"I don't mind."
That response brought a small smile to Lacey's face. Carefully, she latched her hand into his, ignoring the blackness of it because of the charcoal. She had a special place that she wanted to take him--a place that she had only ever gone before with her brothers and her parents.
She began leading him back towards the small apartments along the side of Brooklyn. None of them were nice, but there was a small wooded area that had acted as a backyard of sorts for Lacey and her brothers when they had been growing up. Inside of a small patch of bushes, her father had cleared a path and made them a small house where they could play in while he was off working.

Spot was surprised when she took his hand. He didn't think she'd like to get the sootiness on her hands. However, she seemed happy, so he wouldn't say anything. She seemed rather eager to take him somewhere.
He glanced around somewhat curiously, taking in the apartments they had passed. It had been some time since he had crossed this part of town.

As they finally approached the small patch of woods, Lacey could already see that familiar group of bushes, along with the stones that her father had placed to lead to the front door.
"It's a little cramped getting in, but there's more room inside." She hadn't been there in years. She could barely remember it, with some of their old blankets and books and such inside. However, as she carefully bent down to move in through the overgrown opening, there was a feeling of comfort that washed over her.
The shack wasn't much. It was built for three kids to sit inside, with her youngest brother still being a baby at the time. It was crazy to think how much they had grown up since then.

"It's a little cramped getting in, but there's more room inside."
Spot pushed back a bit of the brush surrounding them. He had never known there was such a place over here. He would have thought the city would have taken over any place like this. He crouched down a bit to follow Lacey, curious as to what this place was and how Lacey knew about it.
He squinted a bit to adjust to the inside light. "What.. is this place?"

"What.. is this place?"
Lacey bit her lip a bit as she settled down onto the floor, wiping a couple leaves and some dirt away from beneath her. "It's... my old backyard."
Of course, she figured that it was probably a bit weird that she had brought Spot there, but it was an important place to her. It was the last bit of her parents that she had left.
"Sorry it isn't much, I haven't been here in years... I just, I wanted to take you somewhere that's special to me. Just because I know I snap at you a lot and it may seem like I don't care, but I really lo..." She swallowed thickly. She didn't feel that it was something that she needed to say right then. She didn't want to make Spot feel weird. "I really do care about you a lot. And trust you."

"It's... my old backyard."
Spot didn't know what to say... He felt like he shouldn't be here. A place that had once been a part of Lacey's happy home.
"Sorry it isn't much, I haven't been here in years..."
He quickly shook his head. "No, no... it's fine." He took a seat beside and gazed around. "I like it."
It must have been fun... playing here when she was younger. Spot barely remembered what play was like. His family had always lived in tight apartments away from yards and nature. When his parents had passed, he and his brothers had stayed with their uncle for a short time by the docks and definitely did not have time for play.
"I just, I wanted to take you somewhere that's special to me. Just because I know I snap at you a lot and it may seem like I don't care, but I really lo... I really do care about you a lot. And trust you."
He glanced over at her, knowing it took alot for her to share that with him. He reached out and took her hand. "It's fine... I think it's great." He pursed his lips some. "An'... I'm sorry for snappin' at you the other day." He knew, in a way, he had every right to be snappy with her, but it seemed like apologizing was the right thing to do. He had gotten a bit carried away in his worry and anger. "I guess we needed to jus' find a place like this ta apologize and make up, huh?"

"No, no... it's fine. I like it."
Of course, there was always the possibility that Spot was just being nice. She realized that, but it was still nice for Lacey to hear that maybe bringing Spot there hadn't just been a stupid idea. He at least seemed willing to deal with being there for a few minutes.
The feeling of Spot taking her hand again brought her back to reality once more, and she locked eyes with him again. Perhaps something like this would work as a sort of 'present' after all, even though it hadn't cost her anything.
"It's fine... I think it's great."
She swallowed thickly, nodding and gripping onto Spot's hand just a bit tighter, almost as a way to comfort herself and convince herself that she wasn't just imagining that he was there.
"An'... I'm sorry for snappin' at you the other day."
Lacey shook her head quickly, "I messed up. You snappin' was exactly the reaction ya shoulda had. I was bein' stupid." She knew that she had messed up. She just wanted to own up to it and hope that it would help them to move on from it.
"I guess we needed to jus' find a place like this ta apologize and make up, huh?"
She let out a small, breathy laugh, "I guess so." Did that mean that they were making up? She certainly hoped so. She didn't think that she could go another day with things being awkward like that.

"I messed up. You snappin' was exactly the reaction ya shoulda had. I was bein' stupid."
Spot shrugged. "I didn't have ta be so snappy..."
"I guess so."
He cracked a small smile and squeezed her hand. "Let's put it in the past, okay?"

"I didn't have ta be so snappy..."
Lacey shrugged a bit. She had deserved every ounce of snappiness that she had gotten from Spot. She had scared him, and his reaction made sense.
"Let's put it in the past, okay?"
She smiled, nodding with a sigh and squeezing his hand back. "That sounds amazing." This was finally the step towards moving on from it that they had been needing for the past few days. Hopefully, things would work out well in the end.

"That sounds amazing."
Spot smiled. "Yeah, I guess it does."
They were finally taking a step forward in making things right. It wasn't a big step, but it was the beginnings of something in the right direction.

"Yeah, I guess it does."
Lacey bit her lip softly. What was the most appropriate reaction to this right now? She didn't know how much was good and how much was too much, and it was incredibly confusing.
"Spot?"

