The day had not gone the way that Lacey had planned. She had been expecting things to go well with selling, especially since she had gone into the day with a good amount of sleep behind her, and a bit of extra food. However, of course, things had not gone as well as she had hoped.
She had been distracted the whole day. She had a lot on her mind, and Lacey had never been one to multitask well. She had struggled through selling all of her papes, and had been out later than usual because of it. Afterwards, instead of heading back to the lodging houses, she had decided to relax at the docks for a while.
Her legs dangling over the edge, the female toyed with her long auburn locks, humming slightly to herself as she gazed out at the silent waters. Hopefully, things would begin to look up tomorrow.

Cloud had what he felt was a long day. Spot, once again, had left him in charge of Brooklyn. The guy had been putting leadership in his hands quite often as of late. He seemed to be visiting Staten a lot... but it wasn't exactly Cloud's business to ask. So he didn't. He just did as Spot requested and made sure Brooklyn ran smoothly.
Easier said than done! The boys never cared for Cloud that much, and as leader? Ha! They really weren't thrilled with that. Not like they had much of a say in the matter. They listened to him (after all Mr. O'Quinns was watching...), but they didn't mean they had to like it! They grumbled and talked behind Cloud's back. And when he was busy daydreaming, they would have their fun.
So it had been quite a long rough day for him. He had a split lip to prove it too! He really wished Spot could find someone else to be leader so to speak. He just wasn't cut out for that sort of job. He was a much better bird.
Right now, he just needed a break from the boys, and the docks were certainly the perfect place to get away. However, it seemed he wasn't the only one who had that idea.
"Oh... hi, Lacey," he greeted a bit shyly.

Lacey hadn't processed the sound of footsteps approaching at first. She, much like Cloud, had been lost in thought, staring out at the water with a blank expression on her face. When the blue eyed boy spoke up, she jumped a bit, turning to confront whoever had approached her. Once she realized that it was Cloud, however, she relaxed.
"Oh, hey, Cloud." She cleared her throat, her muscles slowly untensing. She hadn't been expecting anyone else to come to the docks that late in the day, but she wasn't complaining. She had always found Cloud to be good company, and there was no denying that he was a good bird.
"Ya gonna come sit?" She gestured beside her, patting the empty spot. She figured that Cloud deserved a bit of a break after having been left in charge of Brooklyn again for the day. People didn't seem to respect him in that sense like they did with Spot, although Spot had been gone quite often lately. Lacey had a sinking feeling that she was part of the reason why. She hadn't meant for things to turn out the way that they had. But there was nothing she could do about that anymore.
[Just a heads up, I had surgery yesterday, and the pain meds make it kinda hard for me to stare at a screen for very long, or stay awake. My replies will happen, but they may not be perfect, and they may take a bit xx]

"Oh, hey, Cloud."Cloud gave her a small smile not wanting to seem unfriendly and not wanting to hurt his lip further. "Hey..." "Ya gonna come sit?"He blinked a little in surprise. He had kind of drifted off for a moment. He gave her a sheepish look. "If you don't mind..." He sat down after she gestured that it was okay to sit. It was nice to know there were a few newsies out there besides Spot who respected him. "Long day, huh?" he commented quietly. He knew the days had probably been tough for her as well. Summers were pretty hard on the newsies especially hot ones like today. Plus tensions were always high during the summer. Fights often broke out due to the heat. People just were so grumpy when it got hot. Not to mention the other boroughs tended to get crankier in the heat as well. It would be. A prime opportunity to strike. Spot wasn't here... so Queens would have a good shot at taking over Brooklyn's territory. ((Awww, I hope your surgery went well. I know pain mess can do that so don't feel bad. Just glad to have you back on the forum! ))

