"Then why did ya run?"
The pure size of the girl was what surprised Lacey the most. She wasn't tiny, per say, but Lacey was definitely a good three or four inches taller than her. She appeared to be on the young side, too, which didn't show through in her voice at all.
"I ran because I didn't wanna hear somethin' and have ya thinkin' that I was a danger to anythin' that you're doin'." She insisted, although she didn't even believe herself. Lacey was already beginning to plot her next escape plan, knowing that she could make it to the lodging houses if she had to. Perhaps then she could get Spot's attention.
"Where are you all from?" She demanded, forcing herself onto her feet as she prepped herself to bolt again. She had to find Spot. She had to warn him that there were newsies from Queens hiding out in Brooklyn with some sort of affiliation with Rip.

"I ran because I didn't wanna hear somethin' and have ya thinkin' that I was a danger to anythin' that you're doin'."
Lighter didn't seem to be convinced. "Why were ya in the buildin'?" she asked, eyes narrowing. If Lacey was trouble, she'd do her best to make sure she never said anything.
"Where are you all from?"
The girl seemed surprised at her answer but quickly recovered. "Ain't none of your business."
She did, however, notice that Lacey was preparing to run again. But hey, they were in a dead-end alley. She could handle it even if she was the smaller of the two.
Spot could feel his gut tighten as he realized where those newsies were running from. He glared up at the abandoned warehouse he had only just investigated the night before. Seems like there was more to that map than met the eye. He just hoped Lacey wasn't in any trouble.

"Why were ya in the buildin'?"
Lacey narrowed her eyes right back at the girl, "Ain't I allowed ta be curious? No one ever goes in there. I wanted ta check it out, an' the moment I found out someone else was in there, I left. Easy." She stated.
"Ain't none of your business."
She frowned, although for a moment, surprise flashed over the unfamiliar girl's face. Seizing her opportunity, Lacey shot forward, practically diving past the girl in an attempt to get back to the lodging houses. She had to warn Spot.

"Ain't I allowed ta be curious? No one ever goes in there. I wanted ta check it out, an' the moment I found out someone else was in there, I left. Easy."
"Curiosity killed the cat," the girl spat out bitterly. "You shouldn't get inta stuff ya know nothin' about. Live your cushy newsie life."
Lighter grunted as Lacey dove past her and knocked her balance. She whirled around to give Lacey chase, but suddenly she stopped and retreated into the shadows to watch. Just in time too, it seemed as if the Brooklyn boy coming towards Lacey hadn't seen her. She'd be able to hear a few things and report back... hopefully this wouldn't cause too much trouble. Archie was working so hard! They couldn't let the plan fall to bits like this.
Spot hurried past the warehouses, not sure what he was looking for, but hoping he'd somehow bump into Lacey. He was quite relieved when he saw her heading towards him.
"Lacey!"

"Curiosity killed the cat. You shouldn't get inta stuff ya know nothin' about. Live your cushy newsie life."
Lacey was almost insulted by the fact that the girl was calling newsie life 'cushy.' However, she wasn't given much time to think about it, racing towards the familiar territory. Once she saw Spot, her direction diverted directly towards him, practically pouncing on him as she embraced him tightly. She was still trembling from nerves, adrenaline, and exhaustion, and her breathing was heavy and labored.
Still clinging onto him for dear life, Lacey buried her face into his neck, struggling for a few moments to catch her breath before finally speaking up. "The map... That's bigger than us," She whispered, "Th-they were talking about you. I couldn't hear much, but I know they said your name. I know they were talking about you, S-Spot..." She breathed out, her voice shaking nearly as much as she was, her grip on him tightening in an attempt to convince herself that he was really still alright.

