"I appreciate it. Spot can be a handful at times, but he's got a good heart."
Lacey laughed. She figured that she knew how true that was firsthand now. Spot had wanted to keep his family out of it, but he really did care about them, and that was all that she was focused on now. "Believe me, I know. Thanks."
"Comes with bein' a leader."
Of course, it was the truth. But that didn't mean that Lacey was at all relaxed about it. She shook her head, sighing softly. "I know. I believe that, and you're brave for dealin' with it so well... But your borough is here for ya. I'm here for ya." She whispered once again, not willing to just shrug all of this off in the way that Spot was doing it.

"I know. I believe that, and you're brave for dealin' with it so well... But your borough is here for ya. I'm here for ya."
Spot pursed his lips, shoving his hands into his pockets and looking up at the sky. He wasn't sure where to look or what to say. Today certainly had taken a different turn than he had thought it would.
"Thanks..." he answered softly and glanced over at her. "I guess... um that means you'll still be a boid?"

"Thanks..."
She smiled a bit, shrugging slightly and looking down once again before glancing back over at him. "It's no problem. Anytime." She beamed a bit, blushing ever so slightly.
"I guess... um that means you'll still be a boid?"
A crooked smile tugged at Lacey's lips, and she shrugged, "If ya still want me ta be. If ya don't, I don't blame ya. I didn't know it had somethin' ta do with your family. I thought somethin' was on your mind about Rip... In which case, it really would've been better for ya ta talk about it." She pointed out. "It was my fault. My mistake. I'll make it up ta ya somehow." She smiled a bit. "I would love ta be a boid if ya still are willin' ta have me, though." She smiled shyly at him.

"It's no problem. Anytime."
He nodded a little bit, relishing the quietness even if it was a little awkward.
"If ya still want me ta be. If ya don't, I don't blame ya."
Spot wanted to point out that she was the one who wanted to quit, but he thought the better of it. "I want you ta stay," he said simply.
After all, she had proven to be quite a great boid. There weren't many like her, and he would hate to lose her.
"I didn't know it had somethin' ta do with your family."
He shrugged and kept his eyes on the road ahead. Family was still a little bit of a touchy subject even if Lacey did know a little more about them than most.
"I thought somethin' was on your mind about Rip... In which case, it really would've been better for ya ta talk about it."
He shrugged again. He couldn't blame her. Rip had been the main concern the past few days that she would have known about.
"It was my fault. My mistake. I'll make it up ta ya somehow. I would love ta be a boid if ya still are willin' ta have me, though."
Spot glanced at her and nodded. "I would like for you ta stay as a boid... jus' um..." He scratched the back of his neck. "Keep quiet about Thunder an' Jasper. I don't really want Brooklyn knowin' about them."

"I want you ta stay,"
Lacey's heart fluttered. The words didn't mean much to Spot, most likely, but they meant something to her. It made her feel as though she was really a part of something back in Brooklyn... And that her leaving would matter.
No matter how it was meant to sound, it made Lacey happy, a grin forming on her features.
"I would like for you ta stay as a boid... jus' um..."
Lacey swallowed thickly. So there was a condition. That was never a good sign, from what she had seen in the past.
"Keep quiet about Thunder an' Jasper. I don't really want Brooklyn knowin' about them."
Lacey breathed out a small sigh of relief, nodding a bit. "Yeah... Yeah, that's no problem. Done." She smiled a bit.
"Oh, and Spot?" She swallowed thickly, slowly looking over at him. "I meant what I said... About ya bein' special." She smiled faintly.

"Yeah... Yeah, that's no problem. Done."
Spot visibly relaxed, almost as if he had been holding in his breath. He knew Lacey could be trusted, but now he knew for sure.
"Oh, and Spot?"
He looked over at her curiously as they stepped into Manhattan."
"I mean what I said... About ya bein' special."
Spot's ears were red. He could feel them burning. He actually hadn't heard her say that he was special before... so hearing it now was a little awkward.
"Uh um," he coughed. "I um really... ain't that special. Jus' um..."
Yeah, he had no clue what to say.

Seeing how much Spot relaxed when she agreed not to mention anything about his brothers to Brooklyn brought another small smile to her face, laughing slightly. "It's worth keepin' a secret from everyone just ta see ya relax." She added.
"I um really... ain't that special. Jus' um..."
Lacey smiled faintly, once again glancing around at Manhattan. The territory there was quite a bit more familiar to her, with her recognizing some of the buildings, although she had only ever seen them from a distance before. She had never had to come this far over in Manhattan while she had been working as a bird.
"Either way, though... Thanks for the second chance. I'm just kinda excited ta get back and get some sleep... And you need it, too." She added quickly, referring to the bags under his eyes that had been there now for several days and still weren't showing any signs of truly fading away.