"If you don't mind..."
The female rolled her eyes playfully. "Ya look like you could use a break." The smaller bird didn't appear to be in the best of shape. He seemed slightly discombobulated, and his lip was split. Surely Spot would find out what had caused it and take care of it when he returned.
"Long day, huh?"
Lacey had to hold back a scoff. "That don't even begin to describe it..." Things had gone wrong in every way possible, and they had been for a long time now. Everything that she had thought that she knew had come crumbling down right before her eyes, and she wasn't doing very well when it came to coping. She had been talked to by some of the other newsies about it every now and then, but she didn't really feel comfortable discussing her problems with just anyone. Normally, she would talk to Spot, but she didn't even assume he wanted to talk to her anymore. That was the main problem.
"What happened ta you?" She asked, slightly eager to draw the attention away from herself once more.
[It went very well, thank you! I'm glad to be back.]

"Ya look like you could use a break."Cloud nodded. "Yeah..." He gave her another sheepish look. "That obvious, huh?" "That don't even begin to describe it..."He sighed, kicking lightly at the water below. "Yeah... it's been more than a long day. More like a rough week." Spot had been in and out the past couple of days. Not everyone was really thrilled with that, but with things being as tense as they were with the other boroughs, eh you couldn't blame Spot. No one knew exactly why he was going out, not even Cloud, but they had their guesses. Newsies from other boroughs had been coming into Brooklyn quite often to cool off by swimming. Spot had to make sure the other boroughs weren't planning any mischief. "What happened ta you?"Cloud blinked. He had lost focus again! "Ah..." He licked his lips, wincing as his tongue ran over the cut. "Oh... just um you know, the boys roughin' it out. Nothin' really." He hoped his other bruises weren't that obvious. Spot would be so mad when he got back... Mad at Cloud for not defending and standing up for himself and mad at the boys for not respecting Cloud like they should. Ugh... it never ended well when Spot came back to a beat up Cloud. "Is it bad?" he asked, voice filled with worry. ((That's great! I wish you a speedy recovery. ))

"That obvious, huh?"
Lacey shrugged. It wasn't that Cloud looked terrible, he just looked exhausted. She wasn't sure that she cohld blame him, though. The lack of respect from the others in Brooklyn had to take a lot out of the small boy from time to time.
"Yeah... it's been more than a long day. More like a rough week."
"You're tellin' me..." She sighed, turning her attention back to the water once more. Summertime has always been some of the happiest months for her, considering she could sell and then come down to the docks for a cool down if she needed to. Now, nothing was nearly as fun as it had been before.
"Oh... just um you know, the boys roughin' it out. Nothin' really. Is it bad?"
Lacey wasn't sure whether or not she should believe Cloud that nothing was wrong, but she frowned at the sudden worry that settled into the boy's voice. "Nah, it ain't that bad... just some bruising here and there, plus your lip. But are ya sure you're okay? I'm not thinkin' Spot would want to know the boys were soakin' ya, even if it wasn't too bad." She pointed out.
[Thank you!]

"You're tellin' me..."Cloud pursed his lips, despite the light sting it gave him. "You been doin' okay?" It really wasn't much of a question. He could tell she was having a rough week like him. She didn't quite seem her cheerful self. It was more like an opening for her to talk about it only if she desired to do so. He was no Spot, but he was a listening ear. "Nah, it ain't that bad..."He sighed in relief. "Good, good." If it looked bad, the boys would have hell to pay from Spot, and sooner or later it would return back to him. It was an almost endless cycle at times. He wished he was a little bolder. Maybe then he'd finally tell Spot not to put him in charge! "Just some bruising here and there, plus your lip."Cloud gently touched his bruises. "As long as the bruises aren't bad," he mused to himself. "But are ya sure you're okay? I'm not thinkin' spot would want to know the boys were soakin' ya, even if it wasn't too bad."He looked at her with wide eyes before quickly nodding. "I'm okay, really! Last thing I need is Spot sayin' somethin'..." he stumbled a bit with his words. "I didn't say anythin' about soakin'... the boys are always rough-housing as Mr. O'Quinns likes ta say. I mean really, it isn't nothin' to worry about." He was beginning to ramble a bit. He had a habit of doing that when he was overly nervous or trying to cover something up. He could lie when he was in action as a bird, but outside of that? He really was a horrible liar. ((You're very welcome! ))