To say Spot was surprised at Lacey's sudden glomp would be an understatement.
"You okay?" he managed to wheeze out as she hugged him rather tightly. He could feel her shaking... something was up that was for sure.
"The map... That's bigger than us."
His eyes widened as he pushed her away a little so he could breathe and look into her eyes. "The map? What's going on? Did you... go into that warehouse alone?!"
"The-they were walking about you. I couldn't hear much, but I know they said your name. I know they were talking about you, S-Spot..."
Spot frowned. They were talking about him... that couldn't be good, could it? "Did you get any names?" he asked quietly, not wanting to push her but wanting to see if he could fit the puzzle pieces together to get a picture of what exactly he was getting into.
Lighter stayed put in her hiding place, frowning slightly. So Lacey had heard a few things after all, but thank goodness not enough to raise too many alarms. One good thing was, she now knew what the well-known Spot Conlon looked like. If the others ever needed to find him, they would know who to look for. Though thanks Lacey, things could get a little screwy. They just had to make sure they could keep things as calm as possible. Archie was depending on them... and there were so many more who were depending on her small group.

"You okay?"
Lacey shook her head. She didn't know what else to do. She didn't feel as though she was functioning very well, and she was beyond shaky.
"The map? What's going on? Did you... go into that warehouse alone?!"
She bit her lip, hesitating a bit due to the tone of voice that he was using. "I-I wanted ta help. I didn't wanna do somethin' bad. I wanted ta find out what was so important in there, but there were a bunch of people in the middle of the room, and they heard me, and this girl chased me all the way until that alley." She turned, pointing at the alleyway that she had run from.
"Did you get any names?"
Breathing out, Lacey forced herself to begin to calm down, closing her eyes tightly and running her fingers through her hair. There had been a name that someone had said when she had first run, although she couldn't be sure that she remembered it correctly.
"Um, I dunno... Lighter?"

"I-I wanted ta help. I didn't wanna do somethin' bad."
He put his hands on her shoulders. "I'm glad you want ta help. But goin' there wasn't the best ideas. You had me worr-" Spot stopped blushing a bit and coughed. "Anyways, it was a bad idea ta go alone... don't do that again."
"I wanted ta find out what was so important in there, but there were a bunch of people in the middle of the room, and they heard me, and this girl chased me all the way until that alley."
He raised an eyebrow, thinking back to the newsies he saw. He had saw two for sure, but there could have been more. "You know how many?" He glanced back at the alley. There wasn't a girl in sight. She probably was long gone by now.
"Um, I dunno... Lighter?"
Spot frowned. "Lighter... don't know any newsie 'round here by that name."
Lighter bit her lip, not liking her name being out in the open like that. She needed to head back to the others wherever they went as soon as these two disappeared.

"I'm glad you want ta help. But goin' there wasn't the best ideas. You had me worr-"
A small smile formed on Lacey's lips as Spot abruptly stopped himself, a faint blush mirroring the one on his cheeks. She was glad to know that he cared, although she had never doubted it for a second.
"Anyways, it was a bad idea ta go alone... don't do that again."
She bit her lip, "Yeah, um... Sorry." Lacey didn't entirely want to apologize, although she wasn't in any mood to argue about it being a good decision at the moment. She was shaken, and she could have sworn that the girl was still in the alleyway. That made her even more uneasy.
"You know how many?"
"Three or four," Lacey stated, although it was a cautious statement. She hadn't noticed or paid much attention to the number of people - she had just noticed that there were people. "Five is the absolute most."
"Lighter... don't know any newsie 'round here by that name."
She narrowed her eyes, "She's gotta be from Queens. They've all gotta be from Queens." Her voice held a bitterness that hadn't previously been there, although the venom behind her eyes vanished just as quickly as it had appeared.
"I only went alone because I wanna be sure that you're safe. I care about ya, a lot, and losin' ya... It'd hurt real bad. If someone hurt ya because of this map, I'd never forgive myself." Lacey admitted, although the moment that she put herself out there, she quickly went back on it. Spot was a definite weakness of hers, although she didn't want to say anything that would hurt her in the end. She wouldn't risk whatever she had with Spot for the world. "The borough needs ya. You're our leader. I would rather risk myself goin' in there alone rather than risk both of us doin' it tagether."

