Lacey sighed. The docks hadn't been so quiet in a long time, although she assumed that it had something to do with the fact that everyone else was inside doing something for dinner. Lacey, however, didn't feel much in the mood for food.
Brooklyn was her favorite place in the world, although the female had been distancing herself from a lot of people lately, and she wasn't entirely sure why. She was quite shy to begin with, although she had many friends that she probably could have stayed around. However, as the winter months had closed in, Lacey's personality had seemed to close up, as if it was shielding her from the cold. Perhaps it was the fact that her friendship with the Brooklyn leader had dissipated quite a bit over time, although she couldn't be sure about that. A part of her did miss, however, the leader's attitude at times.
Letting out another breath and watching it dissipate in front of her, Lacey sighed, dangling her legs over the dock and closing her eyes for a few moments, imagining the blue skies and warmth that came with the summertime.

Winter was always so silent... so quiet. It was a little weird for Brooklyn to be still for once, not that Spot really minded. He liked the stillness. It was like the peace before the storm. Of course, he always had to think ahead. Once spring came, things would be busy and who knows when Rip would come attack?
But here by the docks, he could stop and pretend that time was stopped. That everything was as quite and still as the snow surrounding him. He could just be himself and not worry about a single soul. The boys were at the lodge staying warm and trying to stay out of trouble, and for once, Spot was letting Mr. O'Quinn handle them.
Right now, Spot was just plain old Spot, enjoying his view of the docks without a care. He wasn't dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. He was just there.

Breaking the silence hadn't been something that Lacey had expected, especially when it seemed to come from someone already having been at the docks. It snapped her out of her trance quite quickly, and she shot whoever had interrupted her time alone a slightly frustrated look. However, upon seeing who it was, the harsh gaze instantly softened.
There had been a lot that Lacey had never gotten the chance to sort out with Spot, one of which being exactly how she felt when she was around him. She respected him and trusted him greatly, but she didn't entirely know how to describe all of the feelings that she got when he was around. She had never wanted to.
"Spot?" She whispered, not even sure if he would hear her.

"Spot?"
It was a soft voice that pulled him away from his thoughts. If it weren't for the fact that it was already silent around him, he wouldn't have heard his name. He looked around, slightly surprised that he wasn't alone. He raised his eyebrow slightly when he spotted Lacey.
Spot carefully climbed down from his perch and approached her slowly. "Lacey?"
He was rather surprised to see her here. It was rather cold out... and snowing.

"Lacey?"
"I, um... Didn't think that there was anyone else out here." She stated slowly, clearing her throat. She had figured that the bad weather had meant that everyone else would want to stay inside, although she had simply put on the best sweater that she had and made her way out anyway. She needed the time.
She briefly gestured for him to sit down beside her, although she didn't know if he would listen. When it came to the docks, Spot had the tendency to be rather particular about the places where he was, most likely for lookout reasons. She couldn't blame him, although she would enjoy his company either way. She had learned to after such a long time.

"I, um... Didn't think that there was anyone else out here."
Spot pursed his lips and nodded. "Yeah... I was kinda thinkin' the same."
Winter was the worst time of the year for most newsies. Papers didn't sell well and such, so most took what chances they had to stay indoors.
He cocked his head slightly to the side as Lacey motioned for him to sit beside her. He hesitated a moment before accepting her invitation. He wondered if there was something she wanted to talk about, perhaps? Who knew... He didn't feel like asking. She'd tell him if she needed to. Right now, he just felt like enjoying the silence.

"Yeah... I was kinda thinkin' the same."
She wasn't surprised. The pair had probably had similar motives going down there in the first place. Perhaps Lacey had spent too much time with Spot?
The feeling of him sitting beside her seemed to momentarily warm her up a bit, although she pulled the coat a bit tighter around her thin frame, sighing softly. "Brooklyn's been going well, I take it? Nothing terrible happening?" Of course, they were two completely different questions when it came down to things like Rip, but she didn't want to bring that up. It would ruin the moment.
She had missed having moments with Spot. As much as she didn't want to admit it [at least, not yet], she had really missed spending time with the leader as she had before.

