Jus’ admit it. The hat’s lucky
“Neva.” She laughed a bit.
Harlem’s leader? What was she doin’ here?
Sand still looked at her feet. “Wanted ta make an alliance. Bonding over being girls or something...” she explained a bit.
What sort of look was she givin’ him
“The way those girls were lookin at ya when you were sellin them papes.” She explained not looking up still.
It ain’t your fault. An’ you ain’t stupid. Blondie shouldn’t stay mad at ya. You were worried about him and he just don’t understand that is what it probably is
She shrugged a bit. “Blondie said I was jealous...I don’t know what that means really...it’s weird and I don’t like it if it makes him mad at me...”

”Neva.”
“Then I’ll just be takin’ that back.” He slipped the hat off her head. “Don’t need it if ya can’t admit it’s lucky.”
”Wanted ta make an alliance.”
Smolder pursed his lips. An alliance wasn’t a bad thing... Bronx certainly needed it, but it would be better for Bronx to have one with a bigger borough like Manhattan or Brooklyn.
”Bonding over being girls or something...
He shrugged. “Well I suppose that ain’t a bad thing.”
”The way those girls were lookin’ at ya when you were sellin’ them papes.”
Smolder made a face. “Sand...” He sighed. “You know it ain’t like that for me.” He could tell she didn’t approve since she wasn’t even looking at him. “A guy’s gotta sell somehow. As for Blondie...” He shrugged. “Did he seem ta be lookin’ at her the same way?” He nudged her lightly. “Is that why it’s botherin’ ya? ‘Cause if that’s the case, Blondie’s got the problem.”
”Blondie said I was jealous... I don’t know what that means really...”
He cocked his head. “Said you were jealous?” Now that changed things up a bit. He wondered... no, that couldn’t be, could it? If so... He glanced at Sand. He’d have to have a good talking to with Blondie.
”It’s weird and I don’t like it if it makes him mad at me...”
He made a face before letting out a long breath. “Sand... now be honest with me. Do you like Blondie?”
Smolder wasn’t sure what answer he wanted to hear, but he knew he needed to get to the bottom of this. It wasn’t right for Sand to be guilty of something that wasn’t her fault.

Then I’ll just be takin’ that back. Don’t need it if ya can’t admit it’s lucky.
“Well fine then. Don’t need ya hat anyway.” She smiled at him.
Well I suppose that ain’t a bad thing.
She shrugged a bit. “I guess....I wanna be more then just a girl though....” she said with a bit of a sigh. She was more then just a girl. Sand wanted to be known for more then the fact that she was a girl.
Sand...You know it ain’t like that for me. A guy’s gotta sell somehow. As for Blondie...Did he seem ta be lookin’ at her the same way? Is that why it’s botherin’ ya? ‘Cause if that’s the case, Blondie’s got the problem.
“Nah I know you don’t mean it like that...I just...I don’t like the way she looked at him. Those girls with you didn’t bother me. Just confused me...I don’t understand...” she explained a bit. Sand didn’t like not knowing things. “Blondie wasn’t looking at her like that. He said he didn’t feel like that with her. He seemed nervous...scared kinda...he ain’t tellin me something.”
Said you were jealous?
Sand nodded some.
Sand... now be honest with me. Do you like Blondie?
“Course I like him. He’s my best friend. Why wouldn’t I like him?” Sand asked looking up at Smolder not sure she understood the question.

”Well fine then. Don’t need ya hat anyway.”
Smolder smiled back. “All the more luck for me then.”
”I guess... I wanna be more then just a girl though...”
He shook his head. “Don’t be thinkin’ like that. You’re not ‘just a goil.’ You’re Sand, the leader of Bronx.” He nudged her. “Don’t let anyone make ya think otherwise.”
”Nah I know you don’t mean it like that...”
He raised an eyebrow. “You can say that, but I can tell you don’t like it.”
”I just... I don’t like the way she looked at him. Those girls with you didn’t bother me. Just confused me... I don’t understand...”
Smolder looked a bit more serious. He had a sinking feeling...
”Blondie wasn’t looking at her like that. He said he didn’t feel like that with her.”
He nodded. Well, that was good? At least that proved to Smolder that Blondie wasn’t a flirt or anything like that.
”He seemed nervous... scared kinda. He ain’t tellin’ me something.”
He furrowed his brow. Nervous? Scared? “That don’t sound like Blondie... I think you’re on ta somethin’ though. His clothes when he first came here... made me wonder about the kid,” he muttered more to himself than to Sand.
”Course I like him. He’s my best friend. Why wouldn’t I like him?”
Smolder made a face. “No... jus’ forget it, okay? I think this might be somethin’ you need to think on your own.”
He wasn’t about to dabble with that, no siree. He stayed out of love problems. Sand would have to figure out for herself. Besides, it was just assumption on his part.

ll the more luck for me then.
Sand rolled her eyes dramatically hearing him.
Don’t be thinkin’ like that. You’re not ‘just a goil.’ You’re Sand, the leader of Bronx. Don’t let anyone make ya think otherwise.
She smiled as he nudged her. He always knew what to say to make her feel better. “I’ll do my best not ya let ‘me get to me.”
You can say that, but I can tell you don’t like it.
“I just don’t understand....ya know I don’t like not knowin things...” Sand explained softly awkward that she didn’t understand.
That don’t sound like Blondie... I think you’re on ta somethin’ though. His clothes when he first came here... made me wonder about the kid,
Sand sighed. “He just hidin somethin and he ain’t tellin me and I ain’t gonna push him on it...he’ll tell me eventually...if he eva talks to me again...” she said softly.
No... jus’ forget it, okay? I think this might be somethin’ you need to think on your own.
“Nah! None of that figure it out. What are ya talkin abou?” Sand asked catching he was trying to stay away from the subject. “Can’t try ta help then not help at all.” She said watching him.

