”Together is the only convincing that I need.”
Her soft tone was comforting and calming. He had no idea why he had been so nervous before.
”Together sounds perfect.”
Spot cleared his throat a bit. “Yeah... perfect.”
He had never realized how alone he had been until now. Sure he had his brothers and such but they were across in Staten. Oh, there was Cloud too, but he really wasn’t that close to his bird. He had been alone for quite some time. It had taken some time spent with Lacey to make him realize that. Well, it took talking to Thunder and Jack to make him fully realize things. And now, he didn’t think he wanted to go back to the way things were.
“Together...” He took her hand and let their fingers intertwine. “I like that.”

“Yeah... perfect.”
Lacey had never really thought that she would care all that much when someone came into her life and made her feel that way. She figured that caring deeply about someone was just something that she would barely even notice, although she had come to realize that it was much more intense to think about and feel than she had ever been able to think of before. It was special, and she loved it, but she could always tell that it was there. It wasn't just some quiet thing in the back of her mind all the time.
“Together... I like that.”
The feeling of holding hands with Spot, their fingers intertwined, was enough for Lacey to know that she wasn't going to be able to stop smiling for days. It was like she was bursting with happiness, staring down at their hands and suddenly feeling much less lonely in the world.
"I can honestly say this isn't what I thought we were going to be talking about..." She giggled softly, gently squeezing Spot's hand.

”I can honestly say this isn’t what I thought we were going to be talking about...”
Spot smiled softly and squeezed back. It was oddly nice. He could get used to this. He looked at her curiously. “What did you think we were going to talk about?”
It would be interesting to hear what her thoughts had been before she knew that they would be dating. A way to sort of get to know Lacey in a new way.

“What did you think we were going to talk about?”
Lacey nearly laughed. Of course, she hadn't been expecting things to go nearly as well between them as it had, and she wasn't complaining now.
"Really, I, uh... I thought ya were gonna tell me I wasn't a bird anymore or somethin'. I wasn't really sure, but somethin' awful..." She hated that she had thought badly of Spot when he had just wanted to do something nice, especially when everything had turned out so well, but it was the truth. She had been terrified that she was going to lose him, and instead, she had gotten the opposite. She couldn't have been happier about that. "I think it made me much happier about the way things really did go, though."

”Really, I, uh... I thought ya were gonna tell me I wasn’t a bird anymore or somethin’.”
Spot raised an eyebrow. But he supposed he couldn’t really blame her for jumping to conclusions... he was guilty of that even more so as leader of Brooklyn. It had got him into trouble in his earlier years as leader. He had only begun to gain full authority and respect not too long before the strike.
”I wasn’t really sure, but somethin’ awful...”
He pursed his lips. “Yeah... but we all kinda jump ta conclusions every now and then.”
”I think it made me much happier about the way things really did go, though.”
He smirked slightly. “Heh, glad to hear that.”

“Yeah... but we all kinda jump ta conclusions every now and then.”
Lacey blushed, "Yeah, I guess this was just one of those times. But I'm glad I was wrong. Really." She couldn't imagine how she would have reacted to bad news from Spot - especially not now that she had received the good news that she had. Having that taken away now would have been incredibly cruel.
“Heh, glad to hear that.”
"Me too." She grinned. The day had definitely ended much better than it had begun.

”Yeah, I guess this was just one of those times. But I’m glad I was wrong. Really.”
He nodded. “Yeah... let’s hope it wont be something that happens often, huh?” he teased her lightly as he nudged her.
”Me too.”
Spot grinned back and seemed to be about to say something when the clock chimed. His eyes widened slightly in surprise. Time seemed to have flown by.

“Yeah... let’s hope it wont be something that happens often, huh?”
Lacey giggled. "I don't think that that's gonna be a problem."
When the clock chimed, there was a moment where Lacey didn't really process it. However, she knew that it was later than she had thought. Chewing gently on her bottom lip, she reluctantly rose to her feet. "I guess that's our cue ta part ways, huh?"

”I don’t think that that’s gonna be a problem.”
Spot smirked. “Good. Would hate for that ta be a problem for us.”
”I guess that’s our cue ta part ways, huh?”
He slowly stood up beside Lacey, reluctantly taking his hand away from hers. “Yeah...” He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “It’s later than I thought,” he admitted. “I got rounds ta do and stuff...”

