"It's fine."
Ace pursed his lips slightly. He wasn't totally convinced that it was fine, but he knew better than to press it. He would only make things worse.
"Now that chocolate cake. Do you want more tea? It'll help with the chocolate."
He nodded. "More tea would be great."

More tea would be great.
Astrid forced a smile easily. "Alright." She motioned over their waitress and ordered the tea as well as their chocolate cake. "There we go. It'll be here in no time."

"Makes it hard ta work here sometimes."
Ace nodded some. He might not be a waiter, but he understood that being quick to catch up what customers wanted can be rather difficult.
"E haunting but sometimes the money's worth it..."
He nodded again. "Yeha that's the way some jobs are I suppose."

Astrid nodded. "That's why people don't leave." She let out a soft laugh.

"That's why people don't leave."
Ace shrugged lightly. He just wished his father hadn't of left his old job. Sure, the West was promising, but had it really been worth leaving New York and New Jersey?

Astrid watched him for a bit. He seem troubled. "Ya alright...?" She asked softly.

Ace blinked in surprise. "Hmmm? Oh yeah... I'm fine." He smiled sheepishly. "I was jus' thinkin' that's all."

"Sometimes it's not a good thing...ya look bothered..."
Ace shook his head. "It's nothin' really... I was jus' thinkin' about my dad," he said quietly then shrugged. "Like I said, it's nothing, an' it looks like our dessert is here." He smiled and thanked the waitress.
The cake certainly looked delicious and was bound to go very well with the tea.

Astrid shook her head. "When I think of my dad it's not nothin. I want people ta believe it but it's not..." She looked up And smiled at their waitress and looked over at Ace. "But...since it's the past..."

"When I think of my dad it's not nothin. I want people ta believe it but it's not..."
Ace took a sip of his tea. He knew that the thoughts he had were not "nothing" to him, but he didn't want the past to hold him back. Besides, Astrid didn't need to hear about how his father passed away.
"But...since it's the past..."
He gave her a small smile. "I miss my dad, but I know he's not comin' back. I can't move forward if I'm always looking back at the past."

Astrid nodded a bit and watched him smile. It was a kinda nice smile. Hearing his words she nodded a bit. "Yeah...Sometimes ya can't help but have it stop ya..." Astrid always tried to move forward but some times like today it came back to haunt her.

"Yeah...Sometimes ya can't help but have it stop ya..."
Ace shrugged lightly as he took a bite of the chocolate cake. "Very true... but that's when you need to be strong and press on."
It was always easier said than done, but Ace had learned it had been worth the pain to press on. The past had kept him from being the person he needed to be, the brother Lottie needed.

Very true... but that's when you need to be strong and press on.
Astrid took a bite and let what Ace said sink in. "Is it easier having someone like Lottie with you...? Does having people help pull you out of it?" She asked softly sipping on her tea a bit.

"Is it easier having someone like Lottie with you...? Does having people help pull you out of it?"
Ace chewed the cake thoughtfully. "You can say that... but it ain't necessarily true." He stirred his tea some as he swallowed. "Lottie isn't always wit' me after all. Sometimes, I'm alone when I feel that way. I'm not saying Lottie don't help me at all. Just thinkin' about her helps sometimes, but when it all comes down to it, it's up to me ta be strong and pull myself out of the past. Havin' people there for you definitely makes it a littler easier, but you gotta be the strong one. They can't do it for you even by bein' there. They don't understand what you are goin' through."

Astrid nodded a bit. "No one really understands do they...?" She took another bite and relaxed in her seat some.

"No one really understands do they...?"
Ace shrugged as he finished off his tea and cake. "Possibly... but I think that there are a few people out there who have gone through almost the same things as others." He glanced down at his books. "After all," he said softly. "Don't we see that in books? That's based on real life... somewhere someone else understand and can commiserate with me or you."

Astrid nodded a bit. "That's what people say..."she stared through the table. "No one would commiserate with me I don't think..." She said softly.