"Brooklyn's been going well, I take it? Nothing terrible happening?"
Spot glanced at her from the corner of his eye and gave her a slight nod. "It's been pretty quiet," he answered softly. "Boys are stayin' out of trouble and the gals seem ta be doin' the same."
He kept an eye on the girls, of course, but he tried to stay away from them as much as possible. He just made sure they stayed safe and that the boys didn't bother them. He had a leader relationship when it came to most of the girls in Brooklyn.
It was silent once again, but Spot didn't mind. It was nice to have things so peaceful for his mostly hectic life. He wondered if his brothers were enjoying the weather.

"It's been pretty quiet."
Lacey nodded. The quiet had been nice.
"Boys are stayin' out of trouble and the gals seem ta be doin' the same."
She nodded again. "The goils have been fine. A lotta talk 'bout boys stopped, though. 'S a little strange." She shrugged, allowing the pair to fall back into silence once again.
The thing about Spot was that silence was never a bad thing. Typically, it was more comfortable than talking, and Lacey had learned to appreciate it. In all actuality, it was comforting, like the peace before a storm.

"The goils have been fine. A lotta talk 'bout the boys stopped, though. 'S a little strange though."
Spot raised an eyebrow. "That's... good right?" If the boys caused any trouble... "Let me know if the boys are ever causin' the gals trouble."
He had to admit... moments with Lacey were nice. She was a great bird and just nice overall. She wasn't like any of the other girls in Brooklyn. She didn't seem to want to get close for his power or to be his girlfriend. It felt like she just wanted to know him as a person for who he was, and he liked that. There weren't very many people like that in Brooklyn. He'd probably say Lacey and Cloud were the only two newsies in Brooklyn that he felt comfortable with.

"That's... good right?"
Lacey shrugged. It depended on how someone looked at it, but when she was trying to get some sleep, yes. It was definitely good.
"Let me know if the boys are ever causin' the gals trouble."
"I don't think it's that... I think it's more that it's winter, an' the goils aren't focusin' on flirtin' and stuff like that." If there was ever any trouble, the first person that she went to was Spot. No questions asked. She didn't care if people saw her as a snitch, just because that's what she was when it was necessary. She had a borough to help Spot keep safe, and she was loyal to it without question.
Lacey only cast a brief glance at Spot out of the corner of her eyes, although she was able to see quite clearly that he had relaxed quite a bit. That was a good sign, as far as she was aware, although she could never be sure. "But I'll tell ya if somethin' happens."

Spot nodded as she shrugged. Well, it must be fine if Lacey wasn't really saying anything.
"I don't think it's that... I think it's more that it's winter, an' the goils aren't focusin' on flirtin' and stuff like that."
He nodded slowly. That made sense. He just never really thought about it that way before.
"But I'll tell ya if somethin' happens."
He cracked a small smile. "Thanks... I really appreciate it." He leaned back some to look at the snowflakes falling. "It's nice out," he commented as he caught a snowflake in his palm. "The snow... it's nice."

"Thanks... I really appreciate it."
Lacey nodded. If it was good for the borough, then she would do it, even if it was the unpopular decision. "O'course."
"It's nice out,"
Lacey shot Spot a questioning look. "It's snowing?"
"The snow... it's nice."
Watching Spot being so gentle with the snowflakes and such brought a small smile to her face, and she laughed faintly, shaking some of the snow from her hair. "Ya like the snow?" Lacey personally didn't mind it, and she found it beautiful, but she had quite a low tolerance when it came to the cold. The winter months included a lot less pretending for her when it came to feigning sick to sell more papes.
Spot, however, had never seemed like the type to her that would enjoy the snow. Perhaps it was the face that he put on for everyone else, but in that case, she was flattered that he was willing to let that down around her. "It's beautiful, ain't it?" The grin on her lips grew.

