Lacey felt terrible for missing Spot's birthday. She had told herself that she would do something special for him like he had seemed to do every time some sort of event would come about in her life, but she had gotten caught up in everything else and forgotten. No matter what she tried to think of to do and make it up to him, there didn't seem to be anything that she could think of. She couldn't afford anything too nice, and as the weather was getting colder, she couldn't afford to try selling extra papes, either. She was caught up in something that she couldn't escape.
Eventually, she had managed to scrounge together a couple of extra coins, and she had figured that perhaps she could take Spot out for some hot chocolate somewhere to celebrate his birthday and to help combat the cold weather. The only problem then became the fact that she hadn't seen him at all that day, and she had no clue where to look. So, she had gone to the bridge, just hoping that perhaps she would be able to find him there, coins still tucked away and jingling in the pocket of her light jacket as the sun was beginning to set.

It was getting colder. November was just around the corner meaning that even colder weather would be coming. Cloud should probably just stay in Brooklyn, but he had promised some of the younger boys in Manhattan that he would teach them a few card games. The bridge was always a cold walk... and very windy at this time of year. But a promise was a promise. If the weather was too bad, he could just stay in 'Hattan. Spot would understand.
He was, however, surprised to see someone else on the bridge. Most people had already made there way across the bridge by this time. Cloud had been unfortunate with selling and had been late. He wondered who else could be this late in crossing?
"Lacey?" He hadn't expected her over here. He would have thought she'd be with Spot... but then again, he hadn't been seeing much of Spot either. Where could he be?

"Lacey?"
Lacey's gaze practically whipped around at the sound of a voice, though she deflated a bit when she recognized that it was Cloud. It wasn't that she wasn't happy to see him, just that he hadn't been quite who she was looking for.
"Hey, Cloud." She cleared her throat, shooting him a small smile. "Do you know where Spot is?"

"Hey, Cloud."
Cloud titled his head to the side. Lacey seemed a bit disappointed? Perhaps she had been expecting a certain someone?
"Do you know where Spot is?"
He pursed his lips. Seemed like she was. He could only shrug though. He wasn't exactly sure where the Brooklyn leader was. "Not sure," he admitted. "Did hear him say somethin' about headin' near the border near Long Island."
He wasn't sure if that would be much help, but he offered it anyway.

"Not sure."
She deflated a bit, fingers wrapping a bit tighter around the coins in her pocket. Perhaps it would have to be another day.
"Did hear him say somethin' about headin' near the border near Long Island."
Lacey frowned a bit, but slowly nodded. Of course, he was the leader, and he had to work with the borders and everything now because of how many new newsies there were, but why was he there this late?
"Thanks," She nodded, beginning to leave before hesitating, "Did ya need somethin' from him, too?"

"Thanks."
He nodded. It really wasn't anything to thank him for after all. Spot might not even be there anymore.. but then again, the leader was pretty determined about redrawing the lines for the boroughs. It had bee his main priority these days. Spot had been staying up late, locked up in the lodge's library working on the map and discussing ideas with Mr. O'Quinn.
"Did ya need somethin' from him too?"
Cloud shook his head, smiling a little. "No, I'm just headin' to Manhattan to play cards." He pursed his lips. "But ummm." He hesitated. "If you um, do see Spot, please let him know I might be stayin' in 'Hattan tonight."

"No, I'm just headin' to Manhattan to play cards."
Lacey nodded a bit. That wasn't incredibly uncommon, though it didn't usually happen much with winter approaching.
"But ummm, if you um, do see Spot, please let him know I might be stayin' in 'Hattan tonight."
She nodded again. She could do that. "Stay safe, Cloud." She shot him another small smile, beginning to head off towards the Long Island border.

"Stay safe, Cloud."
Cloud smiled back. "You too."
If something happened to Lacey... well, Cloud knew that could be dangerous for Brooklyn. Spot would be upset, and the borough would be thrown into chaos. He just hoped and prayed that Lacey would stay safe. The weather wasn't looking to be kind this year.
He gave her a wave of goodbye before he too headed off but towards Manhattan.

