Sherlock hurried into the nicer side of Harlem. He didn't care for the area, too many snooty rich folk, but it was the quickest route to the border. He quickened his pace, not wanting to dawdle any more than necessary. Selling after school had taken a little longer than normal so he was running late. At least, it felt like he was. Time flew by too fast yet too slow on days like this. He hoped he wasn't making his brother wait for him. These sort of days didn't come often so he always did his best to sell fast. Unfortunately, he hadn't been able to sell never well today. People just weren't interested in the evening edition.
But no matter, he was going to see his brother.

Firecracker was carrying her left over papers not sure why she had got so many in the first place. She had never been though. Her brother was always the better one at this sort of thing. Firecracker sighed softly as she made her way through the richer end of Harlem. Then before she knew it someone had run into her and her papers went flying as she stumbled to keep from falling.

Sherlock tried to stop but it was too late. He winced as he collided into a red-haired girl and both of them fell backwards with a oof.
"I'm sorry," he quickly apologized as he gathered some of her fallen papers. He cocked his head slightly as their eyes met. He recognized her as one of the girls who sometimes sold in the evening. He didn't know her by name, but he definitely could recognize her face.

Im sorry
Firecracker sighed and scooped up her papers. "Just watch it next time." She sighed. "I can't believe this...today can't get worse..." She tried to straighten her papers. Firecracker grumbled, "Stupid Francis...I'll be down don't worry...make me come back up he'e and he disappears...."

"Just watch it next time."
Sherlock pursed his lips and nodded as he helped her pick up the last few papers. One was a little wrinkly so he straightened it as much as he could before handing it back.
"I can't believe this...today can't get worse..."
He bit his lip. "I'm sorry..."
He hadn't meant to bump into her. He hadn't been expecting someone to turn the corner just as he was. "Stupid Francis...I'll be down don't worry...make me come back up he'e and he disappears...."
Sherlock cocked his head slightly. There were no Francises in Harlem, and he would know! He always gave Mr. Atkins a hand with the log book and knew all the boys' real names at the lodge. "Francis?"

I'm sorry...
"It's fine..." she sighed softly. "Just been a day."
Francis?
Firecracker sighed frustrated. "My stupid brother...sent me out west then never showed and I can't find him." She vented her frustration. "Don't ya sell durin the day? What ya doin over here?"

"It's fine... Just been a day."
Sherlock nodded some in understanding. Who hadn't had one of those days?
"My stupid brother...sent me out west then never showed and I can't find him."
He pursed his lips. "Well, I know for sure he isn't in Harlem. None of the boys are named Francis. Might have better luck in the other boroughs."
"Don't ya sell durin the day? What ya doin over here?"
Sherlock made a face. "No, I go to school. I only sell evenings. And I'm just cutting through here to meet someone."

Well, I know for sure he isn't in Harlem. None of the boys are named Francis. Might have better luck in the other boroughs.
Firecracker sighed again. She was getting sick of looking around. So far all she'd found are kids that have no clue who her brother was. "Thanks...it's easier said then done ya know...? Thanks for lettin me know though." She said with a small smile.
No, I go to school. I only sell evenings. And I'm just cutting through here to meet someone.
"Ah! Right! I just see ya early in da mornin. I just figured ya sold cause that's what everyone does. Don't know a lot a people so easier ta say dey sell." She explained some. "So who ya meetin?" She asked being nosy and just generally glad to talk to someone that wasn't about finding her brother. She tended to talk a good amount because she liked knowing things and people.

"Thanks...it's easier said then done ya know...? Thanks for lettin me know though."
Sherlock nodded and shrugged a bit. "Francis isn't a real common name around here. Shouldn't be too hard."
"Ah! Right! I just see ya early in da mornin. I just figured ya sold cause that's what everyone does. Don't know a lot a people so easier ta say dey sell."
He smiled. "Well it's a pretty easy job. Morning is the best time to sell, but I got school so I have to sell in the evening." "So who ya meetin?"
He gave her a shy look. "Ah well... I'm meeting my big brother."
He never gave his brother's name because he knew it could get him into trouble and Rip would hate that.

"One would think..." she sighed. "Maybe he left..."
Well it's a pretty easy job. Morning is the best time to sell, but I got school so I have to sell in the evening
Firecracker nodded some. "Yeah I get it...schools important though so that's good..."
Ah well... I'm meeting my big brother.
"You got a big brother too? That's somethin!" Firecracker smiled. "At least ya got your brother."

