled back as they shook hands. "You from Brooklyn?" she asked curiously.
She wasn't familiar with any of the other boroughs' newsies. The most she knew was that Brooklyn was led by Spot Conlon and Manhattan by Jack Kelly. She wasn't even really familiar with the Harlem newsies despite being from there and selling there occasionally.

You from Brooklyn?
Astrid looked down as she pretended to inspect the latch on her violin case. The one question she didn't want to answer. With everything going on with Queens and Brooklyn it was bound to be a hard question to answer. "Nah. Just come here ta practice sometimes. It sounds better in a music hall then it does at the lodge." She looked up and smiled a bit. "Besides people don't tell me ta stop playing here." Maybe if she just stayed away from the fact she was from Queens it would be alright. This girl seemed nice enough, but she knew better then to trust people. Didn't mean she couldn't be friendly though.

Snowflake sat back down to continue her stretching as the older girl replied.
"I'm not from Brooklyn either," she admitted. "I live in Harlem with my uncle."
She carefully continued her stretches as she watched Astrid inspect her violin. It was a beautiful instrument. If she wasn't so in love with dancing, she probably would have picked up music.
"I'm originally from Queens though," she added in after thought. "I miss it sometimes. Do you ever go there?" she asked curiously. After all, Brooklyn and Queens were side by side.

"I'm not from Brooklyn either, I live in Harlem with my uncle.
Astrid looked at the other girl and nodded. "Harlem's nice...tried staying there once...just isn't home ta me." She shrugged gently. Astrid could feel the other girl's eyes watching her as she checked the violin. If this wasn't the only thing she had left of her mother she would let the girl try it out.
I'm originally from Queens though, I miss it sometimes. Do you ever go there?
She looked up a bit shocked. "Ya are from Queens?" She smiled a bit before looking down. "Be glad ya live in Harlem. Queens at the same as it used ta be..." Astrid said sadly. It used to be a nice place. Then when her parents died...all she kept seeing was the bad. "Might wanna be careful who ya tell your from Queens too. Brooklyn newsies ain't always understandin when it comes ta people from Queens." Astrid said as she tuned her violin lightly by ear. "A lot of hate in both boroughs...." she added softly looking at the girl as she tuned the A string to just the right pitch.

Snowflake just smiled as Astrid complimented her current home but stated it just wasn't home for her. She felt the same way, but it wasn't really like she could move back to Queens on her own. Well, technically... she could if she really wanted to, but that would mean she would have to give up school and dance school. She couldn't do that. Plus, she would hate to upset her lonely uncle.
She was a bit surprised at the surprised look on the other girl's face. "Yes? I was born and raised there." She cocked her head slightly as Astrid explained that it was different now. It hadn't seem any different to her when she passed through in her uncle's carriage.
"Why is that?" she asked curiously. She didn't understand the harm of telling where she was from not like she did it much anyway. "All the Newsies I ever met seem just fine with telling where they came from."

"Yes? I was born and raised there."
Astrid smiled. "Me too. It's jus' home." She said thinking back to the way it once was. "Even though it ain't great now...I ain't leavin." Astrid noticed the girls curious expression.
"Ya ain't been in Queens in a while have ya?" She asked softly.
Why is that? All the Newsies I ever met seem just fine with telling where they came from.
"Ya can tell newsies, but Brooklyn newsies will treat ya nicer if ya say your from Harlem insteada Queens." She looked at the girl. "Do ya not know what happened...?" Astrid asked carefully putting the violin up. "Brooklyn and Queens ain't exactly friendly with each other."

Snowflake smiled slightly and nodded. Queens was just home. Though she wasn't sure what she meant by saying that it wasn't great. It seemed pretty much the same when she went by. The same happy place she had grown up in.
"I was there last week," she stated firmly, a bit upset that the girl seemed convinced that her old home had changed for the worse.
She shrugged lightly. There really wasn't a chance she'd meet Brooklyn newsies anyway. She sold in Harlem whenever she had time. She didn't understand why Brooklyn would care if she was really from Queens.
"What do you mean what happened?" she asked a little sharply. She was not pleased with this girl's skeptical view on her old home. O thing had change. Nothing could change, right?
"So? I don't see how that make Queens any different than when I left."