"You too."
Of course, Lacey always did her best, but there were strange times in the borough since they had found that warehouse with the strange people in it that she would feel almost as though she was being watched. She couldn't quite describe what it was like, but it wasn't pleasant, and with the nipping cold of the weather and the strong winds, Lacey didn't really want to make the walk to the border, but she did anyway. She owed Spot at least that much.
It was freezing. The darker that it got, the more the wind seemed to pick up, and the more the temperature seemed to drop. She was gripping onto the coins in her pocket so hard that was afraid that she was going to break them, but she had finally made it up to the point where she could see the border, skin pale, cheeks flushed, and body trembling from the cold.

Spot was standing almost directly on the border, a faint line that had been once painted by the boys to show the borders clearly. He had a few papers in hand and was frowning down at them. A charcoal pencil sat on his left ear as he looked through the papers. He didn't seem bothered by the cold despite probably have been standing there for quite some time. He had a decently thick coat, but still... he probably should head back somewhere to get warm.
But just give more minutes... he almost had a good layout for the borders on this side of Brooklyn that should be fair for Long Island. He'd leave the other section for Long Island and Queens to quarrel about.

Almost instantly upon seeing Spot, all of the cold seemed to have been worth the long trip. A grin spread across her lips and she practically bounded over to him, arms wrapping around his body and burying her face into his shoulder.
"You're really here... I was scared you'd've left." She mumbled, voice a bit muffled by Spot's thicker coat.

"You're really here... I was scared you'd've left."
Spot almost socked poor Lacey square in the face in his surprise. After all, he was a bit too close to Long Island's side of selling... Long Island wasn't as tough as Queens to Spot's knowledge, but it was one of the more isolated boroughs. Not much was known about the Long Island newsies except that they were as tough as Brooklyn and quite territorial. Though Spot and Jack (and the other leaders) have yet to meet the actual leader of the borough. But anyways, Spot had been lucky enough to stop mid-punch and not so subtly bring it back down to his side.
He cleared his throat in embarrassment. "Umm... somethin' wrong?"

"Umm... somethin' wrong?"
She bit her lip. If she was being honest, Lacey had barely noticed the fact that Spot's fist had been maybe an inch away from her face for a brief moment, having been too filled with relief at the fact that she had finally found him.
"I wanted ta buy ya somethin'. For your birthday," She cleared her throat a bit, taking a step back from Spot and brushing herself off a bit, "I just didn't know what ta get ya, so I was gonna buy ya some hot chocolate, or somethin'..." She looked down.

"I wanted ta buy ya somethin'."
Spot had to say even though her response was unexpected, it was definitely a relief to hear. He had enough trouble on his hands with the borders... and well, he didn't want to think about the fact that he had almost attacked his girlfriend.
"For your birthday."
He blinked. "My birthday?" He glanced down at the old newspaper he had been scribbling on. The date was October... so it seemed his birthday has indeed come and gone. It had slipped his mind completely.
"I just didn't know what ta get ya, so I was gonna buy ya some hot chocolate, or somethin'...""
Spot didn't know what so say... he was touched that she had even remembered his birthday. It wasn't something he really had told anyone. "It's fine," he assured. "You don't have ta get me anythin'." His brows furrowed slightly as he noticed how cold she looked. "How long have you been out here? You're freezin'! We should head inside."

"My birthday?"
Of course, it was late. That was why Lacey felt so terrible about it to begin with, knowing that she had missed it. There had been a moment where she had panicked about being a bad girlfriend, but she had quickly sat herself down and refused to let herself overreact. She could make it up to him somehow.
"It's fine. You don't have ta get me anythin'."
She shook her head a bit. "I want to, Spot. I missed your birthday. You always do somethin' nice for me and I missed the chance ta do somethin' nice for you."
"How long have you been out here? You're freezin'! We should head inside."
Lacey huffed a bit, "I'm fine, Spot. Promise."