”I’ll do my best not ta let ‘me get to me.’”
Smolder shook his head some. Sand did have a tendency to judge herself a little harshly. He supposed it came with being leader, but at least she was promising that she would work on it. That was a step in the right direction.
”I just don’t understand...”
He sighed. “It’s just a way to make whatever money we can. Playin’ sick, makin’ up a headline? It’s all the same, Sand.”
”Ya know I don’t like not knowin’ things...”
He pursed his lips. “Jus’ ask then. Anyone really. No one bites ‘round here and you know that.”
”He just hidin’ somethin’ and he ain’t tellin’ me and I ain’t gonna push on it... he’ll tell me eventually... if he eva talks to me again...”
Smolder shrugged. He felt like Blondie was hiding something too... but if she wasn’t going to push, then he probably shouldn’t either. It would probably just make things worse if he got involved.
“Jus’ give him and yourself a little time... I’m sure he’ll come back around.”
”Nah! None of that figure it out. What are ya talkin’ about?”
He scrunched up his face, but shook his head. “No.... this is somethin’ you gotta figure out for yourself.” He started walking a little faster, hoping to distract her from the subject. He didn’t want to really face what this could mean if his thoughts were right.
”Can’t try ta help then not help at all.”
“I don’t think this is somethin’ I can help ya wit’,” he admitted. “You gotta figure it out for yourself here an’ here.” He poked her chest then her forehead. “That’s all I can say...” He tipped his hat as they reached the corner of the street where the boys’ lodge was. “Later, Sand.”

It’s just a way to make whatever money we can. Playin’ sick, makin’ up a headline? It’s all the same, Sand
She nodded a bit. "Alright..." Sand said trying to get a handle on it.
us’ ask then. Anyone really. No one bites ‘round here and you know that.
"I don't like askin...especially since I'm leada it gets harder...I feel like I'm supposed ta know things..." she explained quietly as she shifted a bit awkwardly.
Jus’ give him and yourself a little time... I’m sure he’ll come back around.
"Yeah..." That wasn't exactly what she wanted. She wanted things to be normal. Sand wanted to be like it used to be. Happy. Not worrying...too much anyway.
No.... this is somethin’ you gotta figure out for yourself.
Sand scrunched her face. Why was he walking faster? She moved to keep up with him. What was he talking about? Why did he seem so off? He was uncomfortable. Was that why he was walking faster? What did she do to make him uncomfortable? Why was she not understanding this?
I don’t think this is somethin’ I can help ya wit’, You gotta figure it out for yourself here an’ here. That’s all I can say...
She made an even more confused face. What was he talking about? "What's either a those gotta do with anything?" She asked so confused. He was trying to get off the subject and she was so confused as to why.
Later, Sand
"Smolder." She said quickly not sure she wanted him to leave. "I...I'll see ya..." Sand said reluctantly. He clearly didn't want to continue this. She also felt she was pushing her luck with how they had left things previously. It was probably better this way.

”Alright...”
Smolder wasn’t sure if she really understood, but as time passed she would eventually know what it was.
”I don’t like askin’... especially since I’m leada it gets harder... I feel like I’m supposed ta know things...”
He shrugged. “It don’t hurt ya ask even if you are leada. No one knows everything. I know for a fact that Jack asks Davey a lot and Spot is always askin’ his boids for information. Askin’ won’t make you look bad. Might even make Newsies feel more comfortable knowin’ you ain’t that different from them.”
And wow was he speaking a lot today.
”Yeah...”
It would take some time... but soon, things would probably get back to normal for Sand. Well, that’s what Smolder was hoping for.
”what’s either of those gotta do with anything?”
He paused and turned towards Sand. “Just... just think about it, okay? It’ll come ta you eventually...”
Not like he really wanted her to figure it out. But then again, it might be good for her. He was just be overprotective.
”Smolder. I... I’ll see ya..”
He could hear the reluctance in her voice. She didn’t want to drop the subject, but he was already half the street away from her. This was for the best. He couldn’t give her any advice on this matter, not really. She needed to figure this out on her own. It was all for the best.

It don’t hurt ya ask even if you are leada. No one knows everything. I know for a fact that Jack asks Davey a lot and Spot is always askin’ his bliss for information. Askin’ won’t make you look bad. Might even make Newsies feel more comfortable knowin’ you ain’t that different from them
Sand nodded some. He was right. One thing he was forgetting was the one person she asked questions too didn't want to see her. That thought only mad her sad. What if they never fixed things? What if he never wanted to see her again? Many more questions along that thought ran through her head. What would she do without her best friend though...?
Just... just think about it, okay? It’ll come ta you eventually...
She watched him leave more confused and sad then when he had found her today. He had tried though. That's what mattered. He had tried to fix it. Just not the way she had hoped. Smolder had made her smile and laugh when she didn't think she could. Sand was always glad he was in her life. He made being stuck in a strange country alone bearable.
