Spot was back home in Brooklyn. He hadn't made his return known. He just slipped into the lodge and went promptly to bed. It wasn't until morning at the distribution center that the boys realized Spot was back. Cloud certainly was relieved that the leader was back. Everyone probably was. However, now wasn't the time to think about pleasantries. Spot had a lot to do that day, and selling wasn't really high on the to-do list. He was just watching all the newsies come in at the moment. There were a few birds he needed to talk to about the new Brooklyn.

By the time that Lacey had made it back to Brooklyn, her initial plan was just to find Cloud and see if Spot had come back yet. However, before she had even been able to think about finding her fellow bird, her eyes had fallen upon a familiar face, and she had gone practically racing up to him. Throwing her arms around Spot, relief flooded every inch of her body.
"You're okay, I thought Rip had killed ya..." She murmured.

"You're okay, I thought Rip had killed ya..."
Spot had been so focused on watching for his birds that he did notice a flash of red out of the corner of his eyes. He was surprised as someone suddenly flung their arms around him and held him tight.
"Wha-what? Lacey?"

"Wha-what? Lacey?"
She removed her head from where her face had been buried into his shoulder, flashing him a small smile. "I was so worried about ya. You were just gone when I woke up one mornin', I thought ya were dying'."

"I was so worried about ya. You were just gone when I woke up one mornin', I thought ya were dying'."
Spot furrowed his brows. He hoped she hadn't... no, he wouldn't think about that. "I jus' went to 'Hattan. Didn't one of the boys tell you?"

"I jus' went to 'Hattan. Didn't one of the boys tell you?"
Her face fell a bit. "Were ya really there? Cloud mentioned it, I just..." Lacey let out another sigh. Sure, she hadn't gone to Queens, but she had definitely been planning on it if he hadn't been there.

"Were ya really there? Cloud mentioned it, I just..."
Spot pursed his lips a little and nodded. "I went to Manhattan ta talk wit' Jack then I went to Staten for the night."

"I went to Manhattan ta talk wit' Jack then I went to Staten for the night."
She deflated a bit. So he hadn't been with Rip after all. She felt bad now, knowing that she had worried Ace by being there, and then insisting that something was wrong when nothing was. She would have to apologize the next time she saw him.
"Well... are you alright?" She bit her lip.

"Well... are you alright?"
Spot glanced over at the line as more boys came in to buy their papers before nodding. "Yeah, I'm fine." He pursed his lips. "There's just a lot ta do..."
He had plans and adjustments to make... to prepare for a new Brooklyn.

"Yeah, I'm fine."
As much as Lacey wanted to believe that there was nothing bigger going on, she just couldn't.
"There's just a lot ta do..."
"Spot," She cleared her throat, "What's goin' on?"

"Spot, what's goin' on?"
Spot sighed. He should have known she would ask that. It wasn't like this was a secret anyways. Soon, the whole borough would know.
"Some changes to Brooklyn, that's all," he answered quietly. "You'll find out everything later in the evening."

"Some changes to Brooklyn, that's all,"
She didn't like the sound of that. Wasn't Spot against change in Brooklyn? Brooklyn had been his girl for years before Lacey had ever come into the picture. What changes could he be talking about?
"You'll find out everything later in the evening."
Lacey huffed a bit, a nervous pit forming in her stomach. "Spot, please."

"Spot, please."
Spot felt another sigh leave his lips. "I'm settin' up a meeting for all boids tonight. You will know everything then."
He was firm. He didn't want the changes getting out before he had talk with all his birds. It wasn't that he thought Lacey would tell or anything. There were just too many curious newsies hanging about that did not need to know this news ahead of time.

"I'm settin' up a meeting for all boids tonight. You will know everything then."
A sad sigh left her lips. If it was something that involved telling all of the birds, then something was already telling her that she knew what was happening. They were getting older, after all.
So, with a sad nod, she took a step back. "Sorry."

"Sorry."
He raised an eyebrow. "You don't have ta apologize."
There was no need. It wasn't her fault... if she knew what he was referring to, it really wasn't her fault. This day was bound to come, and well, it was coming a little sooner than anyone had expected it. No one would very happy, but it had to happen.

"You don't have ta apologize."
Lacey nodded again, stuffing her hands into her pockets. "I just... don't want ya to go."

"I just... don't want ya to go."
Spot shrugged. "It can't be helped." He really couldn't be leader for ever. "Brooklyn will be fine," he added softly so the others would not hear as they passed by. "I can't be leader forever."

"It can't be helped."
Admittedly, his words seemed a bit too nonchalant for her taste about the whole thing, but she couldn't blame him. It had been approaching for a long time.
"Brooklyn will be fine. I can't be leader forever."
As much as Lacey wanted to be hopeful for the future, she was also reluctant to leave behind the lifestyle that she had been living ever since her parents died. She didn't know what she would do afterwards. What else was she good for?
"What will you do afterwards?" She murmured.

"What will you do afterwards?"
Spot lowered his eyes. "That's..." He cleared his throat. "That's something for another day."
One step at a time. He didn't want to rush or worry anyone in Brooklyn. He wasn't leaving... yet. No need to create a panic.

"That's... That's something for another day."
Lacey sighed once again. It seemed as though she wasn't going to get anything more out of Spot for now.
"As long as you're sure, I'll be right there with you." She nodded.

"As long as you're sure, I'll be right there with you."
Those words... were comforting for the moment. Though, he knew it wouldn't be like that forever, but for now, he could indulge himself. The here and now was okay. The future was still a ways away.

Letting out a soft sigh in response to the silence that followed, Lacey cast another glance towards the line of newsies still waiting to get their papers for the day.
"I should probably go... stay safe, Spot." She murmured.

"I should probably go... stay safe, Spot."
He gave her a slight nod. "Have a good day... one of the boys will let you know about that meetin'."
First, he needed to go see Cloud about gathering all the birds together, and after that... he needed to find Bridges.

"Have a good day... one of the boys will let you know about that meetin'."
She sighed sadly. As much as she didn't want to go, she knew that it was necessary. The time was coming that they needed to move on.
So, Lacey headed off to get in line and start her day.

Spot watched her go, wondering how things would go later on... it would be difficult, but it wouldn't necessary turn out badly, right? Who knows what the future would hold? This didn't mean it was an ending just because he wasn't going to be leader anymore. It was a new beginning for him and his borough.