"I want to, Spot. I missed your birthday."
Spot pursed his lips. "It's just a birthday... I mean, I didn't even remember."
"You always do somethin' nice for me and I missed the chance ta do somethin' nice for you."
He sighed. She had her heart set on this. There was not arguing with her. He had finally started to understand that about Lacey.
"I'm fine, Spot. Promise."
He raised an eyebrow. "You might be, but your hands are saying otherwise." He motioned to her slightly shaky hands that seemed to be paling a bit in the cold. "We'll go inside foist... then talk about this birthday business. Sound fair?"

"It's just a birthday... I mean, I didn't even remember."
She shook her head firmly, a soft pout set on her lips. "Then I should be sayin' the same thing about Christmas and Valentine's and my birthday."
"You might be, but your hands are saying otherwise."
Lacey bit her lip, slowly sliding her hands into the sleeves of the relatively thin jacket that she was wearing.
"We'll go inside foist... then talk about this birthday business. Sound fair?"
She nodded, hand shooting back out to take his. She was definitely in a more affectionate mood as of late, and she wasn't entirely sure why, but perhaps it was because she had put herself out there in practically every way that she could. "Sounds fair."

"Then I should be sayin' the same thing about Christmas and Valentine's and my birthday."
Spot sighed in defeat. There was just no arguing over things like this with her.
"Sounds fair."
He nodded, glad she was at least agreeing with him on this particular subject. It was a bit of a long walk to the nearest building that wouldn't mind two newsies popping in to get warm. It was one of the small general stores that often helped the boys or girls out during hard times. They couldn't provide much help, but the store owners did what they could, like allowing the newsies to come in and warm themselves on cold selling days.

Lacey remained close to Spot as they walked, every now and then glancing over at him. It had been easy to see how stressed he was since he had started trying to redraw the borough lines, but she didn't know how she could help. She didn't want to risk stressing him out more.
Once they were inside, she turned to face Spot once again, chewing gently on her bottom lip. "So can I get ya somethin'?"

"So can I get ya somethin'?"
Spot could only sigh as he nudged Lacey closer to one of the small stoves in the store. Here they could thaw themselves a bit. He gave her a small smile. "If that's what you got yourself set on."
He carefully folded his papers and tucked them safely away in his pockets. "Jus' somethin' small will be fine." He was a simple sort of person. He only treated himself special occasions.

"If that's what you got yourself set on."
Lacey smiled a bit. She really did just want to make sure that she was being a good girlfriend, and that it was never something that Spot regretted. She didn't know how to make sure of that, though.
"Jus' somethin' small will be fine."
She nodded slowly. Something small, and more than likely something warm with the weather coming up. "Could I buy ya somethin' then? Like food or a drink or somethin'?"

"Could I buy ya somethin' then? Like food or a drink or somethin'?"
Spot pursed his lips and shrugged. That sounded good. It wouldn't be too costly and be rather simple. "Yeah, that should be fine."
He gave her a small smile to reassure her. He didn't want to seem ungrateful or anything. Spot just wasn't really used to be spoiled like this? Well, if anything, it helped keep his mind off the borders for the moment. But little did he and Lacey know, Long Island and some others were watching them.

"Yeah, that should be fine."
She beamed a bit in relief. Lacey had never been good at coming up with ideas for presents, but she always did her best with what she had. She just wished that she could give Spot more than the little that she could afford. "Perfect."

"Perfect."
To be honest, just seeing Lacey happy was enough for him. But well, this made her happy so he'd let her do it, just this once...
Spot warmed his hands a little more. "Well, I think I'm about warmed up... you?"
((I will brb! I have to go eat but I shouldn't be gone too long. X3))

"Well, I think I'm about warmed up... you?"
Lacey nodded quickly. She was just eager to get something nice for Spot just to make up for all of the incredibly kind and sweet things that he had done for her. He deserved at least something like this. "Absolutely."
[Alright, have fun!]