"Yeah, um... Sorry."
Spot nodded some, still trying to hide some blush. "Yeah... jus' remember that, okay?"
"Three or four. Five is the absolute most."
He was frowning, but he wasn't upset. It was alot of people but not too much. It raised concerns, but not to big. The smaller it was the easier it would be to handle. It made him nervous to think that there could be more people.
"She's gotta be from Queens. They've all gotta be from Queens."
Spot was tempted to agree, but he knew better than to jump to conclusions. "You sure? We shouldn't judge... I think it's probably Queens too, but we can't just jump Queens on this 'til we know for sure."
Lighter barely held back a bitter chuckle. Queens? She thought they were from Queens? Well, true Freckles was once from Queens, but that was just one. The rest were spread out for the most part. Seemed like Lacey wasn't too knowledgeable about what was really going on. That could be a good thing.
"I only went alone because I wanna be sure that you're safe. I care about ya, a lot, and losin' ya... It'd hurt real bad. If someone hurt ya because of this map, I'd never forgive myself."
He coughed awkwardly. "Well... I appreciate it, but still. Ya shouldn't go alone."
"The borough needs ya. You're our leader. I would rather risk myself goin' in there alone rather than risk both of us doin' it tagether."
Spot could see her point but he couldn't stand seeing her get hurt either. "No... ya should never risk yourself," he said firmly. "I won't risk myself and you shouldn't either."

"Yeah... jus' remember that, okay?"
Dropping her gaze to the ground, Lacey nodded a bit. "Okay." Her voice was significantly quieter than it had been before, although she really did just want to get out of there. Something about being there made her uneasy.
"You sure? We shouldn't judge... I think it's probably Queens too, but we can't just jump Queens on this 'til we know for sure."
Glancing back over at the alleyway, Lacey swallowed thickly in an attempt to calm her nerves. However, it wasn't really helping much, and Lacey found herself a bit more worried and jittery than before. "Listen, Spot, I really think that we should talk about this somewhere... Private." She lowered her voice once again. "Somethin' don't feel right..."
"Well... I appreciate it, but still. Ya shouldn't go alone."
Lacey sighed, "Forget I said anythin'." She quickly brushed it aside. After all, she wasn't sure if she would ever be ready to face whatever emotions she had. Spot gave her no signs of anything in return, so she would just have to deal with it until it went away.
"No... ya should never risk yourself. I won't risk myself and you shouldn't either."
Nodding slowly, Lacey bit her lip, glancing around briefly. Something really didn't feel quite right to her, and she didn't know what exactly it was. Taking Spot's hand, her movements were swift in beginning to pull him back towards the lodging house, where they would be able to talk alone if they needed to, or at least talk around people that they could trust.

"Okay."He nodded, hoping she understood his concern. He really would hate if something happened to her on his account. He would never be able to forgive himself. "Listen, Spot, I really think that we should talk about this somewhere... Private. Somethin' don't feel right..."Spot raised an eyebrow but nodded. There was something off about the area. He wasn't sure if he was being paranoid or if the feeling was real. Lighter pressed herself tightly against the shadows of the alley, hoping the two wouldn't discover her. And boy, did she have alot to report when she got back. "Forget I said anythin'."He sighed. Now was not the time to press. Lacey was scared and there seemed to be something weird going on. Best thing to do was head somewhere where they could talk alone. "Come on, let's head back." Lighter watched them go, waiting for them to be completely out of sight before she made her escape. The two seemed rather close... perhaps that would be important in the future? No matter. They would need to find a new meeting place very soon. ((Hey I gotta head to bed. I'll try to get on tomorrow afternoon. Great talking to you as always!))

"Come on, let's head back."Lacey was relieved to be getting away from where she was, although she couldn't help but continuously check behind her. She kept looking back over her shoulder, her hazel eyes scanning the crowd and searching for anyone who appeared to be following them. She had never been someone who would be necessarily paranoid. She liked to think that she was brave, despite being shy and reserved. She definitely had a reckless side to her, and she was willing to make sacrifices if the cause was worth it. However, walking back to the lodging house, which was only a block or two away, felt as though everyone was staring at them and making some sort of plans to hurt them. Lacey had never been that on edge before, her eyes as wide as saucers, and her heart pounding so quickly in her chest that it felt as though it would explode. As they approached the lodges, Lacey pulled him into the girl's lodge, where she quickly greeted Mrs. Harbour and pulled him back into her study, which was always open if it was needed for something important. Pulling the door shut behind her, Lacey finally allowed herself to begin to relax, closing her eyes tightly and leaning against the door. "That map is so much more than we thought it was, Spot... I don't want 'em hurtin' ya. I don't think it'd be a good idea for you ta keep lookin' into it. Let me figure it out. I promise, I can do it. I can find someone else ta do it with me, but I don't want 'em gettin' to ya. They'd hurt ya. I-I don't know what they'd do..." She somehow managed to begin working herself up again, although she quickly caught herself and stopped talking, determined to hide her distress from Spot. [You as well! I'll talk to you tomorrow! Goodnight!]