I was there last week
"My bad..." She said softly. If she was in Queens last week how did she not notice how it changed. The most of the boy newsies were always looking for any shred of information to tell Rip about Brooklyn. The girls...they just tried to stay out of it. That's why most didn't leave the lodge after dark. It always got worse after dark. The darkness tended to bring out the gangs as well which was a main reason that she stayed out of sight.
What do you mean what happened?
Astrid raised a brow. How did she not know? Most newsies in Queens knew about their leader's hatred for Brooklyn. "With Rip and Spot? I mean it even goes back ta Blizzard too..." Astrid had been around the lodge for the very end of Blizzard's regain as leader, but she knew enough of what had happened. With Rip though she knew all to well what happened between the two leaders to bring on this hatred. "They all hate each other..." She said in a bit of a daze thinking about how it had once been with Spot's cousin Darcy, Rip, and herself. It had been so different. The first good thing she had since her parents murder.
So? I don't see how that make Queens any different than when I left
Astrid had barely shaken off the daze of the past hearing the girl. "If ya don't think it's different then that's up to you..." This girl didn't live in Queens. She didn't see the way the other girls in the lodge looked scared when someone was late coming back. This girl lived in Harlem. Safe away from the chaos of Queens. Like she had told the girl earlier. It was home...and she couldn't just walk away from her home. No matter how bad it got. She would let the girl live thinking her home was the same as it used to be. Let her have that peace as she lived away from it all.

Snowflake furrowed her brows slightly. The girl did not seem like she believed her. She was about to reply when she noticed her dance class had just arrived.
She furrowed her brows again. She knew of Spot... but who was Rip. "Rip? Who is he?"
After all, she had never been a newsie in Queens. She wouldn't really know much about the newsies in her home borough. Plus she had only recently began working as a newsie in Harlem.
She frowned as Astrid mentioned that Spot and Rip hated each other. She gathered her things up as her class headed into a now empty classroom. "Why do they hate each other? Both boroughs seem very nice to me."
She shrugged as she headed towards her class. "I suppose so... I have a lot to think about when I get home." She have Astrid a small smile. "It was nice meeting you. I hope maybe we can talk after my class?"

Rip? Who is he?
Astrid tries to hid the shock on her face. "Rip? He's the leader of Queens." She explained gently. This girl may be from Queens and she may visit, but she didn't know of the nasty truth beyond the surface. Astrid didn't want to destroy that bliss of ignorance.
Why do they hate each other? Both boroughs seem very nice to me.
"A lot happened." She watched the girl gather up her things. "Too much ta tell ya before your class I'm afraid." She smiled softly. "Don't want you to be late after ya waited this long." Astrid smiled softly.
I suppose so... I have a lot to think about when I get home. It was nice meeting you. I hope maybe we can talk after my class?
Astrid waved a bit and smiled. "Nice meeting ya too. And I'll probably be still waitin if ya wanna talk after class." She offered with a smile.

Snowflake seemed a bit perplexed at the girl’s answer. For some reason the name Rip just didn’t feel familiar. But then, she hadn’t known much about the newsies when she had lived in Queens. But still, a name like that should be remembered. Well she certainly hoped she could find out more. She was dreadfully curious. If she ever returned to Queens, which was unlikely, she ought to know more about it.
“I’ll try to meet up with you after class,” she promised, hurrying off to catch up with her fellow classmates.
Dancing was her favorite thing to do. The music was beautiful and just the sound of the thud of a perfectly landed jump was wonderful. She wished it would never end. It alas, all good things must come to an end. At least she could talk to her new friend some more. That is, if she was still there.