"O'course."
Spot smiled softly. It was good to know he had girl he knew that he could trust.
"Its snowing?"
He nodded, smiling once more as a snowflake landed on his palm again. "Yeah it sure is."
"Ya like the snow?"
He nodded as he inspected the snowflake in his hand. So small and delicate, but so beautiful. "Yeah... I like snow." He had a somewhat bittersweet look on his face. "I know most people hate it since it brings such bad times... but some of my best memories happened in winter," he admitted.
"It's beautiful, ain't it?"
He nodded again. "Yeah... it really is. Makes it nice and quiet too."

"Yeah it sure is."
Lacey quirked a smile.
"Yeah... I like snow."
She couldn't blame him, although it was still a bit of a surprise, albeit a pleasant one. She was glad that he could enjoy the winter months when so many other newsies were absolutely miserable the whole time.
"I know most people hate it since it brings such bad times... but some of my best memories happened in winter,"
Lacey didn't bother asking, for once in her life not wanting to pry, simply choosing to smile and nod. "I'm glad. If ya can appreciate somethin' and find somethin' beautiful to stick around like that all the time, things are gonna be real nice for ya, Spot."
"Yeah... it really is. Makes it nice and quiet too."
That was more like the Spot that she knew; always a lover of silence. She nodded, turning her gaze from him back out to the water as she snow fell. It wasn't too heavy, and it was just enough to make the sight of the bridge and the rest of New York City look beautiful, covered in a thin layer of white. "'M glad ya like it. It's real pretty out here."

He gave her a surprised but grateful look. He didn't think Lacey would pry into his life, but it was nice to know she really wouldn't.
"Thanks..."
"'M glad you like it. It's real prettt out here."
He nodded again. "It really is..."
It was beautiful in so many ways. The silencer for one. And just the beauty of nature. It was definitely one the best times of the year. He sighed softly. And it would end all too soon. Things would go back to normal so he had to enjoy the moments he had in these still moments.
He glanced over at Lacey. "Do you like snow?" he asked curiously.

"Thanks..."
Lacey nodded, a faint smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she pulled her jacket tighter once again.
"It really is..."
She was glad that Spot agreed. Beauty was, of course, in the eye of the beholder, but it was still nice to know that Spot was willing to agree with her about it.
"Do you like snow?"
Lacey was a bit taken aback by his question, looking back over at him and making direct eye contact with a pair of piercing blue eyes. She sighed, shrugging a bit. "I can 'ppreciate it. I dunno if I'd say I loved it or anythin' like that, but I like it, yeah. I get cold easy, though." She shrugged.
Snow was beautiful, and she loved watching it fall, especially when it would fall into her hair of her eyelashes and act like a crown of sorts. She felt as though it was really pretty, and often times, that was the only reason why she could handle the snow. However now, she was perfectly willing to sit there just to have a good conversation with someone. She had been missing that lately.

"I can 'ppreciate it. I dunno if I'd say I loved it or anythin' like that, but I like it, yeah. I get cold easy, though."
Spot nodded in understanding. Not everyone was a big fan of snow. He could see why. It was beautiful, but very dangerous.
"You're not too cold now are you?" Spot asked, concerned. He knew how dangerous it could be to be out in the cold for long periods of time.
He and Thunder had almost lost Jasper to winter once... he didn't want to lose anyone that way. That was probably the reason he was a bit tougher on his boys and girls during the winter. He didn't want to lose a newsie on his watch. Not ever.

"You're not too cold now are you?"
Lacey shook her head, laughing ever so slightly. She could handle some sniffles, which is probably what she already had, but she wasn't going to bother much unless her body started going numb. The jacket that she had might not have been perfect, but it was fuzzy and warm, and she had knitted a scarf for herself a while back, so she felt fine. Cold, and a bit shaky, but nothing was numb yet. If it was, she would head back.
"I'm fine. Being a little sick helps with sellin', which gets me in earlier anyway. But I ain't close ta gettin' myself real sick, I promise. Are you?" She asked. The boys' coats tended to not fit after a while, so they were constantly getting new ones as they got older. She didn't know whether or not Spot's was new enough to keep him warm or not.
"If you're cold at all, ya can borrow the scarf. I'd need it back later, but if ya need it, that means more." She flashed him a small smile, although there was a glimmer of concern in her hazel eyes.