"It's worth keepin' a secret from everyone just ta see ya relax."
Spot cracked a small smile. "I appreciate it."
"Either way, though... Thanks for the second change."
He shrugged. It really wasn't a second chance. She had never lost the first chance. "Didn't want ta lose a good boid."
"I'm just kinda excited ta get back and get some sleep... And you need it, too."
He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Yeah... still got a few things ta do though before I can get ta sleep." He glanced over at her. "Um... you'll still go an' find Lookout an' tell 'im that he'll be in charge for a bit, right?"
If not... well he could do it himself.

"I appreciate it."
Lacey smiled a bit. That had to be the first time that she had heard Spot say something like that, and it was nice. It was a good sort of change.
"Didn't want ta lose a good boid."
She laughed slightly, shrugging, "Ya could've found another one if it wasn't me. There are plenty of good people in the borough that could do just as good a job as I've been doin' lately." She added quickly.
"Yeah... still got a few things ta do though before I can get ta sleep."
Lacey frowned. What was he going to be doing now? They had spoken to Staten, and Jack was meeting up with him in Manhattan the next day... Yeah, there were other boroughs, but was it really something that he had to do that night?
"Um... you'll still go an' find Lookout an' tell 'im that he'll be in charge for a bit, right?"
Lacey nodded slowly, sighing softly. "Just... Hurry back, alright? Don't get yourself hurt." She smiled weakly, continuing to walk before speaking again.
"Oh, and Spot?" She began, having blurted it out a bit more than anything without really thinking through whether or not it was a good idea to actually say. However, she backed out at the last second, shaking her head. "N-never mind..." She mumbled, sighing softly.

"Ya could've found another one if it wasn't me. There are plenty of good people in the borough that could do just as good a job as I've been doin' lately."
Spot was shrugging again. "Maybe, maybe not. Could have found anotha boid but not one as good as you," he answered honestly.
"Just... Hurry back, alright? Don't get yourself hurt."
He smirked slightly. "I ain't leavin' Brooklyn, my business is there."
"Oh, and Spot?"
He looked up and raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"
"N-never mind..."
Spot couldn't help but frown in frustration. What had she wanted to say? Was it important? Maybe not since she didn't want to say it... but then again maybe it was? Gah, girls were confusing!

"Maybe, maybe not. Could have found anotha boid but not one as good as you,"
Lacey's cheeks burned bright pink, although she did her best to laugh it off. Of course, his words were friendly, most definitely... But it was still more of a compliment than she had been expecting. "Th-thank you." She giggled slightly. Why am I giggling? I sound like a child.
"I ain't leavin' Brooklyn, my business is there."
Lacey relaxed a bit hearing that Spot wouldn't be leaving Brooklyn, glad that he was at least safe in the sense that people from his borough would be around if something was to happen to him. "Good... That's good. That makes things easier."
"Yeah?"
The frown that formed on Spot's features when she brushed the matter aside caused her to sigh shakily in defeat, shrugging a bit. "I dunno, I just... I've really started ta like bein' around ya." She shrugged a bit. "It's complicated, I guess, what I'm tryin' ta say... But whatever. Not really important..."

"Th-thank you."
Spot cracked a small smile. "You're welcome."
Her giggle was kind of cute. It wasn't annoying like the other girls' giggles. Now theirs could give you a headache! Lacey's was something he wouldn't mind hearing again.
"Good... That's good. That makes things easier."
He nodded as they headed toward the bridge."Yeah... been walking an awful lot."
"I dunno, I just... I've really started ta like bein' around ya."
Spot blinked. Well, he certainly hadn't expected to hear that. "Ah well... um"
"It's complicated, I guess, what I'm tryin' ta say... But whatever. Not really important..."
He nodded some. It really was complicated, but not overly complicated, thank goodness. "Well... um... it's been nice gettin' ta know you a little better..."

"You're welcome."
Lacey relaxed a bit at his words, mirroring his smile and shifting her gaze back to her feet, her hands linked behind her back as she continued walking with him, the bridge beginning to appear in the near distance.
"Yeah... been walking an awful lot."
Lacey laughed, nodding in agreement. "Yeah, definitely. Especially you, you've been walkin' around late at night when I haven't been. Ya never really slow down with your duties as a leader. That's great... In small amounts." She smiled a bit.
"Ah well... um."
Her gaze once again shot to the ground, her heart pounding so loudly in her chest that she was sure that he could hear it. Her hands were also trembling slightly as she continued walking.
"Well... um... it's been nice gettin' ta know you a little better..."
She laughed weakly, "Yeah... You too." That's not what I meant, but it's all I can say... For now, at least. As they reached the bridge, Lacey didn't hesitate before beginning to cross, thankful to be back in extremely familiar territory.

"Yeah, definitely. Especially you, you've been walkin' around late at night when I haven't been."
Spot scratched the back of his neck with his free hand. "Eh heh... yeah. Goin' ta Staten mostly."
"Ya never really slow down with your duties as a leader. That's great... In small amounts."
He cracked a small grin. "In small amounts, eh? I'll have ta work on that."
"Yeah... You too."
He nodded and glanced down before doing a double take at their hands. Somehow he had missed them holding hands once again...