"You been doin' okay?"
The question caught Lacey a bit off guard. She swallowed thickly, her gaze dropping to her lap as a lump formed in her throat. "Yeah... just missin' Spot."
Of course, it wasn't really a secret anymore, but Lacey did definitely miss Spot's company. The leader was a good leader, and not having him around felt strange. Plus, their last interaction had been less than ideal. She just had really come to care about him, and she had messed it all up.
"I'm okay, really! Last thing I need is Spot sayin' somethin'..."
Lacey frowned. She knew that Cloud was tough and could handle himself, but that didn't mean that she didn't worry about him.
"I didn't say anythin' about soakin'... the boys are always rough-housing as Mr. O'Quinns likes ta say. I mean really, it isn't nothin' to worry about."
Lacey nodded slowly, although Cloud was a terrible liar. She definitely worried about him from time to time; she didn't want anything serious happening to him, especially since he was Spot's second in command. Even though he wasn't the typical choice, he was good at what he did, and Lacey didn't like seeing him hurt. "Relax, Cloud... I ain't gonna rat ya out..."

"Yeah... just missin' Spot."
Cloud nodded in understanding. "I think we all miss him... in our own way."
He missed Spot as a leader and friend. The other boys probably missed him as leader and friend too. The girls? He wasn't so sure how they missed him, but he was sure they missed him too.
"Relax, Cloud... I ain't gonna rat ya out..."
Cloud let out a long sigh. "Sorry... I was ramblin', wasn't I? It's just..." he sighed again but in frustration. "It's bad when Spot comes back an' I've been soaked or something. It just makes things bad. The guys are okay with me bein' a boid even if they don't care for me that much... but when Spot puts me in charge?" He just shook his head. "And it's Spot... I can't tell him no, can I?"
He turned to Lacey somewhat curiously. He wondered if she had anything to say about that.

"I think we all miss him... in our own way."
Lacey nodded slowly, letting out a soft sigh. That was as good a way of putting it as Lacey had heard. Most of the other girls were just complaining about Spot not being there for the sake of missing eye candy... but Lacey missed his company.
"Yeah... he's real special."
"Sorry... I was ramblin', wasn't I? Its just... It's bad when Spot comes back an' I've been soaked or something. It just makes things bad. The guys are okay with me bein' a boid even if they don't care for me that much... but when Spot puts me in charge? And it's Spot... I can't tell him no, can I?"
Lacey bit her lip, pausing for a few moments to process what Cloud was saying. "You could tell him that ya didn't like bein' in charge. I'm sure that he'd understand if ya explained it to him. He's not a bad person or anythin'." She cleared her throat. "I think... you've just gotta be vocal sometimes."

"Yeah... he's real special."
Cloud had to smile at that. "Yeah... he really is something."
After all, no one had ever controlled Brooklyn as well as Spot did. He had a charm about him. And an aura. Despite his size, he was a force to be reckoned with, even the coppers didn't like messing around with him.
"You could tell him that ya didn't like bein' in charge."
Cloud sighed. He was afraid she'd say that. "I... I don't know about that. It's Spot we're talking about."
"I'm sure he'd understand if ya explained it to him."
"You think so?" he asked doubtfully. He wasn't sure if he had it in him to even try to explain. And if he did, would Spot really understand?
"He's not a bad person or anythin'. I think... you've just gotta be vocal sometimes."
Cloud nodded slowly. "Yeah... he ain't. I just don't know if I could be vocal," he admitted. "But, but I could try."
Trying never hurt anyone, right? He'd take Lacey's advice. Spot couldn't do anything that would hurt him if he wanted Cloud to stay as a bird.
"I'll try," he whispered in attempt to encourage himself.