Spot's eyes widened in surprise as Lacey pulled him into the office the girls' lodge. Her worry also made him rather surprised. It seemed as if they had mural worries for each other...
"I... I know," he said quietly. "But I got ta."
He looked into her eyes. "If it has ta do wit' Brooklyn that's my responsibility. I know ya want ta help, but under my rules," he stated firmly. "Neither of us are gonna jump inta this an' get hurt. We'll think things through. I don't want ta get hurt and I don't want you gettin' hurt either."

"I... I know. But I got ta."
Lacey shook her head quickly, "N-no. No. Ya don't." She insisted. She wasn't one to talk back to Spot, but she was worried. If they were working for Rip, then these people were dangerous. If they weren't, for all they knew at that point, they could be even more dangerous. Lacey wasn't willing to let Spot risk that.
"If it has ta do wit' Brooklyn that's my responsibility. I know ya want ta help, but under my rules."
"Spot-" She began to object, although she wasn't given much time to before Spot continued with what he had been saying.
"Neither of us are gonna jump inta this an' get hurt. We'll think things through. I don't want ta get hurt and I don't want you gettin' hurt either."
Lacey broke eye contact a moment later, shaking her head and sighing. "Spot, please. The borough could keep runnin' without me. We need ya now. Ya don't have anyone picked out ta replace you yet." She lowered her voice, resorting to pleading with him instead of arguing. She was tired of arguing.
"I appreciate that ya wanna protect me. But I'm strong. I promise. I can take care of myself if I hafta." She whispered, slowly raising her eyes to meet Spot's blue ones once again.

"N-no. No. Ya don't."
Spot arched his brow. "I do," he said seriously. "For the sake of Brooklyn."
"Spot-Spot, please. The borough could keep runnin' without me."
He frowned. "Maybe that's true, but I'd never forgive myself if somethin' were ta happen ta you because of this map."
"We need ya now. Ya don't have anyone picked out ta replace you yet."
He winced at her correct accusation. He hadn't picked out a successor yet. He was pretty sure Jack had already settled on his pick. It was due time he started looking. Thunder had given him the oh so friendly reminder that he wasn't getting any younger.
"I appreciate that ya wanna protect me. But I'm strong. I promise. I can take care of myself if I hafta."
Spot didn't like it. Not one bit. "I don't... I don't care if you think you're strong. I want you to stay out of this," he insisted. "I can't have you gettin' hurt. It'll look bad for everyone," he resorted to the borough respect. "If I sent a goil out and she gets hurt... what'll the borough think? What'll 'Hattan and Harlem think? Bronx? Staten? Even Jersey?" He bit his lip. "This is serious, I know that. That's exactly why I can't let you go out again."

"I do. For the sake of Brooklyn."
Lacey would have groaned in frustration if she hadn't known that Spot was right. He could win that argument before it even began, as much as she hated to admit it. She didn't want to have him get hurt.
"Maybe that's true, but I'd never forgive myself if somethin' were ta happen ta you because of this map."
It took all of her self control for Lacey to not get sidetracked thinking about his words too much. She knew that she had to focus if she was ever going to get Spot to agree to anything close to what she wanted to do, but she couldn't help but think about the meaning behind everything that he was saying. Did he really care about her that much? Or was it just because she was a girl?
"I don't... I don't care if you think you're strong. I want you to stay out of this. I can't have you gettin' hurt. It'll look bad for everyone."
A frown now permanently resided on Lacey's face. Spot didn't want her doing anything? Was he really expecting to be able to cut her out of this completely? She knew too much about it already, and her curiosity would get the better of her either way. "That's not fair." She whispered.
"If I sent a goil out and she gets hurt... what'll the borough think? What'll 'Hattan and Harlem think? Bronx? Staten? Even Jersey? This is serious, I know that. That's exactly why I can't let you go out again."
"So what, you expect me ta sit back and wait for somethin' bad ta happen to ya? Have you not listened ta me at all? Are you blind? Spot, I care about you, and I'm glad that ya care about my safety and everythin', but I ain't gonna just sit back now that I know everything that I know! Ya may be my leader but you ain't my dad!" Lacey snapped right back at him. "I won't go back alone. I promise. But the boroughs respect ya. None of 'em woulda joined the strike if they didn't. Please don't worry about me." She sighed, running her fingers through her rugged auburn locks, "I-It's gettin' too confusin' for me ta have ya carin' like that about me..."

