Pepper nodded. "Yeah... I was thinkin' that too. It would be nice, but it's a lot of work."
She sighed. "An' well, it's hard enough tryin' ta sell on some days. If I sold twice, I probably would just end up eatin' all my papes." She cracked a small smile. "That wouldn't be much good, huh?"

Crutchie nods, mouth squinching to one side. "Yeah, that definitely wouldn't be good..." He walks along, looking down.

Pepper gave him a small smile. "Yeah, but 'nuff talking all sad-like. Today's a good day." She gestured at her empty hands. "I finished sellin' all my papes."
She was usually pretty consistent in selling, but some days were rough and she wouldn't be able to sell those last four or five papers no matter how hard she tried. So that definitely made today a good day.

Crutchy nods, smiling and keeping up with her. "It's good ya sold all your papes, Pepper." He stops, balancing on one leg for a moment before transferring his crutch to his other hand to roll out his shoulder for a second.

Pepper just grinned. "Yeah, it's not somethin' that happens every day." She paused as Crutchy stopped to transfer his crutch.
"You think a lot of people sell in the evenin'?" She knew almost all the newsies sold the morning. It suddenly struck her that they might have some competition selling the evening.

Crutchy puts his crutch back under his arm and continues walking. "I dunno about a lot of people... I think Jack said somethin' about doin' the evenin' papes, but I don't know if he went through wit' it... Race goes and gets more cigars, so he don' sell... Might be some of the other kids in the lodge house?..." He shrugs.

Pepper nodded a bit. "That don't sound too bad then." She felt relieved. It didn't sound like too many people sold in the evening.
"We should be fine ta sell." She grinned.

"I think I might jus' watch one of 'em from a distance for now... Watch a couple of their tracks before headin' to the lodge." He pauses, humming. "Gotta get somethin' ta eat, too..."

Pepper nodded a bit in agreement. "Yeah... probably not the best idea to jus' jump in on something new."
She stuffed her hands in her pockets. "We have a lot of time anyways. I don't think the evening starts sellin' for another hour." She looked up at the sky squinting. "The sun's still high so it's still early."

"Yeah, yer right..." He pauses for a moment. "Well, since we're togetha... wanna go t' Tibby's with me for a quick bite before shadowin' some of the guys?" He gives a half-smile, fidgeting with his bag.

Pepper smiled shyly and nodded. "That sounds good ta me. I haven't eaten all day."
It would be nice to grab something to eat before selling, and well, it was really sweet of Crutch to offer. It wasn't every day that she got to eat with another newsie.

Crutchy's eyebrows furrow in concern. "Ya haven't eaten all day?" He couldn't think of going to work without some sort of food, whether it's just an apple or a sandwich, if his earnings were good the night before.

Pepper nodded absentmindedly. "I missed breakfast this mornin' and kinda forgot about lunch."
She had a bad habit of forgetting about lunch. Dinner was something easily remembered. But somehow lunch was almost always forgotten in the hustle and bustle of the day.
"I usually get breakfast, but I woke up late," she explained noting the worry on Crutchy's face.

Crutchy nods, chewing the inside of his lip. "I usually forget lunch, too..." He fiddles with his bag. "I'm sorry ya woke up late... Let's go head t' Tibby's, alright?" He smiles at her, looking up at the sun again. "Like ya said, we got time."

Pepper shrugged. "It was my fault for stayin' up so late." She giggled. "Ms. Campbell will be so mad that I used her last candles last night."
She nodded as the two headed toward Tibby's. "Sounds good ta me," she agreed. "We have plenty of time."
She was grinning as they made their way out of the park. She was excited about eating dinner and trying to sell the evening edition.

"Why'd ya stay up so late anyway?" Crutchy gives a concerned smile. "Trouble sleepin' or somethin'?" He used to have problems sleeping. When he was younger, the muscular condition in his right leg caused it to cramp a lot. Now that he's stopped growing, it doesn't give him problems anymore, but he still knows the tricks he used to get him to sleep.

Pepper just gave him a sheepish smile. "I was readin' a book. I couldn't put it down."
She loved reading, and Ms. Campbell was always scolding her for leaving wax stains on the sheets from late night reading.
"It's a bad habit of mine."

Pepper grinned, happy to have someone who didn't laugh at her for her reading habits. "It really is," she agreed cheerfully.

Crutchy smiles. He usually didn't have time to read things he wanted to (Mostly since he was busy whittling or selling papes), but a good book is always a good way to settle down and relax. "What book are ya readin'?"

"Was," Pepper corrected before giving Crutchy a sheepish grin. "I finished it already. I can't remember the title though. It was about pirates and a treasure." She furrowed her brows thoughtfully. "I wish I could remember the title. All I can remember is the author's name," she admitted. "Mark Twain. Have you ever read his books?" she asked curiously.

He nods. "Yeah, I've read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, and The Prince and the Pauper." He smiles. "That one was one of my favorites."

Pepper’s eyes lit up. “Oooo those are good ones. I have an old copy of Tom Sawyer hidden under the floorboard under my bunk.”
It wasn’t that she suspected any of the other girls to steal her stuff, but books were hard to come by so you had to keep your stuff safe somehow.
“I’m tryin’ to save money to get a better copy... mine is so worn from reading it so much.” She grinned sheepishly. “And I kinda got a couple of candle wax stains on it from reading at night.”
((Soooo sorry that it’s been so long! 😱 I kinda forgot about the forum with life being so busy)

Crutchy grins. "Yeah... I usually jus' go to the library... but y'know. They have to close at night too." As they reach Tibby's, he quickly speeds up to open the door for her.

Pepper laughed softly. "Yeah... I know what you mean." She looked sheepish again. "I've almost got locked up in the library a couple of times because I forgot they were closing."
She thanked him as they entered the small cafe. It wasn't too busy which was nice.