"One would think... Maybe he left..."
Sherlock shrugged. That could be the case, but not necessarily. "Doesn't hurt to ask. Even if he did leave, someone who knew him could tell you when and where he left," he pointed out.
"Yeah I get it...schools important though so that's good..."
He grinned. "Yeah, that's what my brother said too."
"You got a big brother too? That's somethin! At least ya got your brother."
His grin widened. "It sure is." His smile faltered some. "Just stinks that he can't live in the same borough."

Firecracker nodded some. "Yeah I will ask but it'll take ages ta check everywhere..."
Yeah, that's what my brother said too.
"He sounds smart." She smiled a bit. "I didn't get ta go ta school."
It sure is. Just stinks that he can't live in the same borough
Firecracker nodded. "Yeah...I bet...I know it's hard for me..." she looked up and smiled. "Ya mind if I walk with ya?"

"Yeah I will ask but it'll take ages ta check everywhere..."
Sherlock smirked and shook his head. "Not if you have a little help. I have a few friends in other boroughs who might know a Francis."
"He sounds smart. I didn't get ta go ta school."
He nodded proudly. "He really is... he didn't get to go to school either."
"Yeah...I bet...I know it's hard for me... Ya mind if I walk with ya?"
Sherlock pursed his lips some before nodding. "Sure, I don't mind. I'm just walking to the border."

Firecracker smiled a bit kind of shocked. "You'd do that...?" She asked softly.
He really is... he didn't get to go to school either
"But he's probably smart. Keepin ya in school and all." She smiled a bit. "I just gotta work on a ranch." Firecracker said with a smile.
Sure, I don't mind. I'm just walking to the border.
Firecracker smiled brighter. "Thanks! It's nice ta talk ta people about stuff other then my brother. My name's Firecracker by the way. It's nice ta meet ya. So why ya gotta meet ya brother at the border?" She asked in a whirl of words.

Sherlock nodded. "Be glad to help. Besides," he added sheepishly. "I didn't exactly help make your day better."
"But he's probably smart. Keepin ya in school and all."
He nodded once more. "Yeah, he's really really smart!"
"I just gotta work on a ranch."
He whistled low. "That's still pretty impressive!"
"Thanks! It's nice ta talk ta people about stuff other then my brother. My name's Firecracker by the way. It's nice ta meet ya. So why ya gotta meet ya brother at the border?"
He grinned. "No problem. And name's Sherlock." He stuck out his hand for her to shake. "And well... I have to meet him at the border cuz his borough is too dangerous for me to go into. That's why I live in Harlem."

"Thank ya really. It means a lot..." she smiled at him happily.
Yeah, he's really really smart!
Firecracker smiled. "Can I meet him?" She asked with a smile.
No problem. And name's Sherlock. And well... I have to meet him at the border cuz his borough is too dangerous for me to go into. That's why I live in Harlem.
She shook his hand and smiled. "Good ta meet ya." She cocked her head to the side. "Where he live? I ain't to good at directions here where I was gone so long."

"Thank ya really. It means a lot..."
Sherlock grinned. "Well like I said, happy to help."
"Can I meet him?"
He pursed his lips before nodding slowly. He didn't see any harm in letting her meet his brother. Might be good for Rip anyways. "Sure, why not?"
"Where he live? I ain't to good at directions here where I was gone so long."
Sherlock was grinning again. "He lives in Queens. But it's okay. Directions can be a bit tricky with all the building going in around here lately.

Well like I said, happy to help.[/i
She smiled happily. Maybe she could find her brother after all. With help it won't take her as long and if he left to go find her well then she'd have to stay put. Either way having a friend would help her.
Sure, why not?
"Great!" Firecracker said excitedly. Two possible friends in one day! This was starting to look like it might be a good day!
He lives in Queens. But it's okay. Directions can be a bit tricky with all the building going in around here lately.
"Queens huh?" She said looking at him. Hadn't she heard something about Queens? "I've gotten ta where I'm better at direction where there are less buildings. Bein on a ranch I got good at some stuff."

"Great!"
Sherlock was grinning. Seeing her excited made him glad he decided to let her meet Rip.
"Queens huh? I've gotten ta where I'm better at direction where there are less buildings. Bein on a ranch I got good at some stuff."
He nodded. "Mhmm. It's kinda rougher over there so my brother doesn't like me going there. And no worries," he assured. "Once we get closer ta the border, there isn't a lot of buildings."

Firecracker smiled. "Great! So how far away are we? And if ya want me ta leave any time just let me know. I wouldn't want some person I just met hog up all the time with my brother." She smiled encouragingly. "Is there anything good in Queens? Like fun things ta do? Or does everyone just go ta the bigger bouroughs?" Firecracker was spouting off questions hardly realizing she was going a mile a minute with them and not leaving time to answer. She had been keeping to herself since she got back but having a person to talk to was opening the floodgates for her.

