Hoot was always glad for a break from selling. Sundays were usually the day should could set aside to relax and avoid working, but today was different. It was Easter. A day that she remembered fondly... it had taken a bit of work, but she had decided that she would go to the Easter service at Old Bergen Church. With the help of Ms. King, Hoot had been able to fix up a suitable Sunday dress to wear to the service.
She wasn't one to think too much on her looks. After all, living on the streets taught you not to be so concerned about the way you look. However, Hoot wanted to look presentable. Her parents had prided themselves on being able to look neat and prim on Sunday mornings with the little money that they had. Her family might not have been extremely rich, but they did their best to look nice when going to church. Hoot was going to follow what she had been taught, even if this was the first time she had gone to an Easter service since her parents had died.
Hoot took in a deep breath as she looked up at the church. It was Easter. It would be a happy day. She was going to church.

after visiting Frank's and his Parents graves, Three Left headed towards the church, since recently he tried to attend regularly. it didn't always work out though.
he had even bought a outfit in a second hand store. it was definitely not a suit, but it fitted him nicely and it was clean.
walking up to the church he took a moment to catch his breath, ever since a group of boys had jumped him the other week, he had been walking with a cane.

Just as Hoot had summoned the courage to finally enter the church, she was joined by a young boy. She gave him a small smile.
"First time?" she asked curiously. He did not seem like a familiar face in Jersey City. Not that she really knew most of the boys... but she was familiar with most of their faces. Plus, it was rather rare to see the boys coming to the church. It was usually a place newsies, in general, avoided.
She reached for the door handle and opened it for the two of them. "You can sit with me if you like," she invited in a whisper. She always felt it was disrespectful to speak loudly inside the church.

"First time?" where did she come from? "no miss, i've been here before. it is my first time during Easter though" she sounded familiar but the quarter hadn't fallen yet.
"You can sit with me if you like," he gave her a smile. "thank you miss, i would like that." he said, while slowly making his way inside.

"No, miss. I've been here before. It is my first time during Easter though."
Hoot looked at him curiously. While she might not be a regular attender, she did try to go as often as possible. She didn't seem to recognize his face all the same.
"Thank you, miss. I would like that."
She gave him a smile and motioned for him to follow her. Hoot was in no hurry, keeping a pace that would be easy for Three Left to keep up with. There was an empty row toward the back where they could sit comfortably. Hoot would have liked to sit closer, but she knew the two of them wouldn't be received well if they tried to get any closer.

he knew this girl, but from where? that kick to his head must have scrambled his memory. wel time for a tried and true, albeit a slightly risky method.
"miss, my name is Three Left, have we met before?"
tapping with his fingers on the cane handle, he wondered if, no when mister Reed would notice the new scratch on the well cared for floor. in his defence though: how was he suposed to know, that his cane had a spring loaded hidden blade? miss Lawrence hadn't told him about that feature. Tad had nearly jumped out of his skin. in hindsight that was pretty funny.
the man on his other side pulled him to his feet, and held him long enough for his cane to take over. "that was unusually nice" he thought.

"Miss, my name is Three Left, have we met before?"
Hoot furrowed her brows slightly as they sat down. The name sounded familiar... However, she did not answer him, but instead, Hoot motioned for him to be quiet as the minister spoke to the church. She would have to answer Three Left's question after the service.
The minister welcomed everyone to the service before calling the people to sing a few hymns. Hoot was pleased that she could still remember most of the lyrics of the Easter hymns.

he remembered most of the lyrics, even though they where all in gaelic, as he couldn't remember the english ones. so he just sang along quietly, and hoped nobody would notice. the last one he did remember in english.
after they sat back down, the minister started to read from the book of Matthew. Three Left thought it was nice to listen to.

Hoot thought the minister did an excellent job on his sermon. It always made her rather pensive to hear the story of Easter. She really should come to Easter services every year. She was so deep in thought after the hearing the sermon that she did not realize the church service had been over for quite some time.

as he saw people leave after the service, he looked up at Hoot. after a while he spoke up. "miss, are you alright?" after getting to his feet, he leaned on his cane, waiting for her.

"Miss, are you all right?"
Hoot blinked, startled at the sudden interruption of her thoughts. Her face reddened slightly in embarrassment as she realized that the service had ended awhile ago.
"Oh sorry... I was just thinking," she apologized as she got onto her feet. "It was such a lovely service."

"Oh sorry... I was just thinking," Hoot apologized as she got onto her feet. "don't worry about it miss." Three Left said, lighting his pipe, as soon as they where off of church grounds.
"It was such a lovely service." "oh, it was." he smiled at her. "i will be heading home though, the evening edition won't sell itself." jokingly he added: "otherwise i would be out of a job."

"Don't worry about it, miss."
Hoot gave him a small, grateful smile as they left the church. She glanced back to look at the church one last time. She would be back soon...
"Oh, it was. I will be heading home though, the evening edition won't sell itself."
"Oh!" was all she could say. She hadn't even thought about the morning edition much less the evening edition. She had forgotten about newspapers altogether.
"Otherwise, I would be out of a job."
She nodded absentmindedly, wondering if she ought to consider selling as well. She wasn't one to sell on Sundays, but she was getting a little low on money.

"i have to make it to the ferry, miss." he looked up at Hoot. oh how he hated being this small.
"this outfit set me back quite alot, if i don't sell today, it will take me all of next week to earn it back."

"I have to make it to the ferry, miss."
Hoot gave him a puzzled look before realizing that he wasn't from Jersey. "Oh... right."
"This outfit set me back quite a lot. If I don't sell today, it will take me all of next week to earn it back."
She nodded in understanding. Getting sick or hurt could make you miss a day of selling, and that was a risk you didn't really want to make. "You better hurry then... The ferry's bound to be leaving this side for New York soon." She pursed her lips thoughtfully. "I know a short cut to the ferry. Save you about five minutes."

Three Left looked up at her, then at his cane then back at her.
"I know a short cut to the ferry. Save you about five minutes."
he smiled a cold but genuine smile. "thank you miss." he was really getting the hang of his cane.
a passing young lady, was wearing a braided rope bracelet, just like Frank. it didn't click right away, but after about 100 yards he started shaking a little.

"Thank you, miss."
Hoot just smiled. "It's nothin' really. Always glad to help."
She was just about to show him the way, when Three Left paused and began to shake. Her brows furrowed with worry. "Are you... okay?" she asked gently, placing a hand on his shoulder.

"Are you... okay?" Hoot asked gently, placing a hand on Three Left's shoulder.
the young boy was pulled back into reality, looked past her, in the direction they just came from. shook his head, looked again and then up at Hoot. "yeah, i am alright miss Hoot, just thought i saw Scout, which is impossible because he passed away."
"anyways lets see if we can still make the ferry."
OOC little late of a reaction, but this one took longer to cook until perfection.

"Yeah, I am alright, Miss Hoot. Just thought I saw Scout, which is impossible because he passed away."
Hoot lowered her eyes. She could feel her chest tighten at the words... "I'm sorry," she whispered. She knew all to well how it felt to lose someone close to you. "It'll be okay... somehow." It was hard to tell if she was speaking to herself or to Three-Left, but somehow, things would be okay. Things would... in sense, somehow get back to normal.
"Anyways, let's see if we can still make the ferry."
She smiled slightly. "We should be able to make it if we hurry a little. The shortcut will make sure of that."
