Grab a jacket
She pulled a jacket on and followed Smolder out. She missed Blondie. Not knowing where he was or if he was coming back.

Smolder grabbed Sand’s hand as they headed out. He wanted to make sure she didn’t zone out on him as they walked. They would talk once they reached the zoo. There was a quiet end that wasn’t busy at all where they could sit and talk and sort everything out.
As soon as they reached the exhibit, he sat Sand on a bench and stood in front of her. “Now, out wit’ it. What all happened an’ why did Blondie leaved? He don’t seem the type ta just up and leave.”

Sand stared at her shoes before she looked up at Smolder. “I found out what he was hiding...” she whispered as tears filled her eyes. “His parents found him and he ran cause he didn’t want em ya find him. It’s my fault they found him. It’s my fault he left Smolder.” She said wiping the tears from her eyes.

”I found out what he was hiding...”
Smolder raised an eyebrow. Blondie was hiding something? But then again, it sounded right. He did seem like he was hiding something.
His parents found him and he ran cause he didn’t want em ta find him.”
He frowned. “His parents?”
”It’s my fault they found him. It’s my fault he left, Smolder.”
His frown deepened. “Now hold on. How is it that they found ‘im? You’re still not tellin’ me everythin’, Sand.”

“They found him cause he was out walkin by Harlem and they saw him and came in a nice carriage. And...and they tried ya get him ya go with him...” she said trying to get her thoughts in order of what had happened. “And he yelled at em and said he wasn’t goin back and he ran off...he just ran...he didn’t stop...and I couldn’t catch him...” Sand wiped her eyes. “Smolder I don’t think he’s coming back...”

”They found him cause he was out walkin by Harlem and they saw him and came in a nice carriage.”
Smolder found his frown deepening. So Blondie was a rich kid? Or at least a well to do kid. That explained a whole lot.
”And... and they tried ta get him ta go with him...”
He nodded some, beginning to grasp the situation some.
”And he yelled at them and said he wasn’t goin back and he ran off... he just ran... he didn’t stop... and I couldn’t catch him...”
Smolder awkwardly pat her back. “It’s okay...”
”Smolder, I don’t think he’s coming back...”
He pursed his lips. “He might not come back,” he started slowly. “But that don’t mean you can’t go lookin’ for him. Sounds ta me like he didn’t run because of you. He just didn’t want to be with his parents... guy probably left here so they can’t find him again. Nothin against you.”

She looked up at him. “So I can find him...I can find him and bring him home...” she said softly.

”So I can find him...”
Smolder nodded. “Yeah... You can look for him.”
”I can find him and bring him home...”
He patted her on the back. “Now that’s more like it, Sand. Start lookin’ and keep a stiff upper lip.”

Yeah... You can look for him.
Sand smiled. “I’ll find him...”
Now that’s more like it, Sand. Start lookin’ and keep a stiff upper lip
“Thanks Smolder.” She said softly.

”I’ll find him... Thanks, Smolder.”
Smolder just shrugged and sat down beside Sand. “It was nothin’... Just don’t let stuff keep ya down. Bronx needs ya.”

Three Left watched from a distance. their body language was easy enough to read, "miss Sand blames herself for something, and mr Smolder is telling her it aint her fault." he mumbled with a cold smile while being poorly hidden behind a barrel.

She nodded some. “I just...I can’t believe he left...he didn’t even say goodbye...” she leaned her head on Smolder’s shoulder.

”I just... I can’t believe he left... he didn’t even say goodbye...”
Smolder frowned. He hated how upset this all made Sand. He was upset at Blondie for leaving so suddenly, but he understood under the circumstances. Yet a goodbye could have been the least of his worries.
“Take a break,” he suggested. “Bronx will all right a couple says. You rest and recover over all this.”

Take a break,
Sand looked up a bit surprised. “I can’t do that...can I...?” She asked entirely unsure on everything. She was sure Blondie would have left without saying goodbye and he had run away not even taking all of his things.
Bronx will all right a couple says. You rest and recover over all this.
She wasn’t sure anymore. Smolder said it would be ok but a leader never got a day off...

”I can’t do that... can I...?”
Smolder could understand the hesitation. After all, who ever heard of a leader taking a break? But he was sure he had heard of times where some of the other borough leaders went somewhere and put a newsie in charge in their stead while they were gone. It wasn’t necessarily for a ‘break’ but it would do for this situation. At least, that’s what he thought.
“I think you can... not forever, but for a short bit.” He added a bit reluctantly (though he was certainly willing for Sand’s sake), “I can take your place until you’re ready to come back.”

I think you can... not forever, but for a short bit.
Sand sat quietly. All the thoughts running through her head. What would the newsies think? What would the other leaders think? She couldn’t let it get the best of her. It already had though. Blondie leaving was like losing the part of herself that made her feel sane. He was always there. He was her best friend and she couldn’t understand him just leaving the way he did. He could of at least said goodbye...
I can take your place until you’re ready to come back.
“I can’t let ya do that...” she said looking up at him. “You got your stuff ya worry about....” He had a real job and a real life outside of this. Sand was always the one that pulled him back into this newsie mess. “I...I gotta do it...” Sand knew she did. It would just be hard breaking out of the habit of having Blondie to talk to. She had to do it on her own. This was a lesson she needed to learn apparently. You won’t always have people to help, so you’ll have to do it alone.

Smolder furrowed his brows some as Sand stayed silent. He could guess what she was thinking. He knew her well enough. Perhaps not as well as Blondie, but enough to know what was probably on her mind.
“Don’t worry what others’ll think,” he said a bit gruffly. “Take care of yourself before you even think about the rest.”
”I can’t let ya do that... You got your stuff ya worry about... I... I gotta do it...”
He frowned. “It ain’t much ta worry about. It’d only be for a short time....”
