"You think I want to suspect them? Suspect you?"
Lacey swallowed thickly. She knew that it was the truth, and that Spot hated having to suspect the people around him... but there was still a pang in her chest. "Do you suspect me?"
"I know my boids as well as any leader should, but I can't let this slide by. Someone could have, and it's my responsibility as leader to get to the bottom of this."
"Calm down," She murmured, "It's alright."
"It's a big problem if someone did. If I don't check, this could get out of hand for Bridges."
Lacey sighed. "Spot, you're still the leader right now. Don't worry about Bridges and his time as leader, he's learnin' from you. He's gonna be alright." Sure, it would be a hard adjustment to make, but Spot would make sure that he could make it. That much she was sure of.

"Do you suspect me?"
Oh great... he had let that slip. Of course, he didn't suspect Lacey, but that didn't mean he crossed her off the list from the get-go. He still had to ask.
"No," he answered gruffly. "But I still had to ask you."
"Calm down. It's alright."
He scowled, but he didn't give her a reply.
"Spot, you're still the leader right now. Don't worry about Bridges and his time as leader, he's learnin' from you. He's gonna be alright."
He huffed. "You just don't get it."
It was his responsibility to make sure it was a smooth transition for Bridges. He wasn't about to leave a mess for Bridges to clean up. This was a serious problem that he had to fix.

"No, but I still had to ask you."
Once again, Lacey was in no mood to argue. Instead, she simply brushed it off for now with a slight huff.
"You just don't get it."
She scoffed this time. "Then help me get it. Help me get it and let me help ya figure out who let it slip."

"Then help me get it. Help me get it and let me help ya figure out who let it slip."
Spot huffed again. "I'm sorry, but I can't. This is my duty." It would be nice to have help... "I don't want anybody gettin' mad at you for suspectin' them."
It would be bad if the boys got mad at Lacey. He would not hear the end of it inside the lodge. No, he unfortunately had to do this on his own.

"I'm sorry, but I can't. This is my duty."
Lacey frowned. "But..." She trailed off. What could she say?
"I don't want anybody gettin' mad at you for suspectin' them."
She ran her fingers through her hair, tightening the ribbon there that pulled her auburn locks back from her face. "Is that really the reason ya don't want my help?"

"But..."
Spot gave her a small smile to show he appreciated the offer.
"Is that really the reason ya don't want my help?"
His smile faded to a frown. "Really? You think I would lie about this?"
It felt like a slap to his face... it was like Lacey didn't need his protection every time he tried to offer it. He didn't want the boys talking bad about his girl or getting mad at his girl.

"Really? You think I would lie about this?"
Lacey sighed, "That ain't what I meant. You and I always do stuff together, what's changin'? Things don't feel the same between us lately and I don't like it."
Perhaps she was reading too much into it all, but it was tough to deal with such a thing. She couldn't help it when it felt like Spot might not want her around anymore, like he was trying to run away from her.

"That ain't what I meant."
"Well it sure felt that way," he muttered.
"You and I always do stuff together, what's changin'?"
Spot raised an eyebrow. What was changing? That was a good question... "We can't always do everything together when it comes to me bein' leader of Brooklyn."
It was true. It just never had been a real problem in the past. Nothing this problematic had caused them not to do it together.
"Things don't feel the same between us lately and I don't like it."
He sighed softly. Another truth... things just weren't the same the anymore. "I know... it ain't the same," he admitted."

"Well it sure felt that way."
Lacey closed her eyes tightly. "And I'm sorry. That's my fault."
"I don't want anybody gettin' mad at you for suspectin' them."
She swallowed thickly. It was true, yes, but he had always at least been willing to explain to her what was going on. Now she was being treated like some sort of random suspect when it came to who had spread around the news of the meeting. She didn't like it.
"I know... it ain't the same."
A lump formed in her throat. "What are we gonna do, Spot?" She whispered.

"And I'm sorry. That's my fault."
Spot decided not to comment. He was sure he would make things worse if he said something.
"What are we gonna do, Spot?"
He looked at her sadly. "I don't know."
There was so much he wanted to say, but couldn't find the words nor the will power to say. Right now, things would be at a standstill between the two of them until he had the courage to speak.

"I don't know."
The throbbing in her head intensified at his words, the lump in her throat growing and keeping her from saying anything in response. Instead, she forced back the tears that threatened to form in her eyes, and slowly nodded. It seemed as though things could be worse than she thought.

Spot could feel the atmosphere changing. Lacey was taking it hard... but what else could he say? He really didn't know what they were going to do anymore. Things were changing in ways neither of them had expected.
He cleared his throat. "I better get goin'."
There were still more birds to talk too.

"I better get goin'."
Lacey looked away, blinking a couple times and willing the cool air to keep her tears dried up. Finally nodding, she cleared her throat and left without another word. She really needed that walk now.

Spot stayed put as Lacey left quietly. There was a strange pang in his chest as he willed himself to move on. He didn't know it was going to hurt that much, but what was he to do? He couldn't lie and say that everything would be okay or that everything was fine. Nothing was fine right now...