"Great! So how far away are we?"
"Well, we're not too-" he began when she started talking again.
"And if ya want me ta leave any time just let me know. I wouldn't want some person I just met hog up all the time with my brother. Is there anything good in Queens? Like fun things ta do? Or does everyone just go ta the bigger bouroughs?"
Every time Sherlock opened his mouth to answer, Firecracker shot another question at him. She fired away causing a smile to tug at his lips. She sure had a fiery spirit. He admired it greatly.
"One question at a time," he teased lightly, eyes sparkling with mischief. "As for anything good ta do in Queens, I don't really know. I haven't lived there since I was like four." He shrugged some. "My brother doesn't really like me going over so I don't get ta go into the actual borough very much. I do know they have a really big library!" He grinned at the thought. It was the only place Rip ever let him go to in their home borough. "Queens is one of the biggest boroughs," he said, obviously proud and attached to the borough he was originally born. "But most newsies prefer hanging out in Manhattan. Medda's got a joint there and always treats newsies well. Jack Kelly's her favorite so if you can get close ta him you can get in better with Medda." He was rambling just a little. He loved sharing observations he made. "Brooklyn is also another big place to go. There's Sheephead and the fairgrounds. Can't tell you much about Brooklyn other than what I've heard though. My brother doesn't like me going there either. Says Spot ain't nothing but trouble."

One question at a time,
"Sorry...I have talked ta anyone just ta talk in a while..." she explained blushing from embarrassment.
As for anything good ta do in Queens, I don't really know. I haven't lived there since I was like four. My brother doesn't really like me going over so I don't get ta go into the actual borough very much. I do know they have a really big library! Queens is one of the biggest boroughs,
Firecracker looked up as he said library. She wasn't a bit fan of book mostly cause she had a hard time reading things that long. Maybe she could practice there? She smiled hearing how proud he sounded. "I wish it was safer so we could go ova sometime." Firecracker said looking at where they were going.
But most newsies prefer hanging out in Manhattan. Medda's got a joint there and always treats newsies well. Jack Kelly's her favorite so if you can get close ta him you can get in better with Medda.
"Jack Kelly? I'll keep it in mind...maybe we could go together sometime?" She asked cautiously looking over at him. Firecracker did want to go to such a big place alone. Especially when she could easily get turned around in the city. She had heard some not so nice things about the city at night...
Brooklyn is also another big place to go. There's Sheephead and the fairgrounds. Can't tell you much about Brooklyn other than what I've heard though. My brother doesn't like me going there either. Says Spot ain't nothing but trouble.
Firecracker made a face. "Well so ya brother doesn't want ya ta go. Ya can't decide if anyone's trouble till ya meet 'em." Firecracker flashed a bright smile at him. "Let's go to the fairgrounds and see what's there. I don't think I've eva been." She smiled at him hoping somehow he might say yes.

"Sorry...I have talked ta anyone just ta talk in a while..."
Sherlock chuckled softly. "It's okay. Just take a moment to breathe, okay?"
"I wish it was safer so we could go ova sometime."
He nodded. "My brother sometimes lets me go to the library if it's a good day, but that doesn't happen a lot. It would be nice if it was always safe."
"Jack Kelly? I'll keep it in mind...maybe we could go together sometime?"
He was grinning again. "Sure I don't mind. I like going to Medda's when I'm not busy."
"Well so ya brother doesn't want ya ta go. Ya can't decide if anyone's trouble till ya meet 'em."
He nodded slowly. He could see the logic in that, but he trusted his brother's judgement too. Well, he was older now, perhaps Rip wouldn't mind if he went out on his own? It wasn't like Brooklyn was as dangerous as Queens anyways.
"Let's go to the fairgrounds and see what's there. I don't think I've eva been."
His eyes twinkled mischievously. What Rip didn't know wouldn't hurt him. Besides, it sounded like a lot of fun!
He nodded eagerly. "Yeah! We should go."

"That's fun! Is it fun?" She asked happily.
Sure I don't mind. I like going to Medda's when I'm not busy.
"Great! We should go sometime!" Firecracker said excitedly.
Yeah! We should go.
Firecracker smile and had a little bounce in her step as they walked along. "It'll be so much fun! I dont even remember what it looks like! I can't wait!" She smiled. And maybe she could look for her brother while they were over there.

"Good idea," he winked.
"That's fun! Is it fun?"
"Lots!" Sherlock assured. "They have the best books in Queens."
"Great! We should go sometime!"
He grinned. "Well let me know when you wanna go and we can go."
"It'll be so much fun! I dont even remember what it looks like! I can't wait!"
He nodded eagerly. "Yeah, I've never been but I've heard they all sorts of fun rides and games." He chuckled softly. "And lots of food and candy!"
