After a long day of selling, Pepper was more than ready to call it quits and just take it easy. So, that was why she had decided to pop inside the Solomona and Hart Bookstore. Not many newsies came there, and not many fancy people went there either so it was a perfect place to go to enjoy some peace and quiet. Perhaps, she could find a good book to read around here as well. There were so many choices after all.
She browsed different sections before settling on a classic Pride and Prejudice.

Tumbler walked into the store, blowing into his hands. "oh oh." he shivered. "*it's butt numbin' cold* out there." he continued. "does anyone know where the grammar books are?" he asked maybe a little to loud.
*english slang for freezing cold weather.

Pepper had just settled herself in a chair by the window when the bell rang, signaling that another customer had entered the store. She ignored it however. She just wanted to enjoy this new book. If it was good, she might consider buying it with her extra money.
She had barely read the first chapter when a young boy asked a question rather loudly. She sighed and looked up, surprised to see one of the younger boy newsies inside the shop. She hadn’t thought the boys were ones for reading.
“I think the grammar books are towards the back,” she replied before returning to her reading.

“I think the grammar books are towards the back,”
that was a girl, Tumbler took of his cap, bowed his head, and quickly made his way to the back. after finding some book that looked to be usefull, he settled down at a small table so he could take notes (books were way to pricey for him anyway.) after a short while. he had enough of it for one day. after finding a book called nobody's boy. he settled down.
"that book you're readin', is that anythin' good?" he hesitated for a second.
"Salt wasn't it?"
why didn't he know this girls name? then again he couldn't remember most of the girls names. he was out selling with Skittery most of the time.

Pepper gave the younger boy a small smile and nod. She was eager to get back to her book. Nothing exciting had happened yet, but th characters were fascinating enough to urge her to continue reading.
She was surprised when the boy spoke to her again. She glanced up from her book momentarily to answer his question. “Can’t say. I’ve only read the first chapter.” It was hard to judge a book on just one chapter in her opinion. Perhaps after the third or fourth chapter she could say for sure. But one thing she did know, this probably would not be a book a boy would be interested.
Pepper was back to reading when the boy asked another question. She couldn’t help but sigh. Maybe this was a sign for her to just buy the book and read it back at the girls’ lodge at a later time. If she didn’t like the book, she was sure she could sell it to one of the other girls or even to the library. Or perhaps... this store would let her return it?
“It’s Pepper,”she said a bit sharply, her fiery tongue had been awoken. She closed her book. “And you are?”
She hadn’t meant to be so cross with him. It just came out that way at times. That was why she got into so much trouble at the lodge at times. Her fiery attitude was a bit of a problem. She needed to work on it, but it was just so hard not to spit out what she felt like saying.

"wow lady, no need to bite me head of." he smiled, holding his hand up in mock surrender. "ise Tumbler" he said with a small but genuine smile. "you'se have quite the temper, is that how you'se gots yer name?"

Pepper winced slightly as the younger newsie pointed out her temper. She really had been trying to keep it in check, but she just slipped sometimes...
"Sorry," she mumbled.
She cocked her head slightly as the boy introduced himself. The name rang a bell, but she couldn't quite place why. She didn't really know the younger newsies that well.
Pepper sucked in her cheeks some as he directly commented on her temper problem. She had to bite her tongue to keep from saying something sharp once more. She wasn't going to slip up this time! If she wanted stop losing her cool, she had to nip in the bud!
"Sort of," she shrugged. "Some call me that for my temper. Others for my hair or freckles."