"Eh heh... yeah. Goin' ta Staten mostly."
Lacey smiled a bit. Now she finally understood why Staten was such a big deal to him, and she couldn't blame him for going over there as much as he did. But what made his brothers live there and not in Brooklyn? "Well, if ya ever need any company... I ain't got much ta do besides sellin' papes. Unless ya have somethin' else that ya want me doin', I'm always around ta keep ya company." She smiled a bit.
"In small amounts, eh? I'll have ta work on that."
Lacey laughed lightly, rolling her eyes playfully at him. "Ya don't need to work on it. That's the problem ta begin with. You're workin' too hard." She giggled.
Only seeing Spot's glances down at their hands again caused her to realize that she had once again taken his hand, immediately yanking it back and looking away in a feeble attempt to hide the dark blush on her cheeks. "I-I'm sorry, I keep doing that, I don't even notice... It's a security thing, I guess. J-just tell me if I do it again, I'll stop, I promise..." She mumbled, her words jumbling together a bit as she became slightly flustered.

Spot shrugged lightly. "Thunder seemed ta like ya so... um next time I go maybe you can come along."
Thunder also probably wanted to get to know Lacey better so it would be better to let her come than have his brother pester him about her.
"Ya don't need to work on it. That's the problem ta begin with. You're workin' too hard."
He chuckled a bit. "Naw... I don't work enough," he joked.
"I-I'm sorry, I keep doing that, I don't even notice... It's a security thing, I guess. J-just tell me if I do it again, I'll stop, I promise..."
Spot was a bit confused and flustered himself. He wasn't sure if the whole hand holding thing was him or her or even both of them. "It's uh... okay. I mean I don't mind... but um I don't like doin' it, no I mean it's jus' I don't like people seein' me um holdin' hands."

"Thunder seemed ta like ya so... um next time I go maybe you can come along."
Lacey grinned at his words, although she did her best to look casual and not too happy about it. She didn't want to seem strange or anything.
"Naw... I don't work enough,"
Lacey scoffed, playfully nudging him. "Right," She stated sarcastically. "You're absolutely right."
"It's uh... okay. I mean I don't mind... but um I don't like doin' it, no I mean it's jus' I don't like people seein' me um holdin' hands."
Lacey laughed, although it was a bit sad sounding, running her fingers through her hair in an effort to loosen herself up a bit and ease the tension that had spread throughout her entire body by that point. "Yeah... I get it, no worries. Private or not at all. Noted." She smiled a bit.

"Right. You're absolutely right."
Spot grin mischievously. "Ain't I? Boys are always sayin' how I'm so lazy an' never get anythin' done."
"Yeah... I get it, no worries. Private or not at all. Noted."
Her laugh sounded kind of sad. He hoped he hadn't hurt her feelings or anything like that. "Sorry..." he murmured. "I jus', I jus' don't know what ta do around goils."

Lacey scoffed, "Well, they don't know that you're goin' ta Staten either. I'm not sayin' ya should tell 'em, I'm just sayin' ya shouldn't listen ta them." She quipped back.
"Sorry... I jus', I jus' don't know what ta do around goils."
Lacey smiled crookedly, "Me either. Around boys, though... I ain't good with stuff like that. I leave it ta the other goils." She sighed softly. "But really, it ain't a big deal." She flashed him a small smile.

Spot's smirk faded. That was one thing he could not and would not ever tell them. He didn't really like how she brought it up during their playful banter even if she did say that he didn't have to tell his boys."
"Me either. Around boys, though... I ain't good with stuff like that. I leave it ta the other goils."
He pursed his lips slightly. "Guess that's kinda what I do too... leave it ta my boys."
"But really, it ain't a big deal."
Spot shrugged. "If you say so."

Lacey smiled a bit, once again looking away as they reached the familiar territory of Brooklyn. "So, uh... I'll see ya tomorrow. Or sometime. I guess." She flashed him a quick smile, silently beginning to walk away, closing her eyes tightly and wincing a bit.
Great job. I've managed to mess things up all over again.

"So, uh... I'll see ya tomorrow. Or sometime. I guess."
Spot pursed his lips and nodded. "Uh yeah... tamorrow or sometime around."
He stopped at the edge of the bridge and watched her walk away. Today definitely had been an interesting day. It hadn't gone at all like he thought it would. It left him quite dazed and confused. He had a strange feeling... and for once in his life, he had no idea what to do with the strange feeling.

"Uh yeah... tamorrow or sometime around."
After a bit, just a few steps before she would have vanished behind some buildings, Lacey turned briefly and looked back at Spot. He stood in the same place at the end of the bridge, watching her as she walked away. She blushed, waving a bit at him before continuing and making her way back to the lodging house for the night.
The day had been complicated in so many ways, but Lacey wanted to do it all over again.

It really had been an interesting and rather eye-opening day.
