"Hardly anything is ever fun anymore."
Spot wondered if that comment was directed at him... or just life in general. He wasn't going to point any fingers.
"Guess it's part of growing up," was his reply as they entered the park.
Fun was something for kids. Adults didn't really have fun. At least, not that he had seen. Adults were a bit self-centered and cared only about money. From what he had seen though. Not all adults were like that. He seemed to forget about Mr. Denton and Governor Roosevelt. It wasn't like he really go to see those adults around Brooklyn.

"Guess it's part of growing up."
Lacey nodded slowly. Everything got harder as people got older. Things were never going to be the same as when they had been younger, and that was a painful thing to accept after such a long time.
"I guess." She murmured, following him into the park. It wasn't too crowded, luckily, but there were still a couple people walking around here and there.

"I guess."
Spot pursed his lips, not sure what else to say. The two just walked silently through the park. They passed by a few fellow newsies, but the newsies didn't pay them much attention. Everyone was minding their own business and enjoying the park. A few musicians were playing at one of the entrances of the park. Probably seeking to earn a few bits to make it through another day.

The silence was the kind that Lacey didn't know how to feel about. It sucked not being able to talk to him, but she didn't know what to say if she did. It just felt strange, and she didn't know how to make anything better. The walk through the park just felt long and forced, and she didn't know what to do.
"It's a nice day." She finally stated, with a soft sigh. It was almost like they were back to square one all over again.

"It's a nice day."
Spot glanced at her and nodded in agreement. "Yeah... it is nice."
The weather was nice. It wasn't too cold or too hot. It was as Lacey said: nice.
"Hope it means an easier winter..."

"Yeah... it is nice."
Lacey nodded a bit. Hopefully it would stay like that for a little while longer that year.
"Hope it means an easier winter..."
She bit her lip. It was more than likely getting close to her last year or so as a newsie, and it was hard to think about. She couldn't imagine her life any other way.
"I'm sure it'll be fine. And if not, there are some nice jackets out there." She shrugged.

"I'm sure it'll be fine. And if not, there are some nice jackets out there."
Spot pursed his lips. "Yeah... but enough for all the boys?" He wasn't so sure.
As leader, he had to think about the welfare of all the newsies in his borough. Perhaps he let it worry him a bit too much. It was such a big responsibility...

"Yeah... but enough for all the boys?"
She bit her lip. Lacey always did her best to provide for the people that needed it, taking turns selling with people and trading off coats, or giving them some extra cash so that they could buy their own. She would even sometimes teach some of the girls to knit things like scarves and extra blankets.
She hated how cruel the winter months always were.
"I guess we'll just have to hope for the best." She replied.

"I guess we'll just have to hope for the best."
Spot sighed and nodded. That was all they could really do... Winter was never something they could really prepare for. Sometimes the winters were mild. Sometimes the winters were especially hard. They all tried to prepare as best they could but sometimes it just wasn't enough.
"Yeah..."
It was always like this. Mr. O'Quinn always gave whatever he could, but Spot felt like he needed to do more as leader.

”Yeah...”
Lacey bit her lip again. What was the Winter going to be like? There was always the chance of someone getting really sick, and Lacey didn’t know what to do to help that.
“I’m sorry.” She sighed quietly.

"I'm sorry."
Spot looked at Lacey and shook his head. "No need for you ta apologize..." He frowned up at the sky. "It's just what life is like for kids like us."
It was sad... but there really wasn't any way that they could change it. But maybe, in the future, they could do something. When they were older... maybe they could help the younger newsies somehow.

”No need for you ta apologize..."
Lacey sighed softly. Apologizing was the only thing that felt appropriate in the situation.
"It's just what life is like for kids like us."
It was a harsh truth. One that Lacey hated. But what could she possibly do? There was barely any more time before she was done being a newsie, and she didn’t know if she’d be able to survive beyond that. She could work in a factory, but she couldn’t afford a place to stay, and factories were dangerous.
“It ain’t fair that they get ta stay inside with heat and blankets and all that, while we’re out here freezin’ on the streets.” She muttered.

"It ain’t fair that they get ta stay inside with heat and blankets and all that, while we’re out here freezin’ on the streets.”
Spot sighed. "Yeah... somethings just won't change."
Adults (and even some newsies) had already forgotten about the Newsies Strike. They forgot their promises to help the kids on the streets.
"If the prices of papes stop changin' so much..." he trailed off.
If the prices would stay low, they could make it. Everyone would be able to save a little that they could use to survive winter.