"Spot?"
He turned to face Lacey. "Yeah?"
Their eyes met. It seemed as if they were still gauging each others' feelings. They weren't sure what to do. It was easier said than done to forget the past. Lacey was forgiven. Spot was forgiven. But still... there was a bit of awkwardness lingering.

"Yeah?"
Time seemed slower in that moment to Lacey when their eyes met. She didn't know what to say for sure, a lump having formed in her throat and making it difficult for her to just move on with it. However, she inched a bit closer to Spot.
"Please don't hate me for this." She whispered softly, her fingers gently reaching out to graze Spot's cheekbone for a brief moment.

"Please don't hate me for this."
Spot's brows furrowed in confusion. "Don't hate you for--"
He was cut short as Lacey reached out to touch his face. Time seemed to stop as her fingers barely touched his cheek. He didn't know what to say or what to do. It definitely caught him off guard... but he did wonder.
Why did she think he'd hate her for this?

"Don't hate you for--"
Of course, Lacey's heart was practically beating out of her chest as she sat there in front of Spot. There was an unreadable expression on his face, and it made Lacey worry for a moment about proceeding.
It was just a moment where Lacey was confident enough in herself to actually follow through with anything. The movement was quick, her heart seeming to stop as time slowed down for a brief second. Her lips pressed to his for a moment, and then it was over, her cheeks turning a deep shade of flaming red.
"I, uh--sorry." She cleared her throat, gaze dropping to the ground as she silently prayed that she hadn't done anything stupid.

"I, uh--sorry."
Spot's eyes widened as she came closer to him. And, his heart skipped a beat... it happened so suddenly and ended just as quickly.
Her apology was also rushed... He didn't know what to say. His mind was still trying to register what had happened, and why?

Lacey's whole body felt as though it had shut off in an instant. It had been an overload, and she didn't know how to move forward from that. Almost instantly, she made a beeline for the exit to the small space, figuring that it would be best to run away now rather than face any sort of reaction from Spot.
How could she have let herself overstep like that? She had been putting it off for such a long time, telling herself that it would happen when it was supposed to, and now she had gone and messed that all up.

Spot wasn't sure what to do and then suddenly, Lacey bolted.
"W-wait!" he called out scrambling up after her.
He didn't have much trouble, thanks to his height. Though, it did take some energy crawling out and running after her.
"Lacey! Wait!"
He wasn't sure what they'd say when he caught up... he wasn't really sure of anything right now. But he knew for sure that he couldn't just let her leave like that. They were not going to run from their problems. Not anymore.

"W-wait!"
Lacey's heart was beating so quickly that she barely heard him over the rushing of blood in her ears. What had she done?
"Lacey! Wait!"
Finally, she slowed to a halt, although she was too afraid to look him in the eye as she slowly turned back to face him. "I'm, uh, sorry. I don't know what came over me, I just thought..." She mumbled, finally giving up on trying to explain herself and just sighing in defeat. "I'm sorry."

"I'm, uh, sorry. I don't know what came over me, I just thought..."
Spot swallowed, trying to catch his breath.
"I'm sorry."
He slowly shakes his head. "No.... it's fine. I mean unexpected... but um." He glanced at her, trying to meet her eyes. "I um... I'm sorry for scaring you. I just..." He fingered his slingshot hanging off his belt. "Well... I guess I didn't expect to have my first kiss be like that." He chuckled weakly. "It's fine... really."

"No.... it's fine. I mean unexpected... but um. I um... I'm sorry for scaring you."
Lacey nearly laughed. She had been the one who had startled him, quite obviously. She should have been the one apologizing.
"Well... I guess I didn't expect to have my first kiss be like that."
She cursed under her breath. So she had messed things up.
"It's fine... really."
"I'm still sorry." She exhaled again, covering her face. They had been in a shaky place, and she had done this, and it wasn't what Spot deserved. She would take it back if she could, just to make it better for him. "You deserved so much better..."

"I'm still sorry."
Spot sighed and stepped closer to her. "I already it's fine..."
"You deserved so much better..."
He pursed his lips and shook his head even though Lacey probably could not see that. He carefully placed his hand under her chin and raised it so she was looking up at him.
"That," he replied softly. "Is what I was going to say to you..."

"I already said it's fine..."
Lacey let out a soft sigh, although she reluctantly nodded. She didn't want to ruin the fact that they were getting things worked out again by arguing with him. If he said that it was fine, then it was fine, and they could move on and pretend that it never happened.
"That, is what I was going to say to you..."
The feeling of Spot's hand gently raising her chin up so that she met his gaze was one that Lacey never thought that she would feel. Her hazel eyes were wide and her heart was going crazy once again, her teeth beginning to absentmindedly gnaw on her bottom lip. "O-Oh." She squeaked out.

"O-Oh."
Spot pursed his lips slightly. "Maybe we both deserve better... but, I'd rather stay with you," he said softly. "That is, if you'll have me."
This might not have been the way he had envisioned things going, but somehow he didn't mind so much. All relationships would have their ups and downs. It was just up to him to make sure the relationship didn't end.

"Maybe we both deserve better... but, I'd rather stay with you."
Lacey's heart fluttered at his words, eyes locked on his with the faintest of smiles beginning to tug on her lips. "Really?"
"That is, if you'll have me."
She beamed a bit, "You're the only one I want." Her voice was no louder than a whisper, but she didn't feel like it had to be. As long as she still had him.