"That's not fair."
Spot sighed in frustration. "I know it ain't, but how else am I supposed ta keep you from gettin' inta trouble?"
He gave her a pleading look. Couldn't she understand the situation even a little? He didn't want her getting hurt on his watch period.
Ya may be my leader but you ain't my dad!"
He clenched his jaw tightly at her last sentence. He didn't say another word as she continued her retort.
"I won't go back alone. I promise. But the boroughs respect ya. None of 'em woulda joined the strike if they didn't. Please don't worry about me. I-It's gettin' too confusin' for me ta have ya carin' like that about me..."
His blue eyes were rather cold as he glanced at the clock on the wall. "I care about all my newsies, it ain't somethin' ta be confused about." He gave her a slight nod. "I best be headin' out. Been at the goils' lodge for too long." He paused a moment at the door and whispered under-breath. "Except... I may care for you the most."

"I know it ain't, but how else am I supposed ta keep you from gettin' inta trouble?"
"Ya aren't supposed ta keep me from anythin'!" Lacey groaned, closing her eyes tightly. Her head was beginning to hurt from having to fight for something that she should have been able to do after the first time anyway.
"I care about all my newsies, it ain't somethin' ta be confused about."
If Lacey had been able to, she would have laughed. Instead, it came out as a frustrated scoff, and she turned away from him. The night hadn't gone how she had expected it to at all.
"I best be headin' out. Been at the goils' lodge for too long."
She nodded curtly, gritting her teeth slightly. If he wanted to leave, then she would let him.
"Except... I may care for you the most."
Lacey bit her lip, barely catching what he had said. She never turned to face him, too afraid to do so with the frustrated and exhausted tears beginning to well up in her hazel eyes. She was exhausted, and she didn't want to fight anymore. She wasn't going to fight for Spot to see what she really meant if he didn't want to see it. She wasn't going to push something that wasn't there.
She didn't like thinking of herself as one of those girls who liked Spot purely in theory. There were a lot of girls that would call him cute and flirt with him from time to time, but there was never any foundation for those feelings. Lacey genuinely had come to like Spot, and she felt as though he balanced her out. Things felt different with him, and she was sad when she wasn't around him. She had been searching for him above anyone else when she had run from the warehouse, and he still didn't seem to understand. She didn't know what else she could do.
"Don't say it if ya don't mean it." She managed, her tone bitter and her voice shaky.

"Ya aren't supposed ta keep me from anythin'!"
Spot could feel his temper rising, but he kept it in check for the most part. "Oh, so I should jus' let you get hurt an' do somethin' stupid?"
He clenched his jaw tightly as he left the lodge. He had such mixed feelings now. What had happened in those past few moments? He wasn't sure... He probably should have kept his mouth shut, but it was too late now. What was he to do? He was worried about Lacey... and now she was probably going to get into more trouble. He might have to send some birds to-no, that wouldn't be good... He'd just have Cloud keep an eye on her as well as keep an eye on her from a distance. No matter what, he couldn't let her get hurt.
But for now, it looked like he was back at square one with things. He had thought things were going somewhere, that maybe just maybe he had something more with Lacey and that maybe Queens wasn't much trouble after all. Turns out, things weren't as good as he thought. More things were happening than he was actually prepared for. Lacey had given him a heads up, but at what cost? What cost for her? What cost for him? All the things that could happen kept his mind busy as he headed towards the docks. He wasn't going to stay at the lodge tonight... he had alot of thinking and planning to do. He needed a tighter security for Brooklyn now that he knew about some unknown newsies lurking around. Things were going to be very different the next couple of days.
He rubbed his temples and tried to focus on his borough. But it was hard... his thoughts kept straying to a certain red-head. What if something happened to her? What if... oh so many what ifs? And if only she would listen to him. She had done so much for him. Why wouldn't she let him keep her safe? Was it that hard? Or was it a girl thing? He didn't know. But he was certain that he didn't want her getting hurt as long as he was still leader of Brooklyn.