"Yeah... some things just won't change."
It was an unfortunate truth, but something told Lacey that it would be impossible for her to ever live a nicer life than she did as a newsie. At least being a newsie she had a family beyond just what was left of it.
"If the prices of papes stop changin' so much..."
She bit her lip. Was that even possible? Pulitzer and Hearst didn't care if any of the newsies survived the winter, so why would they stop messing with the pape prices?
"I doubt that'll happen." She commented dryly with a small sigh.

"I doubt that'll happen."
Spot nodded grimly. He knew there was really no chance of the paper prices dropping anytime soon. It would be a blessing if something could change the minds of the newspaper, but he and Lacey knew all too well that they didn't care for the kids of New York.
"We'll make it through somehow," he muttered.
He would do whatever it takes to keep his newsies safe through the winter.

"We'll make it through somehow,"
Lacey nodded. They had no other choice, really. She didn't want to lose anyone to another winter, and she was just hoping that this winter wouldn't be as bad as the last few. If all went well, maybe it would be manageable.
"We have no other choice." She whispered.

"We have no other choice."
That was the sad truth. Kids like them just had to work hard to make ends meet and just hope for the best. They had no power to change their lives.
Spot stopped walking, realizing the two had reached the end of the park. Was it time to part ways, or maybe walk a little farther? He glanced at Lacey, trying to gauge her feelings.

Once they hit the edge of the park, Lacey let out a small sigh. Perhaps that was the universe telling them that they should have parted ways right there, but Lacey didn't want to be alone again. She had given Spot time and she had taken time for herself, but she didn't know how to fix things anymore.
"Is this the end?" She whispered softly, looking back at Spot.

"Is this the end?"
Spot pursed his lips and glanced over at her. He shrugged. "It... doesn't have ta be. Unless you want it ta."
The past couple of days had been rough for the two of them. It was probably time for them to make up, but of course, things weren't always that easy. They had needed time to think and rethink. Now, it was better to make up. Though... things would be a little different for awhile. This 'fight' had been much different than the past ones.

"It... doesn't have ta be. Unless you want it ta."
Lacey bit down harshly onto her bottom lip. Things weren't always as simple as she wished that they were. "I don't wanna lose ya... b-but I don't know how ta make it better."
She hadn't meant to let her voice tremble in the way that it did. She had been holding back her emotions for days now, and things were rough when it came to getting herself back under control again. But what could she do? She couldn't just build up a wall and keep it there forever.

"I don't wanna lose ya..."
Spot sighed softly, turning to face Lacey, and brushed a stray hair away from her face. "You haven't lost me..."
"B-but I don't know how ta make it better."
He pursed his lips, not expecting to hear her voice tremble so. It seemed like this fight had shaken her up more than he had thought.
"I don't know either," he admitted quietly. "We just have ta figure it out somehow."

"You haven't lost me..."
Lacey swallowed thickly. She didn't understand this. She didn't know what was happening between them anymore. Things seemed to be hot and cold all the time and it was hard to keep up. And yet, Spot kept pulling her back anyway.
"I don't know either. We just have ta figure it out somehow."
She nodded slowly, her eyes dropping to the ground with a soft sigh. "I just don't know how ta start. I don't know where we stand with one another, or what's goin' on..."

"I just don't know how ta start."
Spot could only sigh. He didn't really know where to start either. Were relationships supposed to be this rough?
"I don't know where we stand with one another, or what's goin' on..."
"I don't know either," he admitted. "It's just... alot." It was frustrating not knowing what to do. It was not fun walking on eggshells... but they couldn't exactly ignore what had happened.

"I don't know either. It's just... alot."
Lacey nodded slowly. She figured that this sort of stumbling around when it came to relationships would go away with time, but with her and Spot, things seemed to be great, and then they would just go crashing down again. She didn't know if it was normal or not, purely because she had never really seen relationships before.
"Could I... take ya somewhere?" She swallowed thickly. She didn't figure that this would do much of anything when it came to re-piecing together her relationship with Spot, but it was something where maybe she could show him that she wanted to open up to him more.

"Could I... take ya somewhere?"
Spot pursed his lips. He could tell that it took alot for Lacey to ask that. He had been planning on talking to Mr. O'Quinn before the boys came back, but he supposed that could wait. Lacey looked like she'd be crushed if he refused. Perhaps this was part of the making up process. The first step so to speak.
He nodded. "I don't mind."
