The day itself had seemed to fly by for Jack, and he had made quite a conscious effort to get through the day as quickly and as efficiently as possible. By the time that he was done selling his papes, he had been more than content to go back to the lodging house and just sit on the outside steps for a while. The weather wasn't as bad as it had been lately, and Jack had never minded the cold all that much. After a day of running around to sell papes, it was almost nice to just sit and cool off for a while, with no other responsibilities.

Spot was quite happy to see Jack on the steps of the lodging house. It meant that he wouldn't have to run around looking for the guy. He was in no real hurry yet, so he did not walk faster. In a few minutes, he was in hearing range.
"Hey Jackie-boy," he called out in a friendly tone. Yes, he was hear about business, but it wasn't really serious stuff. Just handing over some notes and asking about that meeting. Simple and calm. No need to get Jack worried when nothing seemed to be wrong.

"Hey Jackie-boy."
The blond perked up upon hearing Spot, turning his eyes to see the familiar borough leader approaching him. A jovial grin formed on his lips as he rose to his feet and walked to meet him. "Wasn't expectin' ta see ya here, Spot. Somethin' wrong in Brooklyn?"
Of course, it was a pleasant surprise, but nowadays, it felt as though something was wrong almost every time that he would see Spot. He was worried about things with Rip.

"Wasn't expectin' ta see ya here, Spot. Somethin' wrong in Brooklyn?"
Spot shook his head. "Naw, Brooklyn is fine. Jus' wanted ta check in wit' ya and give ya these." He tugged out a few folded up bits of paper from his pockets. "Just some ideas for the new borders. Mr. O'Quinn let me borrow some of his old maps of New York, so I thought these might help wit' that meetin'."
He looked a bit expectantly at Jack. Had the guy been able to talk about the meetings with the other leaders? And... Rip? Ugh, he really would rather not be in another meeting with that guy. True, the strike meeting had been fine. He had actually forgotten Rip had been there until they all went to jail. If the taller boy hadn't been in a different cell, he wasn't sure what could have happened. At the borders meeting, could he trust Rip? But no, he promised himself he would forget about Rip for awhile and focus on his borough and his cousin.

"Naw, Brooklyn is fine. Jus' wanted ta check in wit' ya and give ya these."
Jack carefully took the papers from Spot when he was handed them, opening them up to inspect them.
"Just some ideas for the new borders. Mr. O'Quinn let me borrow some of his old maps of New York, so I thought these might help wit' that meetin'."
He nodded a bit, still glancing over the ideas. "It all looks good ta me, though I'm still figurin' that we should talk ta the others first before we decide on anything too finally." He knew that Spot was bound to agree, so he wasn't worried about that, but he didn't know when they were going to be able to get all of the borough leaders together.

"It all looks good ta me, though I'm still figurin' that we should talk ta the others first before we decide on anything too finally."
Spot nodded. Of course the other leaders would need to be consulted and such... it was just the question of getting them all together.
"Yeah, I know. You been able to talk ta the others?" Specifically Rip, but Spot wasn't about to ask that. "Best ta get things rollin' soon. Some of my boys been gettin' inta trouble with Long Island."

"Yeah, I know. You been able to talk ta the others?"
Jack cleared his throat. It seemed as though his stress-free afternoon was going to turn into a stressful one after all. "Not yet. I can taday, I ain't got nothin' else happenin'."
"Best ta get things rollin' soon. Some of my boys been gettin' inta trouble with Long Island."
He bit his lip with a nod. "How's the rest of everything in Brooklyn? Anythin'... else happen?"

"Not yet. I can taday, I ain't got nothin' else happenin'."
Spot was slightly disappointed that Jack hadn't done anything yet, but he was probably just as busy as Spot keeping boys in line and such. He didn't want to ruin Jack's day. This matter was pressing... but not that pressing. "Jus' do it whenever you're able."
"How's the rest of everything in Brooklyn? Anythin'... else happen?"
He started to shake his head, but then he remembered Darcy. Jack had a right to know. "Well, actually yes somethin' did kinda happen last night."

"Jus' do it whenever you're able."
Jack nodded. He would be able to get that done.
"Well, actually yes somethin' did kinda happen last night."
Jack raised an eyebrow. What had happened? "Is it something' that you should be tellin' me or is it a private matter?"

"Is it something' that you should be tellin' me or is it a private matter?"
Spot didn't even bother answering Jack's question. "Darcy's in New York."
That would be answer enough. Perhaps Jack might know about her as 'Trixie.' After all, he was the only one besides Rip who knew about that particular nickname.

