Normally, at this time, it would be a great time to be pick-pocketing. So why was Nickel hanging out at Medda's? Well, if anything, it was just too hot. Everyone outside was just miserable and cranky. It wasn't worth getting all hot and bothered just to pick-pocket. After all, he didn't have a half bad day of selling papers.
No, he was going to stay out of trouble and try to stay cool indoors. Medda had a nice place and backstage was actually pretty cool. One could almost forget that it was summer.

to Tumbler, it was scorching hot. and he was very thirsty. Medda usually allowed the newsies to come in for a drink of water. walking backstage, he saw Nickel.
"greetin's Nickel," he said making a theatrical bow. "hidin' from da heat are ya?"

"Greetin's, Nickel.
He glanced over at the younger newsie and nodded. The heat of summer took out all the energy to say much. All that yelling to sale paper earlier certainly didn't help.
"Hidin' from da heat are ya?"
Nickel shrugged. "More or less," he answered and made a motion to show that Tumbler was free to sit down by him if he wanted to.

"It's scorching hot, ain't it?"
Nickel nodded again. "It sure is..."
Almost everyone had complained about the heat at one time or another. This had to be one of the hottest summers in New York!

Tumbler held his recently purchased civil war canteen infront of Nickel. "ya fancy a drink mate?" he asked.

"Ya fancy a drink, mate?"
Nickel pursed his lips slightly before nodding. "That'd be great..."
It's funny how thirsty one can get when hot.

"Man, that's good."
Nickel nodded in agreement. His thirst was well satisfied for the mean time.
"Crutchy taught me how to whittle. I named it David, after the Mouth."
He raised an eyebrow. He didn't know Crutchy that well, so he didn't know what hobbies he had. Whittling wasn't a bad hobby he supposed. He just never picked up such hobbies.
"What are ya goin' to make out of that?" he asked curiously.

"I was thinkin' of a elephant, but I need a smaller knife to do that."
Nickel raised an eyebrow, squinting a little at the block of wood in Tumbler's hands. "An elephant?"
He wasn't very creative when it came to more artsy type of projects. It was hard to envision that block of wood becoming an elephant.

"An elephant?" Tumbler smiled, the shape of his block sure didn't look like the end product yet.
"it's just the basic form for now, when i get a smaller knife..." having not paused this time, he wasn't paying attention, and his knife slipped. Tumbler yelled some things a little boy shouldn't say. luckily for him, a knot in the wood stopped the blade from doing more damage.
"this ain't good, Skittery is going to be so angry with me." he cried. after this he put his finger in his mouth.
