By the time that Lacey had finally made it to Harlem, her heart was pounding from her fast pacing. She was trying to get things done as quickly as possible, and she knew that she was going to have to find Crackerjack soon enough to see if she could find Darcy that way. All that she could do was hope that Darcy hadn't changed her mind about where to go and that everything would go smoothly so that she would have time to get everything that she needed to done before she met back up with Spot... if she could make it back in time to meet up with him.
After checking with Mr. Britt about Darcy, she had managed to find that Trixie had indeed been there lately, but hadn't been there the night before. It could have meant that she wasn't there, but it also could have easily meant that she just missed curfew. Either way, Lacey found herself back out and on the way to try and find Crackerjack, though she didn't even know where to begin looking.

It had been quite a day. Crackerjack was more than ready to call it quits for the day, but the day was far from over. She sighed as she dragged herself into the lodge. The boys had been such a riot day. Who on earth let them drink coffee? Not that it was a real problem... They were just out of control today, and she blamed coffee. She knew it wasn't that though. The boys were antsy. The borough lines needed redrawing. It was getting harder to find good selling spots and that made the boys cranky and irritable and just uncontrollable. And well that and her. They knew she was, ahem, getting up there in years. It was about time for her to consider getting a new leader lined up.
She had been so deep in her thoughts, she had not realized there was another girl in the hallway and bumped into her.
"Oof!"

"Oof!"
Suddenly being bumped into caught Lacey a bit off guard, and she stumbled back a step or two. There was a moment where she had nearly snapped at the other girl, but almost instantly upon realizing who it was, she relaxed. Luck was on her side. Maybe she would be able to meet Spot once she was done after all.
"Crackerjack!" She exclaimed, eyes widening a bit. "I was lookin' for ya. Spot sent me from Brooklyn... I need ta know if you know of a 'Trixie' who's been stayin' here lately."

"Crackerjack!"
She was surprised the girl knew her name. Well, most people knew her name since she was the leader, but that wasn't the point. She was not familiar with Lacey. She wasn't from her borough.
"And... you are?" she asked cautiously.
"I was lookin' for ya. Spot sent me from Brooklyn..."
Crackerjack perked up at this. Spot needed to talk to her? That seemed odd... Harlem wasn't even close Brooklyn. "What's he want?"
"I need ta know if you know of a 'Trixie' who's been stayin' here lately."
She frowned slightly, not sure if she liked where this was going. She gave Lacey a shrug. "I know of her, yeah. She stays here sometimes, but she's usually in the Bronx."
Crackerjack wasn't really strict on borough hopping. The boys might not like it, but she didn't really see the harm. Harlem and Bronx were peaceful boroughs. It was fine if they shared selling spots and newsies and such.

"And... you are?
Lacey was about to give her name, but realized that it might not be a good idea in case Crackerjack talked to Darcy and told her that Lacey had been there. She didn't want to scare Darcy away again. "From Brooklyn. I'm a boid."
"What's he want?"
"Trixie isn't really named Trixie. Her name's Darcy, she's from Brooklyn. She's someone... really special ta Spot." Lacey didn't know how to explain this situation without taking all day. "She was in Brooklyn last night but she ran and we need ta know if she came here."
"I know of her, yeah. She stays here sometimes, but she's usually in the Bronx."
The Bronx. Lacey cursed under her breath. Was that another trip that she had to make? Or should she talk to Spot about it first?

"From Brooklyn. I'm a boid."
Crackerjack nodded. She supposed that would explain why she didn't recognize Lacey and why Lacey knew her name.
"Trixie isn't really named Trixie. Her name's Darcy, she's from Brooklyn. She's someone... really special ta Spot."
She cocked her head to the side. Someone special to Spot? This was new news. But then, what did Harlem really know about Spot's personal life?
"She was in Brooklyn last night but she ran and we need ta know if she came here."
Crackerjack shrugged. "She didn't sell today, but I can't say I saw her here." She motioned for Lacey to follow as she made her way to the front desk where the log book was. "But I can see if she signed in last night."

"She didn't sell today, but I can't say I saw her here."
Lacey swallowed thickly. What would she tell Spot? Sure, maybe she was overthinking this, but would he be upset with her if she didn't go straight to inspect the Bronx after getting this information? She couldn't be sure.
"But I can see if she signed in last night."
She nodded slowly, following her towards the front desk of the lodge, though she was still cautious. She just wanted to find Darcy. What had happened to make Darcy so desperate to hide from the people who cared about her?

Crackerjack opened the log book and flipped through until she got to the most recent sign-ins. She glanced at Lacey and shrugged. "Sorry ta say this, but she didn't come here. Best bet is Bronx. But be careful if you do go over there. The goils' lodge is close ta the Queens' border. If she was in Brooklyn last night, Bronx is alot closer than Harlem."
She gave Lacey an apologetic smile. "Sorry I can't be of much help. Tell Spot I'm sorry, but if I do hear anythin' about her, I'll send a boid over lickety-split."

Lacey cursed under her breath. She had to go to the Bronx now.
"But be careful if you do go over there. The goils' lodge is close ta the Queens' border. If she was in Brooklyn last night, Bronx is alot closer than Harlem."
She perked up a bit, eyes widening. "Yeah, I'll be real careful."
Once again, it seemed that fate was on her side.
"Sorry I can't be of much help. Tell Spot I'm sorry, but if I do hear anythin' about her, I'll send a boid over lickety-split."
Lacey nodded. "Thanks for tryin'." With that, she was off once again.

"Yeah, I'll be real careful."
Crackerjack nodded. "Good. Bronx and Harlem are peaceful boroughs but it can get a little nasty when boys from Queens come too close to the borders. Best stay away from Queens altogether is what I've hoid."
"Thanks for tryin'."
"No problem."
She watched as Lacey hurried off. It certainly made her curious to who this 'Darcy' person was and what she meant to Spot. But that was none of her business. Right now her business was to get some rest before checking on her newsies again.