"Oh, so I should jus' let you get hurt an' do somethin' stupid?"
Lacey closed her eyes tightly. Did Spot really think that she was stupid? She wasn't going to do things without thinking them through first and planning things well enough to have an escape plan. She had outrun them once, and she could do it again. She was smarter than he seemed to be willing to give her credit for.
As soon as Spot left the lodge without another word, Lacey was left alone with her frustration and massive guilt and regret about some of the things that she had said to him. She didn't want to be mean. She didn't want to say anything that would hurt him, or to make him feel as though she felt anything less than respect and admiration towards him. There were so many things that she felt towards him, and it was a bit overwhelming, but there was no way for her to look at Spot and feel anything negative. She just couldn't.
Deciding quickly that she needed air, Lacey stormed out of the lodge, figuring that she could take a walk and just see where she ended up. She needed time to clear her head and forget about what had just happened... Although she couldn't help but think back to what Spot had said. Was there anything else there? Was it even remotely possible that he could care about her in the way that she did about him? Shaking her head, Lacey huffed and stuffed her hands into the pockets of her jacket. No. Of course not.

Spot found his way to the docks. Here was the best place for him to think. It was one of the rare places in Brooklyn that no one really bothered him and let him be. It was his special territory. And boy did he need it now. There was so much to think about these days. He wasn't sure what to do, and he certainly did not want to talk about it to Mr. O'Quinn or even Thunder. Those two wouldn't be much help. He needed someone who understood or at least had a similar experience.
He sighed. Like anyone fit that picture. But then again... He glanced toward the bridge thoughtfully. Maybe the Cowboy could lend a hand. He hated to admit it, but after spending so much time with Lacey, it was weird not talking things out with her. But since this was about her, he couldn't exactly confront her, not yet anyways. It wasn't going to work. Besides, he was still hurting and a bit angry with her.
It was time to head to Hattan and sort a few things out and then worry about Brooklyn. He needed to get his own head straight first before he worried about his borough.

Manhattan had been relatively quiet lately, especially since Pulitzer had finally acknowledged the newsies as a huge part of his company. For two years now, things had been running smoothly, and Jack had been able to settle down a lot more. He could focus more on running his borough, and teaching his successor how to do things for when he had to leave. He only had a year or so left, anyway.
However, visits from Spot were few and far between those days. It seemed like forever since he had sat down and talked to the Brooklyn leader, and he didn't know whether or not Spot was finding the same relaxed success with his borough, considering all of the news about Rip that he had learned through birds and through their last conversation. Needless to say, he was more than happy to sit down and talk to his friend.
Either way, Jack wasn't expecting a conversation anything like the one that Spot would have with him.

Spot was slightly surprised but grateful to find Jack so easily and alone for once. The guy had been a little busy lately with his successor. And well there was Sarah too. Probably why Spot felt like Jack would have some good advice for him on Lacey, plus he was a leader so there was that too all sorted out.
"Hey, Cowboy," he greeted. "Free ta talk a bit... alone?"

"Hey, Cowboy."
Jack's eyes lit up upon seeing Spot, glancing over him briefly before nodding. "Hiya, Spot. Good ta finally see ya again."
"Free ta talk a bit... alone?"
Immediately, the tone of the conversation shifted from lighthearted to serious. Had something happened in Brooklyn? Was someone hurt? Was Spot in danger? Manhattan would back him up without hesitation. "Yeah, acourse... What's this about?" He asked, nodding briefly to signal Spot to walk with him. They wouldn't get interrupted that way - newsies knew to stay away.