"I'm fine. Being a little sick helps with sellin', which gets me in earlier anyway. But I ain't close ta gettin' myself real sick, I promise. Are you?"
Spot pursed his lips slightly. He knew most newsies faked being sick or actually used their sickness to sell more papes. Even he had done it a few times. He just didn't want anyone to take it too far.
"Ya sure? Don't want you ta get sick real bad for real." He tugged on his coat some. "And m'fine. Thunder's old jacket is warm enough."
"If you're cold at all, ya can borrow the scarf. I'd need it back later, but if ya need it, that means more."
There was a faint blush on his cheeks. "Um I'm fine really... but that's a real nice scarf." He had to admit he had been admiring the knitting pattern of the scarf. It reminded him of the times his mother used to knit.

"Ya sure? Don't want you ta get sick real bad for real."
Lacey smiled, "Nah, I'd stop before that happened. I don't wanna get sick real bad for real, either."
"And m'fine. Thunder's old jacket is warm enough."
She nodded and shrugged. If Spot thought that the jacket was okay, and he was worried about her actually getting sick, she assumed that he wouldn't be wanting to really get sick, either. She didn't push it. She wasn't in the mood to get into any sort of argument today; not when everything else around them seemed to quiet and peaceful.
"Um I'm fine really... but that's a real nice scarf."
Lacey blushed at his compliment. "Thanks. I made it a few years ago when it was real cold. I saved up for a real long time for the yarn an' needles an' stuff." She sniffled slightly, grinning ever so softly. "I could make ya one, if ya want. There's stuff left over from it, and I don't have much else ta do 'round here lately, with all the snow an' stuff."

"Nah, I'd stop before that happened. I don't wanna get sick real bad for real, either."
Spot nodded, relieved. He didn't think Lacey was the reckless type, but it didn't hurt to check. He really disliked it when his newsies were stupid and reckless.
"Thanks. I made it a few years ago when it was real cold. I saved up for a real long time for the yarn an' needles an' stuff."
He nodded. "You did a great job. It looks great and real warm."
"I could make ya one, if ya want. There's stuff left over from it, and I don't have much else ta do 'round here lately, with all the snow an' stuff."
Spot coughed, trying to cover his blush. "I'd... I'd like that."
It would be nice to have a scarf again. He had given his to Jasper since it had been getting a little short for him.

"You did a great job. It looks great and real warm."
Lacey grinned. She was glad that Spot liked what she was doing, and she was flattered that he thought so highly of the scarf that she had made. It had taken a lot of time and money for her, and she was proud of it. She was glad that Spot was too.
"I'd... I'd like that."
Lacey did her best to fight back her own blush, laughing and nodding a bit. "I'll do my best. It may not be as good since I'm out of practice but it'll be alright for the most part and warm." She flashed him a shy smile.
If she could make Spot smile, that would be a great accomplishment in and of itself.

Spot smiled. "I'm sure it'll look great. As long as it's warm, I can't complain."
Somehow, even though it wasn't totally silent anymore, he was really enjoying this day. It wasn't very often that he could feel like himself and just talk to someone and feel happy. He couldn't remember the last time he could say he felt comfortable talking with a girl that wasn't his cousin. Lacey was a nice girl and seemed very understanding despite their somewhat rough start. He trusted her a whole lot.

[Ooh, fun! Good luck with that, and take your time! cx]
"I'm sure it'll look great. As long as it's warm, I can't complain."
Lacey was glad that Spot seemed so confident in her abilities. It didn't happen all that much, having someone so confident in her, and the fact that he had even trusted her to become a bird made it even better. She did feel close to Spot, in a way, and she was rather happy about that.
"Sounds good ta me, I'll make it real warm for ya." She shrugged nonchalantly, a faint smile tugging at her lips as she tore her gaze from the boy beside her and looked back out at the skyline. It was a beautiful city, undoubtedly, and she was glad that she lived there, no matter how poor and miserable she could be at times. She couldn't imagine living anywhere but in the lodging house in Brooklyn. "What's your favorite color, Spot?"