“Good. Would hate for that ta be a problem for us.”
"I'd hate for anythin' ta be a problem for us." Of course, that wasn't really possible, but for the beginning of a relationship... Lacey was just determined to do better than she had seen a lot of the girls do before her.
“Yeah... It’s later than I thought, I got rounds ta do and stuff...”
Lacey bit her lip, "Yeah... Bein' leader comes with stuff like that. Don't worry about that." Of course, it was sad to know that her time with Spot was over for the night... But something told her that there would be plenty more time for the pair of them to spend together in the days ahead.
"I'll, uh, see ya tamorrow?" She grinned crookedly.

”I’d hate for anythin’ ta be a problem for us.”
Spot’s cheeks flushed a little. “Y-yeah... I’d hate that too.”
”Yeah... Bein’ leader comes with stuff like that. Don’t worry about that.”
He made a slight face. “I try not ta, but it ain’t easy ya know.” He sighed a bit. “With everything that is goin’ on, I just hope it’ll be a quiet winter.”
It was always the hardest part of the year. There was no need for borough wars to happen to make things more miserable than they already were.
”I’ll, uh, see ya tomorrow?”
He chuckled softly. “I sure hope so.”

“Y-yeah... I’d hate that too.”
Lacey blushed faintly.
“I try not ta, but it ain’t easy ya know. With everything that is goin’ on, I just hope it’ll be a quiet winter.”
Winter was always the toughest months of the year. It got so cold that a bunch of the newsies got sick, it was miserable to try selling, and less people were willing to stop and buy papes. Nothing was easy during the winter.
"I second that." She agreed quickly.
“I sure hope so.”
Lacey bit her lip, hesitating for a few moments in silence before abruptly embracing Spot. It lasted no more than a couple of seconds before she pulled back, her cheeks bright red and her gaze locked on the ground as she cleared her throat awkwardly. "Stay safe out there."

”I second that.”
Spot nodded a bit more seriously. “So you need ta be careful and stay warmly dressed,” he warned.
He would hate for Lacey to get sick at this time of year. It was bad enough when Cloud got sick... He didn’t want something to happen to Lacey. Winters got rougher every year. He needed to check up on his boys and make sure they didn’t stay out late now that it got darker earlier and got so much colder during the night.
”Stay safe out there.”
His eyes widened in surprise as Lacey suddenly hugged him. He found himself awkwardly returning the hug, brief though it was.
“Um... yeah,” he stuttered. “I um do my best.”

“So you need ta be careful and stay warmly dressed.”
Lacey couldn't help but smile the moment that Spot began to fuss over her. "I'll be fine. I promise. I'm more worried about you, with all the time ya spend outside durin' the winter making sure no one else is doin' anythin' dumb."
Of course, she understood that it was Spot's job, but he was definitely more likely to get sick than she was in that regard.
“Um... yeah, I um do my best.”
Lacey's blush only deepened, "I, uh, I'm sorry. I just..." She trailed off, not really knowing where she had been going with it. "Sorry. My bad."

Spot pursed his lips and shrugged. “No need ta worry about me,” he assured her. “I’m healthy and dress warm.”
”I, uh, I’m sorry. I just...”
“It’s fine,” he said quietly, not wanting things to be awkward between them. It was going to take awhile though. They would dance around until they got comfortable.
”Sorry. My bad.”
Spot cleared his throat. “No need ta apologize. I... I appreciate it. The hug, I mean.”

“No need ta worry about me, I’m healthy and dress warm.”
Lacey cracked a smile, "Good. Make sure ya keep it that way." It wouldn't be a problem, she knew - everyone would typically help the others out when it came to lending each other extra jackets or scarves or anything. Spot would be fine. She just couldn't help but worry.
“It’s fine. No need ta apologize."
This was certainly something that would take some time to try to get used to. Lacey did her best just to bite her lip and nod.
"I... I appreciate it. The hug, I mean.”
Then came the blush. "Oh, uh... That's good. I'm glad." Of course, it would take her a bit of time to settle into things. New things were always confusing, and she tended to just sort of fumble around until things worked themselves out. It would take time, but it would be worth it once the first stage was done.

Spot cracked a small smile. “I will. I promise.”
”Oh, uh... That’s good. I’m glad.”
He chuckled softly. It was confusing, yes, but it was a good kind of confusing for once. It would just take some time. It was a pity that the clock was chiming once more. Time flew by way too fast.
“Until we see again.”

“I will. I promise.”
Lacey smiled. "That's all I'm askin'."
"Until we see again."
Nodding slowly, Lacey began chewing on her bottom lip. "I'll see ya tamorrow, Spot." It was sad to say goodbye, but there was always the next day... And Lacey had a newfound confidence about her that could help her with selling.