I’ll try to meet up with you after class,
Astrid nodded. “Alright I’ll see ya.” She said with a bit of a smile. So far this wasn’t a bad trip. She had made a new friend. Once the dance class started she went in search of a free room just to play music for a while. Astrid looked forward to playing in the rooms because the sound was always so perfect at the music hall.
Astrid smiles happily seeing a smaller room free up. She quickly made her way in and sat her case down. Carefully pulling the violin out of the case she tuned it again expertly and then tightened her bow so she could run it across the tuned strings. Fixing the instrument between her chin and her shoulder, Astrid played a few notes to check her tuning. She smiled hearing each tunes note. Then she moved into one of her morher’s favorites. Astrid didn’t know the name but it was a song her mother’s grandmother used to play on the same violin. It was soft at first and comforting like a lullaby. She poured all her emotions into getting that one song to sound perfect. She tried not to think about what had happened and what would have happened if her family stayed in France.

Snowflake was the last to leave the class once it finished. She was reluctant to leave. It was her favorite time of the day and week. She hated when it ended. She glanced back at the room longingly. Tomorrow, she would be back. It just seemed so far away. At least she had made a new friend.
Though, she wasn't sure where she was. She just gathered her things and started looking around. Peeking into each room until she finally discovered her friend playing her violin in practice room.
She lightly knocked on the door, not wanting to disturb her friend.

Astrid stopped and looked up hearing the knock on the door. She smiled a bit seeing Clara in the door. “Come in.” She said movinger her bow hand to let the girl know she could come in. “How was you’re class?” Astrid asked as she sat the violin in the case.

Snowflake smiled as Astrid waved for her to come in.
"Class went well. Thank you for asking," she replied with a smile.
She sat down beside her friend. "How did your practice go?" she asked curiously. "It sounded pretty good to me."
She wasn't a genius when it came to music, but she did know what sounded good. Certain notes should sound a certain way. She just didn't know what it was called. But if you asked her about dancing, she could name it all.

Class went well. Thank you for asking
"That's good." Astrid smiled as she put the violin and bow away. "I'm sure ya did real well."
How did your practice go? It sounded pretty good to me.
Astrid let her hands linger on the violin before she closed the case. "It was good. I always thought it sounded better here." She laughed softly. "Sometimes the other girls at the lodge don't like hearin me ya know?"

”That’s good. I’m sure ya did real well.”
Snowflake blushed. “Thank you. I do pretty well if I say so myself. I want to be a dancer in the theatre.”
”It was good. I always thought it sounded better here. Sometimes the other girls at the lodge don’t like hearin me ya know?”
She gave her a surprised look. “Why not? You sound fantastic... I could just dance when you play.”
Snowflake smiled and did a small ballet leap. “But then I always want to dance.”

Thank you. I do pretty well if I say so myself. I want to be a dancer in the theatre.
“I’m sure you’ll make it if ya keep takin classes.” Astrid smiles some.
Why not? You sound fantastic... I could just dance when you play.
She shrugged some. “Most a the girls just wanna sleep when they get back. Too much noise and...I dunno...” Astrid looked down at the violin as she locked the case too her violin. “And thank you...my ma taught me to play. Always said play what’s in your heart and it’ll never be bad.”
But then I always want to dance.
“Maybe I could play and you dance sometime. Ya have to dance ta real instruments in theater, right?” Astrid asked with a smile.

Snowflake blushed at Astrid's compliment. "Thank you... Madame says those of us who keep practicing and are faithful in attendance will be able to be true ballerinas." She sighed softly at the thought. Ballet was her life. She could not imagine never attending classes again.
She was still surprised that the girls at the lodge would consider it noisy. The violin made the most beautiful music. That was not noise.
"You're very welcome," she responded brightly. "My mama said something like that except with dancing," she giggled.
Snowflake brightened at the thought of Astrid playing. "Oh that would be wonderful! I would like that very much. It would be great to play to music."
Of course, she could dance at home with music, but when she was out and about as a newsie it was difficult to practice without a little music.