"That's what people say... No one would commiserate with me I don't think..."
Ace pursed his lips, shrugging some as he set his fork aside. "You may never find the person who's gone through something like you..." He sighed softly and glanced out a nearby window. "But that might be because some of don't tell others what we're going through. We keep it inside an' that only hurts us. If we told others... well , we could help each other because we would understand what the other is goin' through."
He shifted in his seat some. "It was a nice lunch... The dessert was good to. I really enjoyed it." He gave her a small smile as he picked up his books. "I hope we can see each other again."

Everything he said had made sense. She wasn't sharing what she was going through and it was hurting her more then she'd like to think. Maybe Astrid just needed to talk. Ace seemed like the only person who might understand. She just needed to talk. "I..." Astrid started but she didn't get to finish. Ace started shifting in his seat and was moving to get up.
It was a nice lunch... The dessert was good to. I really enjoyed it. I hope we can see each other again.
Astrid watched him pick up is books. She slowly moved to stand. "It was nice...thanks..." Astrid didn't look up at him but instead focused on straightening her dress. "That'd be nice." Astrid said softly. "I'll be looking forward to it." She had a feeling though that it wouldn't happen. He was being polite like everyone else. She most likely wouldn't see him again. That's the way things worked. Astrid would be alone. That's apparently the way fate wanted it. She didn't know why she bothered sometimes. Astrid laid down the money for the cake and their second cups of tea along with a decent tip. "It was nice seein ya again..." Astrid mumbled a bit..

"I..."
Ace cocked his head slightly. It seemed as if she was going to say something... but she stopped. He wondered why.
"It was nice...thanks..."
He smiled. "You're welcome. Glad we were both able ta have a nice time."
"That'd be nice. I'll be looking forward to it."
Smiling again, he nodded. "If you ever see me when I'm in Queens, jus' wave me over an' maybe we can do lunch or something again."
"It was nice seein ya again..."
He added a tip beside hers and pursed his lips some. "It was nice seein' you again too," he replied softly.
He had gotten to know her a little better, and maybe he would be able to understand her better in the future. They had a sort of rocky start. It could change, though. They both seemed to be hurting people. It could turn into a great friendship, but then again maybe not. Who knew?

You're welcome. Glad we were both able ta have a nice time.
Astrid nodded a bit still not quiet looking up at him when she spoke. "Yeah it was nice..." Part of her was upset with herself for stoping herself from what she was saying. He didn't look like he wanted to stay much longer aAnd she would take up to much of his time.
If you ever see me when I'm in Queens, jus' wave me over an' maybe we can do lunch or something again.
She nodded finally looking up at him. "Yeah...I will. Same goes for you too."
It was nice seein' you again too,
Astrid looked at him as he pursed his lips. Has she done something wrong? She looked down quickly. It wasn't like she would see him much anyway. She shouldn't worry about things that wouldn't matter much after lunch. Astrid moved to possibly shake hands but his arms were full of books so she adjusted quickly and his her intentions. "I...I guess this is goodbye." She whispered looking up at him with a weak half smile. Part of her wanted to scream and not let him leave yet. Astrid felt like she might explode and she didn't want to be alone. The other part knew better and was keeping her calm till she was in the lodge. Then she could let her feelings out. Now wasn't the time or place.

"Yeah it was nice..."
Ace nodded again as he adjusted his books under his arm. It had been a very nice lunch despite his few mishaps. Perhaps their next meeting would go much smoother.
"Yeah... I will. Same goes for you too."
He grinned. "Will do!"
"I...I guess this is goodbye."
He bit his lip some and had a somewhat far away look in his eye. "Naw... I don't do goodbyes." He gave her a small smile. "Goodbyes usually mean I won't see someone again, and I hate that." He adjusted his books once more and held out his hand for her to shake. "I prefer 'see ya later' 'cause that'll mean I'll be seein' you again."