"Darcy's in New York."
Jack fell silent almost instantly, any thoughts of teasing the other male completely slipping out of his head. He might not have all of the pieces, but he had enough to understand who he was talking about. "How do you know?"

"How do you know."
Spot pursed his lips. "I saw her handwritin' in the goils' log book."
There was no mistaking her hand writing. He had seen it hundreds of times as his uncle scolded his cousin for having such awful writing. There was no way he wouldn't recognize it.
But onto a slightly different but related topic. "Have you hoid of a goil named 'Trixie' around here lately?"

"I saw her handwritin' in the goils' log book."
Jack bit his lip. Of course, handwriting would be hard to go off of alone, but he figured that Spot knew better than he did.
"Have you hoid of a goil named 'Trixie' around here lately?"
He frowned. "Maybe once or twice, I don't think she stayed more than a day or two at a time. Why?"

"Maybe once or twice, I don't think she stayed more than a day or two at a time. Why?"
Here was the big question, though it really wasn't necessary. "Did you sense somethin' strange or familiar about her?"
Jack hadn't met Darcy very often, but he should be somewhat familiar with her face. If anything... the Conlon features.

"Did you sense somethin' strange or familiar about her?"
Jack hadn't thought much about it, and it was difficult to recall since he hadn't seen her much. However, now that he was looking back on it, there had been something familiar about her.
"She kinda looked... like you." The realization set in like a ton of bricks.

"She kinda looked... like you."
Spot shook his head. "Thought so... she is here. Just got ta find her." He sighed. And they both knew that would take a lot of work. "I'm gonna head to Staten an' see if Thunder can come over and talk sense inta her."

Jack bit his lip. "Is there anything that I can do ta help?"
"I'm gonna head to Staten an' see if Thunder can come over and talk sense inta her."
That made sense.Thunder had always been good with words. "If ya ever need anythin', don't hesitate ta ask. And I'll let ya know if I see her again."

"Is there anything that I can do ta help?"
Spot shrugged. "Keep an eye out for her... let me know if you see her around here. See if she'd be willin' ta talk to Thunder at least."
"If ya ever need anythin', don't hesitate ta ask. And I'll let ya know if I see her again."
"I appreciate it..." He shook his head some. "Never thought she'd actually come back."
Of course, he prayed and wished for her return, but he never really believed she would.

"Keep an eye out for her... let me know if you see her around here. See if she'd be willin' ta talk to Thunder at least."
Jack nodded. Whatever Spot needed, he would do. He wanted Spot to get Darcy back just as much as anyone else. When you were a newsie, any bit of family was important.
"I appreciate it... Never thought she'd actually come back."
He quirked an amused smile. "It's hard ta get rid of a Conlon."

"It's hard ta get rid of a Conlon."
Spot gave his friend a light shove. "Very funny, Cowboy."
But he wasn't wrong. Conlons were rather resilient. He just hoped that resilience would be enough to keep him alive whenever Rip decided to come around. He really tried not to let such a thought linger. But it was hard. Especially with Darcy back.
He bit his lip. "You don't think he knows she's back?"

"Very funny, Cowboy."
Jack chuckled a bit, "Ain't it the truth."
"You don't think he knows she's back?"
His smile faltered. "I can head ta Queens and check... gotta ask Rip about the borders anyway. I could find a way ta figure it out."

"Ain't it the truth."
"Oh shut up," he snapped playfully. It had been awhile since they had bantered like this.
"I can head ta Queens and check... gotta ask Rip about the borders anyway. I could find a way ta figure it out."
Spot didn't like the thought of Jack going into Queens, but he certainly couldn't go unless he wanted to get killed. He gave his friend a slight nod. "That'd be for the best."
Rip wouldn't harm Jack ally to Spot or not. Spot knew that... but still he worried.

"Oh shut up."
Jack grinned. He had missed bantering with Spot. It was always good getting to see him again.
"That'd be for the best."
He nodded again. "I can try gettin' back to ya tomorrow with any news."

"I can try gettin' back to ya tomorrow with any news."
Spot nodded, that sounded reasonable to him. "If I'm not at the docks, I'll be at the lodge."
He wished Jack good luck, but it was due time he headed to Staten if he wanted to meet up with Lacey on time.

"If I'm not at the docks, I'll be at the lodge."
Jack nodded, wishing him luck in return before heading off towards Queens. He was going to have to find Rip soon if he wanted to be back before curfew.
